Use OBS’s Media Source to play a local MP4, then isolate where the crackling begins: in the file itself, OBS playback, or the stream viewers receive. There is no single confirmed fix for every setup. Start by checking OBS’s low-latency audio buffering option, which the OBS Project warns may make some sources glitch or stop playing.
Set up the MP4 as an OBS Media Source
- Open the OBS scene you want to use and select Sources > + > Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one, then browse to the local MP4. OBS lists MP4 as a supported video file format. OBS Media Sources
- Choose whether to loop the file and whether it should restart when the source becomes active. Leave hardware decoding off for the first test; it uses the GPU decoder when available, and is a setting to test later if needed.
- Start playback and check that the source appears in the Audio Mixer and that its level responds. In Advanced Audio Properties, verify that the source is assigned to the audio track used for streaming. If you want to hear the MP4 on your own device, configure audio monitoring deliberately and check the selected monitoring device.
These routing checks are practical troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee about defaults: settings can differ across OBS versions and configurations. If you need a playlist or VLC’s extended media support instead of a single local file, OBS also offers a separate VLC Video source. Diagnose the crackling in a useful order
Change one setting at a time and retest. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped instead of masking the cause.
1. Check low-latency audio buffering
In OBS’s audio settings, look for Low Latency Audio Buffering Mode. The OBS Project’s warning says: “Low latency audio buffering mode may cause audio to glitch or stop playing from some sources.” If it is enabled, disable it unless your setup specifically requires it, then test the MP4 again. It is a sensible first check—not a confirmed cause of every crackling problem. OBS Studio English locale

2. Review the audio sample rate and devices
Check OBS’s audio sampling rate and selected audio devices, then compare them with the relevant operating-system or hardware-device settings. The OBS overview guide describes these controls and recommends leaving defaults in place unless there is a reason to change them. A mismatch is one possibility to investigate, but crackling alone does not prove one exists. OBS Studio Overview Guide
3. Find out whether the problem follows the file
- Play the MP4 in an ordinary media player. If it crackles there too, the issue is not confined to OBS playback.
- Try a second known-good local video in the same OBS scene. If only one file crackles, inspect that file’s actual audio codec and encoding.
- Do not rely on the
.mp4extension to identify the audio: MP4 is a container that can hold different audio codecs. The extension by itself does not reveal what is inside the file. OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide
4. Separate source crackling from stream delivery problems
Check the OBS dropped-frame counter and connection indicator. The OBS Help Portal says that rising dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection state point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. That indicator can help diagnose connection or bitrate trouble, but it does not establish that a crackling sound has the same cause. 5. Compare the local playback, OBS, and received stream
Make a short private or unlisted YouTube test before going public. Listen to the local file and OBS playback, then listen to the resulting stream recording if one is available. Note where the crackling first appears and whether it affects one file or several. If it persists, save an OBS log to share with support; a log is useful context, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

Keep YouTube and copyright checks in view
Test privately or as unlisted before a public broadcast, and make sure you have the rights needed to stream the recording and its audio. YouTube’s handling of a live stream can differ from local file playback; clean local audio does not by itself confirm the received stream is clean.
