You can stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event by running an encoder on a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM and sending its live output to YouTube over RTMPS. The video file is only the source; YouTube Live still needs an encoder feed, a configured event, and a stream key. This is a practical architecture, not a tested end-to-end Google Cloud recipe: test the exact file, encoder settings, VM, and event before relying on it.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your event. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • A prerecorded media file accessible to the VM, such as on its disk or retrieved from storage before playback.
  • A Compute Engine VM with an encoder installed and sufficient CPU, memory, storage, and outbound network capacity for your chosen output.
  • A YouTube Live event, its RTMPS ingestion URL, and its stream key.

A YouTube live stream is an encoded feed associated with a viewer-facing broadcast; uploading a file as an ordinary video does not create a live event. YouTube’s API treats the feed (a liveStream) and broadcast (a liveBroadcast) as separate resources. YouTube Live Streaming API

1. Create or schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create an encoder stream or schedule an event, then set the event’s visibility and other applicable details.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the URL provided in Live Control Room rather than assuming an endpoint. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Do not expose it in public scripts, logs, repositories, command output, or screenshots.
  3. If you schedule an event, note its start time and whether its auto-start or auto-stop options are enabled. Scheduling provides a watch page in advance; it does not start the encoder for you.

See YouTube’s current event and encoder workflow in Set up a YouTube Premiere and Stream with an encoder. For an encoder livestream, YouTube recommends preparing at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.

2. Prepare the Google Cloud VM

Choose a host for the actual workload

Select a Compute Engine machine type based on the codec, resolution, frame rate, and number of simultaneous outputs you intend to send. A prerecorded source avoids camera capture hardware, but encoding can still use substantial CPU or other VM resources. If the source is already compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements, stream-copying may avoid recompression; verify that the resulting feed is accepted and healthy before the event.

Place the source file on accessible VM storage or retrieve it before playback. The reviewed official guidance does not prescribe a particular storage layout, VM size, startup service, or FFmpeg command for looping a prerecorded file. Treat your encoder command and process management as deployment-specific, and test them rather than assuming a generic command will work.

Check outbound networking

The VM needs outbound access to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint. Google Cloud’s default VPC firewall behavior generally blocks inbound connections and permits outbound connections, but project-level VPC and hierarchical firewall policies can differ. Inspect the rules that apply to the VM; do not open inbound ports unless you have a separate management or media-ingest reason.

Google Cloud egress limits vary by VM type and destination, and advertised maximums are not guaranteed throughput. Plan for the encoded stream bitrate plus at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, as YouTube recommends. If sending a simultaneous backup feed, include its bitrate too. YouTube encoder setup guidance · Google Cloud network bandwidth

3. Configure the encoder and send the feed

Use RTMPS for the ordinary workflow

For a typical encoder setup, use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and provide the stream key in the encoder’s expected format. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS. YouTube’s guidance says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Its RTMPS instructions require the rtmps scheme, the correct endpoint and path, and port 443. Do not substitute an RTMP address or a guessed hostname. The endpoint, path, and TLS support must all match what YouTube supplies. Confirm how your encoder expects the stream key—some accept a separate key field, while others use a combined URL—without exposing the key in shared command history or logs.

Match YouTube’s encoding guidance to the source

YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and event needs, and validate the resulting stream in preview. These are encoder recommendations, not a requirement to transcode every file: compatible source streams may be passed through without recompression if your encoder and ingest settings support it. Consider other ingestion protocols only when they fit

YouTube also documents HLS and DASH ingestion. Its HLS guidance describes segment-based delivery intended for premium high-quality or high-resolution streams at relatively higher latency; DASH uses a more involved segment and manifest workflow. The documentation does not establish a universal performance winner for every file or network. Unless your production specifically needs those characteristics, RTMPS is the simpler path to focus on. 4. Test, go live, and monitor

  1. Start the encoder on the VM early enough to check that it can read the whole source, sustain the chosen output, and reach YouTube. If the video should repeat, verify that your encoder’s playout behavior actually loops it; do not assume the file will repeat automatically.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect both picture and sound. Check that the correct event is selected, that audio is present and in sync, and that the stream health does not report a problem.
  3. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event, then use the Live Control Room’s Go live control when the preview and timing are right, unless the event’s configured auto-start behavior is intended.
  4. During the event, monitor the VM process, outbound network use, YouTube preview, and stream health. If you configured a backup encoder, test failover before the event rather than discovering a configuration issue during it.
  5. At the end, stop the encoder and end the YouTube event in the order appropriate to its auto-stop settings. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a substitute for checking the finished event and archive.

YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before a scheduled encoder stream, starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand, checking preview, and monitoring audio and video. YouTube encoder setup guidance

Copyright, reused content, and event checks

Being prerecorded does not exempt a live broadcast from YouTube’s rules. Before sending the file, confirm that you have rights to every video and audio element and that the content complies with YouTube’s policies. Copyright claims or other restrictions can affect a live event, and repetitious or reused material may also matter to channel monetization eligibility. A successful preview is not a guarantee that a rights or policy issue will not arise later. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies for your circumstances.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a signal Wrong stream URL or key, incorrect RTMPS scheme or port, or blocked outbound traffic. Copy the current URL and key from the correct Live Control Room event, confirm the encoder supports RTMPS/TLS on port 443, and inspect the VM’s effective outbound firewall and network policy.
Preview appears, but video or audio is missing Unsupported or incompatible source/output settings, missing audio track, or incorrect encoder mapping. Check the file’s tracks and encoder output; use YouTube’s H.264 and AAC or MP3 guidance as a baseline, then retest preview.
Stream health degrades or playback stutters Insufficient sustained egress, congestion, VM resource pressure, or bitrate beyond capacity. Check VM CPU/resource use and outbound throughput. Ensure capacity for the stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, including any backup feed.
The video ends instead of repeating The encoder is playing the file once rather than using a verified loop/playout configuration. Test the encoder’s file-repeat behavior with a non-public event or rehearsal; confirm it continues sending after the file reaches its end.
The scheduled event does not go live at the expected time The encoder feed is not active, preview has not arrived, or auto-start/manual start settings differ from expectations. Check Live Control Room’s event and preview, then use its Go live control if manual start is configured.
Live streaming is unavailable for the channel The channel has not completed eligibility steps or has a recent restriction. Verify the channel and check Live Control Room status well in advance; initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.

Google Cloud costs to account for

Google Cloud’s VPC pricing page lists transfer from Compute Engine to certain Google products, including YouTube, as no charge. That statement covers the specified network transfer category, not the full cost of operating a stream. VM runtime, boot disk and media storage, address choices, region, taxes, and other services may affect the bill. Check the current pricing calculator and terms for your project and configuration rather than treating the transfer line as a total-cost estimate. Google Cloud VPC network pricing
