You can stream videos stored in Backblaze B2 to YouTube Live by putting a retrieval step and a playlist-capable encoder between the two services. B2 stores the files; it does not encode or broadcast them. Your encoder must retrieve or stage each video, rotate through the playlist, and send the continuous feed to YouTube with a Live server URL and stream key.
The official Backblaze and YouTube documentation describes the pieces and their interfaces, but does not establish a tested end-to-end rotation command. Treat the setup below as an architecture and implementation checklist: configure it for your chosen encoder, then test it with your actual files and network before relying on it unattended.
How the B2-to-YouTube workflow fits together
The practical path is:
- Keep video files in a B2 bucket.
- Retrieve each file through the B2 S3-compatible API, the native download API, or a configured integration.
- Make the files available to an encoder, either by staging them locally or retrieving them as needed.
- Have the media pipeline play the items in order and repeat or update the playlist.
- Send its continuous audio-video output to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key.
Backblaze B2 is object storage, not a live encoder or YouTube ingestion service. The encoder and playlist logic are separate parts of the system. For new integrations that use existing S3 tooling, Backblaze recommends its S3-compatible API. Backblaze B2 S3-compatible API and its integration guide describe the API and integration approach.
Choose how the encoder will access B2 files
Stage files before playback
Download videos to storage the encoder can read, then point the playlist process at those local files. Staging can make playback less dependent on a B2 request completing at every file transition, but it requires enough local storage and a plan for downloading new or changed objects. Test what happens if a download fails or a staged file is incomplete.

Retrieve files as the playlist needs them
An integration can fetch objects on demand, but do not assume that a general-purpose encoder can authenticate to a private B2 bucket directly. You need a configured retrieval path, such as an adapter or signed access mechanism, and you must verify that the selected encoder supports it. Backblaze documents presigned downloads for its S3-compatible API; whether a particular encoder can use them is vendor-specific.
The S3-compatible API uses regional HTTPS endpoints in the form https://s3.<region>.backblazeb2.com, supports Signature Version 4, and provides object retrieval calls. Configure the region and credentials for your bucket and use Backblaze’s S3-compatible integration guide or download documentation for the applicable method. Keep credentials private; do not put secret keys in a public playlist, web page, or stream description.

Compare the two access patterns
| Consideration | Local staging | Retrieval as needed |
|---|---|---|
| Playback startup | Depends on completing the required downloads first. | Depends on the retrieval path and when the encoder requests each object. |
| Network use | Transfers files ahead of playback; local storage is needed. | Transfers objects as the pipeline requires them; behavior depends on implementation. |
| Private-object access | Retrieval credentials are needed for the staging process. | The integration must securely authorize each retrieval; direct encoder support is not established. |
| Recovery after a B2/API interruption | Already staged files may remain available; downloads and updates need recovery handling. | The pipeline must handle failed retrievals and resume or move to another item appropriately. |
These are design trade-offs, not measured performance claims. No general latency, throughput, cost, or reliability figure is established for this setup. Measure the path you intend to use: B2 region, network, file format, and encoder configuration all matter.
Build and test the rotating playlist
Use a media pipeline that can read your chosen inputs, produce a continuous feed, and implement the rotation behavior you need. The official material cited here does not verify a particular FFmpeg command or establish that an encoder can fetch private B2 objects. Avoid copying a generic command without checking its behavior against the exact encoder version, input formats, and retrieval method you will deploy.

- Define playlist behavior. Set the order, repeat rule, and how additions or removals take effect. Decide what should happen when an object is unavailable.
- Check every media file. Confirm the encoder can handle the video and audio formats, dimensions, frame rates, and audio presence. A playlist with incompatible items can fail at a transition even if its first file plays.
- Plan transitions and buffering. Test whether one item ends before the next is ready, whether the output remains continuous, and how the pipeline handles a slow or failed download.
- Test changes and restarts. Verify how the playlist reloads, how the process behaves after an encoder restart, and whether it resumes at the expected item.
- Run a representative test. Use the intended B2 access method and a representative set of files. Review encoder logs and YouTube’s stream health before leaving the process unattended.
There is no verified universal recipe here for playlist looping, credential refresh, buffering, or reconnect behavior. Those details depend on your selected encoder and integration, so validate them in your deployment rather than treating them as platform guarantees.
Configure YouTube Live ingestion
- Set up the YouTube Live stream. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow to obtain the Live server URL and stream key. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Enter the ingestion details in the encoder. Keep the stream key private and configure it in the encoder, not in a public playlist or page. YouTube also documents secure RTMPS ingestion on port 443 in its RTMPS guide.
- Start the encoder and check stream health. YouTube’s API models the incoming feed as a
liveStream, with ingestion details and health/status information. Check the encoder logs as well as YouTube’s status before treating the feed as ready. See the LiveStreams resource. - Choose how the broadcast is managed. YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream from the viewer-facing event, a
liveBroadcast; broadcasts bind to streams. A reused stream configuration or separate scheduled broadcasts offer different operational control. Review YouTube’s broadcasts documentation and test the workflow you intend to operate.
Do not assume that keeping an encoder process alive automatically creates, schedules, or manages every viewer-facing broadcast. Configure the YouTube event workflow that matches your channel and confirm it appears as intended.

Choose a software or hardware encoder
| Option | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | You already have a computer suitable for running the media pipeline. | Supported inputs and codecs, unattended operation, playlist controls, B2 retrieval integration, and recovery behavior. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | You prefer a separate device and its supported workflow fits your inputs. | Supported media sources and formats, playlist or rotation capability, private B2 access path, and recovery features. |
Dedicated hardware is optional. The available documentation establishes the need for an encoder, not that a specific product can retrieve private B2 objects or rotate them without additional software or integration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monitor the stream and plan for failures
- B2 retrieval fails: Check endpoint region, authorization, object name, and download logs. Decide whether to retry, skip the item, or stop playback; test that behavior deliberately.
- The playlist stops at a file boundary: Check whether the next item downloaded successfully and whether its format is supported. Test transitions across every type of file in the playlist.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Recheck the server URL and stream key in the encoder, then inspect encoder logs and YouTube stream health. Keep the key private when troubleshooting or sharing configuration.
- The feed drops during a long run: Check both the encoder process and YouTube’s stream status. Reconnection and restart behavior are implementation-specific; test recovery rather than assuming it is automatic.
- A playlist update has no effect: Verify whether your pipeline reloads changes while running or only reads the playlist at startup. Use the behavior documented for your selected encoder.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; check the current YouTube encoder guidance when planning an archive, since platform policy can change. This archive behavior does not replace your own checks that the broadcast and recording are configured as intended.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Having a video in B2 does not by itself establish that you have the rights to stream it. Before adding a file, confirm you are allowed to use its video, audio, artwork, and any other protected material in a YouTube livestream. Review YouTube’s current copyright and channel rules for your content, and do not treat continuous playback or a rotating playlist as an exception to those rules. Also consider whether the channel’s programming offers sufficient original value for the audience; storage and encoder configuration do not determine whether YouTube will accept or monetize a channel.
Cost and operational trade-offs
This architecture has separate components: B2 storage and retrieval, the machine or hardware running the encoder, network capacity, and the time needed to configure and monitor playlist behavior. No sourced prices or performance figures establish the total cost for a particular deployment. Estimate it using your own storage volume, retrieval pattern, equipment, and operating requirements rather than assuming one component’s price represents the whole stream.
If you run the encoder on a computer you own, include the need to keep that computer and its network available. If you use dedicated hardware, confirm that it actually supports the retrieval and playlist workflow you need; an encoder device is not automatically a B2 integration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos playing without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating your own encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It is for YouTube, not camera-based live capture.
