How to Stream a Video Playlist 24/7 to YouTube with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a playlist continuously with FFmpeg, put compatible files in a concat-demuxer playlist, loop that input with -stream_loop -1, pace playback with -re, and send the output to the YouTube stream URL and key from Live Control Room. This can keep a broadcast running while the FFmpeg process and host remain available; it does not guarantee unattended uptime. Prepare and test the media, ingest settings, and recovery plan before relying on it.

1. Prepare compatible playlist files

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads files in sequence and adjusts their timestamps. It is not a general-purpose mixer for arbitrary media: FFmpeg says files used this way must have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in dimensions, frame rate, audio layout, codecs, or stream count can make transitions fail or produce an invalid output.

Inspect the source files before building the playlist. If they are not compatible, normalize them to a common set of video and audio properties first. Choose the target based on the source material and intended YouTube output; there is no universal profile that suits every playlist.

Create a plain-text playlist file, for example playlist.txt, with one entry per video:

file '/path/to/video-01.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-02.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-03.mp4'

Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. If a file’s stored or computed duration is wrong, the demuxer can create timestamp gaps or artifacts; its playlist format supports a duration directive to override duration metadata where necessary. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation and test any such override against the actual files.

2. Get YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into your FFmpeg setup. The stream key is a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or include it in screenshots.
  3. Use RTMPS when YouTube provides it for your stream. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS for encoder ingest, and RTMPS encrypts the transmission to Google’s servers.

Keep the actual key out of example commands and shared logs. Substitute it locally in the command below.

3. Choose output settings for YouTube

YouTube’s encoder guidance accessed on October 3, 2026 recommends H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported in that guidance. For stereo audio, it recommends 128 Kbps at a 44.1 kHz sample rate; 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC. These recommendations can change, so check YouTube’s current encoder page before deployment.

H.264 output YouTube recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of quality or a measured test. Match the bitrate to the chosen resolution and frame rate, and make sure the upload connection can sustain the combined video and audio bitrate with spare capacity. For codecs other than H.264, use the relevant current YouTube guidance rather than assuming these H.264 figures apply.

4. Loop and send the playlist with FFmpeg

For compatible files that already have appropriate codecs and timestamps, stream-copying avoids another encode. A basic command pattern is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy
  -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"

Replace RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY with the exact ingest URL and key YouTube gives you. The optional audio map, -map 0:a:0?, lets the command proceed if there is no audio stream, but it will not create audio. Confirm that the selected video and audio streams are the ones you intend to send.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

-stream_loop -1 requests infinite input looping, while -re reads file media at its native rate instead of sending it as quickly as possible. FFmpeg community examples use this pattern, but validate it with your installed FFmpeg build and playlist. Stream-copying is suitable only when the concatenated streams, timestamps, codecs, and output container/ingest requirements are compatible. It does not convert incompatible files into a consistent YouTube profile.

When to encode instead of copying

If sources differ or their codecs and timestamps are not suitable for the output, normalize them first or encode the concatenated output to a consistent profile. Encoding consumes CPU or hardware-encoder capacity. No minimum computer specification is established for this workload; measure the actual files and chosen settings on the host you plan to use. Do not assume one encoding command or preset fits mixed media.

5. Test the broadcast before leaving it running

  1. Start the FFmpeg process and open the stream preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Check picture, audio, selected streams, and stream health messages. Confirm that the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence match your intended settings.
  3. Watch at least one transition between playlist items. Look for gaps, frozen frames, timestamp errors, missing audio, or abrupt changes in format.
  4. If you enable local recording, verify that the recording is being written and can be played back.
  5. Test the recovery steps you will actually use if the host restarts, the upload connection drops, or YouTube ends the ingest. YouTube recommends testing first and monitoring stream health during an event.

“24/7” is a schedule, not an uptime guarantee. Host restarts, upload interruptions, invalid timestamps, and incompatible transitions can stop or disrupt the broadcast. The correct restart or process-supervisor configuration depends on the operating system and deployment; there is no universally correct setup established here. Plan to monitor the process and connection rather than assuming FFmpeg will recover from every failure.

6. Keep a separate archive for a continuous broadcast

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A continuous 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a dependable sole archive. If keeping a copy matters, enable local recording and check that it is being saved successfully; YouTube also recommends a local archive backup.

7. Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Concat errors or broken transitions Playlist files do not share compatible streams, codecs, or time bases, or duration metadata is inaccurate. Inspect each file, normalize incompatible media, and investigate duration metadata. Test transitions before running unattended.
Video or audio is missing The chosen input mapping selects the wrong stream, or a source has no stream of that type. Inspect the files’ streams and adjust -map deliberately. The optional audio map avoids failure when audio is absent; it does not supply it.
YouTube reports poor stream health Output settings do not match the intended profile, the upload lacks capacity, or the media has timing problems. Review Live Control Room messages, use a supported codec and CBR, set the recommended keyframe interval, and ensure the connection has bitrate headroom.
The stream stops after a network or host interruption The FFmpeg process or its connection ended; a looping input only repeats media while the process is running. Check the host, network, and FFmpeg output, then follow the recovery procedure you tested. Do not expose the stream key while diagnosing.
No complete YouTube archive appears The continuous broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Use and verify a local recording if the full archive is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain an FFmpeg host and recovery process, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded video, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
