VLC can play a sequence of media continuously, but that is not the same as VLC reliably opening a YouTube playlist URL and advancing through every video. The documented yt-dlp-to-VLC pipe example handles one YouTube video at a time. For dependable sequencing, make the playlist media locally accessible and play the files as a VLC playlist; if you want to rebroadcast that sequence, VLC’s documented VLM method uses local media inputs.
How do I stream a YouTube playlist continuously with VLC?
First decide what you mean by “stream”:
- Play a YouTube playlist in VLC: VLC must read YouTube URLs and move from one video to the next. This depends on version-sensitive YouTube integration, and the available documentation does not establish a stable, guaranteed playlist-URL workflow.
- Play a continuous sequence in VLC: VLC plays multiple media items in order. Its documentation demonstrates this with local files.
- Rebroadcast a sequence over your network: VLC’s VLM example sequences local media inputs and broadcasts them over HTTP. It does not show how to ingest a YouTube playlist URL.
If direct YouTube playlist playback is your goal, test your own setup before relying on it. If you need predictable advancement, use media files accessible to VLC and create a playlist from them.
Can VLC play a YouTube playlist URL directly?
It may work in some configurations, but it is not a dependable, documented method to assume will work for every VLC version, platform, or playlist. yt-dlp’s FAQ gives this command for sending one video to VLC:
yt-dlp -o - "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID" | vlc -

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Here, yt-dlp -o - writes media to standard output and VLC reads it from standard input. The example uses an individual video URL; it does not verify playlist extraction, automatic advancement, or continuous playback across a playlist. See the yt-dlp FAQ.
VLC’s YouTube integration has also been subject to compatibility changes. A January 6, 2026, VideoLAN developer-list discussion concerned a proposal to remove a broken youtube.lua script. A contributor said it still worked for their YouTube live streams, but that is an individual report—not a general compatibility guarantee or proof of playlist support.

More predictable option: make a local VLC playlist
For sequential playback, arrange media that VLC can access as a playlist. yt-dlp documents playlist processing, playlist-indexed output names, and an archive that tracks successfully handled video IDs. These features can help organize a local-media workflow, but they do not themselves guarantee uninterrupted VLC playback or gapless transitions. Review the tools’ documentation and use them in accordance with applicable platform terms.
- Make the media accessible locally. Use files you have the right to use, or another source VLC can access. If you use yt-dlp, its Debian trixie manual page documents playlist-indexed output patterns and standard-output behavior. Output naming can help keep a sequence organized; it does not prove that VLC will automatically receive and advance through a YouTube playlist.
- Open the items in VLC as a playlist. Add the files in the order you want to play. Check the playlist order before starting, especially if filenames sort differently from the intended sequence.
- Enable repeat if the sequence should restart. Use VLC’s playlist repeat control if you want the list to begin again after its final item. VLC’s controls and labels can vary by platform and version; consult the VLC User Documentation for your edition.
- Test the handoff. Play a short sequence and confirm that VLC advances from one item to the next and, if required, returns to the start. This checks the behavior you need rather than assuming playlist extraction guarantees it.
Rebroadcast local files with VLC’s VLM playlist method
If by “stream” you mean sending the sequence to other devices on your network, VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 shows a VLM setup for broadcasting multiple local media inputs over HTTP. Its example uses sout-keep so the stream does not break when a song ends. This is a local-file broadcast workflow, not a YouTube playlist URL workflow.

Follow the documented configuration and commands in VLM Example: Broadcast A Playlist. The example’s receive side uses VLC to open the HTTP stream. Confirm that the files are available at the configured paths and that your network permits the receiving device to connect. The documentation describes VLC 3.0; do not assume every interface or setting is identical in other releases.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Setup | What it supports | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open a YouTube playlist directly in VLC | Fewest steps if the integration works | Potentially direct playback from YouTube | Current compatibility and playlist advancement are not established as stable; behavior can vary by version. |
| Local media playlist in VLC | Prepare accessible files and arrange them in order | Sequential playback in VLC | Requires preparation; playlist extraction alone does not establish continuous playback. |
| VLC VLM broadcast of local files | Configure multiple local inputs and an HTTP broadcast | Sequential rebroadcast to devices that can reach the stream | The documented example is for local files, not direct YouTube playlist ingestion. |
Troubleshooting playlist playback
- A single YouTube video fails in VLC: Check whether your VLC and yt-dlp versions support the current URL handling. YouTube integration changes over time; the single-video pipe example is not a compatibility guarantee.
- One video plays, but the next does not: Distinguish single-video playback from playlist advancement. The documented pipe command covers one video, not a verified multi-video handoff. Test a short public playlist in your actual setup, or use an ordered local playlist.
- The playlist works on one device but not another: VLC and its YouTube integration are version- and platform-sensitive. Compare the versions and test the same short playlist on each device rather than assuming identical behavior.
- A VLM broadcast stops between files: Verify that the VLM inputs point to accessible local files and that the configuration follows VLC’s documented playlist example, including its use of
sout-keep. - The next item is the wrong one: Check the order in VLC’s playlist, not just the order in which files appear in a folder. Playlist-indexed filenames can help organize output, but VLC’s actual queue determines playback order.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than play a YouTube playlist inside VLC, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
