To reduce black screens or freezes between playlist items, make the files compatible before concatenating them, then send one continuous, correctly paced output to YouTube. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when inputs have matching streams and properties; if they differ, normalize them or use the concat filter and re-encode. No single FFmpeg flag guarantees gapless playback across arbitrary files, networks, and viewers.
Why a playlist can go black or freeze between videos
A playlist transition is only as reliable as the media and the continuous output pipeline. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is not a general-purpose format converter: its inputs need compatible streams and properties, including codecs and time bases. A September 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion describes transition failures when files differed in format, dimensions, and aspect ratio; the respondent quoted the documentation requirement that the files have the same streams, codecs, and time base. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and the September 2024 mailing-list thread explain the constraint.
Even compatible files can have irregular timestamps, unexpected stream lengths, or audio and video that end at different times. Re-encoding can also overload a machine, while network interruptions can disrupt delivery. The result depends on both the feed FFmpeg generates and downstream buffering and playback, so test the actual transitions rather than assuming a particular option makes them seamless.
Inspect and prepare every playlist item
Compare the streams
Before building the live output, inspect each file with ffprobe or an equivalent tool. Compare the video and audio streams for codec, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, time base, sample rate, channel layout, and duration or timestamps. Decide which video and audio streams you intend to send; avoid accidentally concatenating unwanted tracks.

Choose one common output profile if sources differ
If playlist items have different stream layouts or properties, create normalized staging copies or decode, filter, and encode them through a concat filter graph. Standardize resolution, frame rate, pixel format, video and audio codecs, audio sample rate, and channel layout. Normalizing helps compatibility, but it is not a universal repair for bad timestamps or content whose audio and video end at different times. Inspect and test those cases too.

When paths require it, FFmpeg commonly accepts the input with -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation for the exact option behavior. The demuxer can avoid re-encoding when the media is compatible; it does not convert mismatched inputs. In particular, -c copy copies streams rather than making their codecs, time bases, or layouts match.
Use the concat filter when conversion is needed
The concat filter is the more flexible route when inputs need decoding, filtering, or re-encoding to produce a common output. Its filter graph must map the intended streams and account for each input’s video and audio. Consult the FFmpeg FAQ on joining video files and the documentation for your installed version; the exact graph depends on the number and properties of the files.

The trade-off is practical: demuxer-based stream copy uses less encoding work but requires conforming inputs; filter-based conversion can accommodate more variation, at the cost of processing time and CPU or GPU capacity. Re-encode to a resolution and frame rate the machine can sustain, and test for overload.
Configure one continuous output for YouTube Live
Pace file input and looping
For file input sent as a live feed, -re is commonly used for real-time pacing, and -stream_loop -1 can request repeated input. Confirm option behavior and ordering for your FFmpeg version. Neither option repairs incompatible media or guarantees a clean transition.

Match YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube’s English-language encoder guidance retrieved October 3, 2026 lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, rather than treating one example as universal. In that guide, H.264 at 1080p30 has a recommended 14 Mbps bitrate, while H.264 at 720p30 has a recommended 8 Mbps bitrate. These are platform recommendations for those specific modes, not independent performance measurements or required rates for every stream. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for your selected mode.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Retrieve the stream URL and key for the event in Live Control Room, and use the RTMPS URL when supported by your encoder. A stream key works like a password: do not expose it in a public script, screen recording, or log; if it is exposed, reset it in Studio. See YouTube’s stream key guidance and RTMPS guidance.

Treat this command shape as a schematic
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt ...encoder and output options... -f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<stream key>"
This is not a turnkey command: encoder, mapping, rate control, output container, protocol URL, and flags depend on the playlist and installed FFmpeg build. If the inputs differ, preprocess them or use a concat-filter workflow. Check the local FFmpeg documentation and test the start, every transition, and the loop boundary before relying on the stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the transition and network before going public
- Create a private or unlisted test event in YouTube Live Control Room and start the FFmpeg output with the intended playlist.
- Watch the preview and stream-health messages, especially while one file ends and the next begins. Check both picture and sound.
- Test the loop boundary as well as ordinary transitions; a playlist that works once may still fail when it returns to the first item.
- Monitor CPU or GPU load during re-encoding and confirm the machine remains stable.
- Check upload capacity and stability while streaming. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom and monitoring the stream; network disruptions can break delivery. See YouTube streaming tips.
Troubleshooting common transition problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg errors or a broken transition when a new file starts | Inputs have incompatible streams, codecs, time bases, or other properties. | Compare the files with ffprobe; normalize them to a common profile or use a concat filter and re-encode. Do not expect stream copy to convert them. |
| Brief black screen, frozen picture, or audio discontinuity despite compatible codecs | Irregular timestamps, unexpected stream durations, or audio and video that do not end together. | Inspect timestamps and durations, then test the exact transition. There is no single general-purpose flag established here to repair every such case. |
| Encoding slows, drops frames, or becomes unstable after switching to a filter graph | Re-encoding may exceed available CPU or GPU capacity. | Test under sustained load and choose an output resolution and frame rate the machine can encode reliably. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers see interruptions unrelated to file boundaries | Upload bandwidth or connection stability may be inadequate. | Check available upload speed under streaming conditions and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. A wired Ethernet connection may help with connection reliability, but it cannot fix media compatibility or timestamp problems. |
| The feed does not connect or YouTube flags ingest settings | Wrong event URL or key, unsupported protocol, or mismatched encoder settings. | Retrieve the URL and key from the correct Live Control Room event, protect the key, and verify protocol, codec, keyframe interval, audio, and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuously running YouTube playlist rather than operating FFmpeg on your own machine, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the same flat price per slot applies to any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
