How to Stream an IP Camera to a Website

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To show an IP camera on a website, send its feed to a media server or hosted relay, convert it into a browser-compatible format such as WebRTC or HLS, then embed the resulting player or stream. A browser generally cannot play a camera’s RTSP feed directly. Choose WebRTC when low delay matters most; choose HLS when broad device compatibility is the priority.

What you need to stream a camera on a website

The camera and a website browser usually speak different streaming formats. Many IP cameras provide an RTSP feed, while browsers need a browser-compatible delivery method. A media server or hosted relay bridges the two: it takes in the camera feed, packages it for browser playback, and provides a player or output to embed on your page. Wowza describes this RTSP-ingest-to-browser-player workflow in its technical overview.

  • An IP camera that supports RTSP or another ingest method accepted by your chosen server or service.
  • The camera’s local network address and exact stream URL, plus any required credentials.
  • A self-managed media server or a hosted relay that can deliver browser-compatible video.
  • A website page where you can add the service’s player or embed code, with access controls appropriate to the video.

Check whether your camera supports RTSP

Support depends on the exact model and sometimes its power type. Check the manufacturer’s documentation or camera settings for RTSP support and confirm that RTSP is enabled. TP-Link, for example, says its wired Tapo cameras support RTSP and ONVIF, while many battery-powered models generally do not. Those details apply to the models covered by TP-Link’s support guide; do not assume another brand uses the same capabilities or stream paths.

Find the camera’s local IP address and model-specific RTSP path in its interface or vendor documentation. If the camera requires credentials, create a dedicated camera account if the vendor allows it, rather than embedding a personal account’s details in a website. Some vendor examples provide separate high- and standard-quality paths, but the path format is model-specific.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to find and verify the camera’s RTSP URL

  1. Find the camera on your local network. Use the camera interface, router device list, or manufacturer instructions to identify its local IP address.
  2. Locate the RTSP setting and path. Consult the exact model’s documentation or settings. Enable RTSP if necessary and note the port, path, and credentials. Do not guess a path from another camera brand or model.
  3. Test the feed on the local network. Open the RTSP URL in a compatible player such as VLC. If playback fails here, check the address, path, credentials, RTSP setting, camera power, and local network before troubleshooting your website or relay.

RTSP and ONVIF are not interchangeable: RTSP carries the stream, while ONVIF supports interoperability and device capabilities. ONVIF’s Profile V documentation describes functions including secure, low-latency live video and audio streaming, efficient cloud recording, and event notifications; the page labels Profile V a Release Candidate. Support for ONVIF does not by itself establish that a camera has the RTSP path or browser output you need.

Choose a server or hosted relay

Self-managed media server

A self-managed server gives you direct control over ingest and output, but you are responsible for configuring and maintaining the server, protecting access, and making sure it can deliver the stream to your intended viewers. Wowza documents RTSP ingest with browser delivery using WebRTC or HLS. Check the server’s current documentation for the exact product configuration and requirements.

Hosted camera relay

A hosted service can package more of the workflow, potentially including a browser watch page or website embed. OctoStream’s overview documents RTSP camera pull, watch pages, website embeds, scheduling, recordings, and external restreaming. These are provider-described features, not a comparison of service cost, capacity, security, or service levels. Check the service’s current terms, access controls, and supported camera inputs before relying on it.

Which approach fits?

  • Choose self-management if you need operational control and can take responsibility for server setup and ongoing maintenance.
  • Consider a hosted relay if you want the provider to supply more of the relay and browser-player workflow; verify the features and terms that matter to your deployment.

The available provider descriptions do not establish a universal cost, capacity, or performance advantage for either approach.

Choose WebRTC or HLS for browser playback

Output Best starting point Trade-off and caveat
WebRTC Viewing where low delay is important. Actual end-to-end delay depends on the camera, server, network, and player. Verify browser and player requirements for your setup.
HLS Viewing where broad device compatibility is the priority. Compatibility depends on the exact player and browser requirements. Measure the deployed system rather than assuming a particular delay.

Wowza positions WebRTC as its low-latency choice and HLS as the compatibility-oriented choice. Neither label guarantees a specific delay or universal browser support. Test the actual camera, server or service, network, player, and devices you plan to use.

Embed the stream on your website

  1. Configure the relay output. Use its WebRTC or HLS output and any access controls required for your intended audience.
  2. Add the player or embed code. Follow the server or hosted service’s instructions to place its player on the relevant page. The page should point to the browser-compatible output, not directly to the camera’s RTSP URL.
  3. Test on your target devices. Check playback in the desktop and mobile browsers your visitors are likely to use. Confirm that the player loads and that any authentication behaves as intended.
  4. Test failure and recovery paths. Check what viewers see if the camera feed, network, credentials, or relay becomes unavailable, and verify that the system resumes as expected after an interruption.

Keep the camera and embed private

Do not expose the camera’s RTSP or ONVIF interface publicly just to make a website embed work. TP-Link’s support documentation says: “Only use RTSP and ONVIF on trusted local networks with encrypted Wi-Fi. These protocols are not recommended for use on public networks.” For remote camera access, TP-Link recommends an encrypted VPN. For website viewing, expose only the intended relay output and apply access controls suited to whether the page is private or public.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The RTSP feed will not play in VLC on the local network. The camera does not support RTSP, RTSP is disabled, or the address, path, credentials, or network connection is wrong. Confirm the exact model’s RTSP support and settings; recheck the local IP, model-specific path, credentials, and camera connection.
The camera feed works locally, but the website player is blank. The browser is being pointed at RTSP directly, or the relay output or embed is misconfigured. Use the server’s browser-compatible WebRTC or HLS output and follow its embed instructions.
The player works on one device but not another. The selected output or player does not meet that browser or device’s requirements. Check the player’s documented browser requirements and test the alternative output, including HLS when compatibility is the priority.
Playback stops after an interruption. The camera, network, credentials, server, or hosted relay may have lost its connection. Test the camera feed separately, check connectivity and credentials, then confirm whether the server or service resumes delivery after recovery.
The embed exposes sensitive access details. Camera credentials or a direct camera URL may have been placed in public page code. Remove camera credentials from the public page; use a protected relay output and appropriate authentication or access controls.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not ingest an IP camera feed or stream camera video. The camera workflow above needs an RTSP-capable camera and a media server or camera relay. If your goal instead is to loop prerecorded videos on YouTube, StreamNeo’s flow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

  • Nothing at home has to stay on: StreamNeo runs the uploaded-video stream in the cloud.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
