Create the event in YouTube Live Control Room, connect the encoder with the event’s server URL and stream key, then preview the feed before going public. YouTube does not provide a native button that turns an archive playlist into a live stream; playlist playback must be arranged in your chosen media or production software.
Before you start: check channel access and video rights
Confirm that livestreaming is enabled
YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and livestreaming tips for current requirements.
Review every recording
Use broadcasts you own or have permission to rebroadcast. Check for game footage restrictions, licensed music, third-party clips, voice chat, and overlays embedded in the recordings. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. A rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist even if you have a license; otherwise, YouTube may show a placeholder, issue a warning, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. If the completed stream is archived, a Content ID claim may be applied afterward. An unlisted or private event does not remove your rights obligations or prevent scanning. YouTube’s livestream terms say providers must have the necessary worldwide rights for live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. The terms specifically include rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants: YouTube Terms of Service.

Set up the playlist and encoder
Choose how the videos will play
Arrange the recordings in the intended order in a local media playback or production application, then send that application’s output to an encoder. An encoder converts video into a format YouTube can receive; it can also carry gameplay and production overlays. The exact steps for building a multi-file queue depend on the application or device you choose. YouTube’s encoder documentation explains the connection to YouTube, but does not verify a particular playlist application or provide a universal multi-file playlist recipe. Test the chosen source and transitions before scheduling the event.
Create an event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room, then create or schedule the event.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the matching connection fields in your encoder. The stream key works like a password: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep it private.
- Start the playlist playback and encoder. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then check video, audio, order, transitions, visibility, and the event watch page before making the event public.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use that time for a private or unlisted test and to confirm the playlist behaves as intended. Those visibility settings are useful for testing, not a substitute for obtaining rights.

Choose a playback approach for the job

Choose based on whether the playlist needs to run unattended, whether you want local control, the intended run length, and whether your current setup is adequate. YouTube’s published information does not provide a comparative benchmark for cost, reliability, or video quality, so those options cannot be ranked on those grounds.
Plan bandwidth, monitoring, and the archive
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total bitrate for the primary stream and any backup stream. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee for every connection. Check the encoder’s outgoing bitrate and available upload capacity before the event; avoid other uploads that could consume the margin.

Monitor the live preview
Before going public, confirm the preview shows the right recording and that its audio is audible and synchronized. Watch for an unintended gap, incorrect playlist order, or a transition that leaves the output blank. During the event, keep Live Control Room open so you can notice warnings or loss of the incoming feed.
Keep a local copy
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording or other backup if you need a dependable copy of the event. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Troubleshooting common failures
- Go Live is unavailable: verify the channel and check for a livestream restriction. If this is the channel’s first enablement, allow up to 24 hours for access to become available.
- YouTube receives no feed: check that the encoder has the correct event’s server URL and stream key, that the encoder is running, and that the computer has an internet connection. If you regenerate or change the key, update the encoder to match.
- The preview appears, but the wrong video or order plays: correct the playlist in the playback source, then run it again and inspect the preview before the public event. Playlist controls vary by application.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: review YouTube’s warning and identify any third-party music, clips, broadcasts, or other material. A license may not be enough if the rights holder also needs to allowlist your channel in Content ID.
- The stream drops or quality becomes unstable: check the encoder’s connection and available upload bandwidth, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reconnect the encoder and confirm the preview returns before continuing.
- The finished event is missing from archives: YouTube does not guarantee capture for streams over 12 hours. Keep a local recording for long broadcasts.
