You can loop a Hindi devotional video on a Raspberry Pi and send it to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but a continuous stream depends on more than the command: the Pi must sustain the selected encoding, the internet connection needs upload headroom, and the channel must have permission to stream the content. Set up an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, test the actual media and hardware, and add a way to detect and recover from interruptions before leaving it unattended.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible for livestreaming. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
  • A Raspberry Pi, a suitable power supply, stable network access, storage for your video, and an FFmpeg build that supports the input and output options you intend to use. Do not assume every Pi model or FFmpeg build offers the same encoding acceleration.
  • A video file or playlist you are authorized to stream, with working audio.
  • A stream URL and private stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.

A Raspberry Pi can be a compact encoder, but the available technical comparisons do not establish that a particular Pi will encode every source format indefinitely. The source codec, resolution, frame rate, FFmpeg build, cooling, power, and network all affect whether the setup remains stable.

Create a YouTube encoder stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder option. Select the visibility and other stream details appropriate for your test and broadcast.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Enter them only on the Raspberry Pi; do not publish them in a script repository, paste them into a public support post, or expose them in a screen recording.
  4. Use the stream health and preview indicators in Live Control Room when testing. The encoder needs to send to the ingest URL and key associated with that stream.

YouTube’s setup and encoder instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Choose a profile the Pi can sustain

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported video codecs. Its encoder guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube’s current settings table lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as recommended. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof that a specific Raspberry Pi can encode that profile continuously.

Setting Cautious starting point What to verify
Video resolution and frame rate 720p at 30 fps, if the source and Pi can sustain it Preview quality, encoder load, and sustained temperature during a representative test
Video codec H.264 for the example command below Whether the installed FFmpeg build and Pi can encode the chosen profile in real time
Bitrate control Constant bitrate (CBR) Set a bitrate appropriate for the selected profile and YouTube’s current Live Control Room guidance
Keyframe interval 2 seconds At 30 fps, use 60 frames per keyframe interval; keep the interval at or below YouTube’s four-second limit
Stereo audio AAC; YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps Confirm the audio stream is present, audible, and mapped correctly

See YouTube’s encoder settings for current ingest details. The Raspberry Pi Foundation has published an H.264 performance comparison between Pi 5 software encoding and a Pi 4 hardware-encoder configuration, but that comparison does not establish identical acceleration support across Pi models or FFmpeg builds: Raspberry Pi News.

Prepare the devotional video and check rights

Confirm playback and audio

Play the file on the Pi before streaming. Check that the picture plays smoothly, the intended audio is present, and the audio is not unexpectedly silent, clipped, or out of sync. If you use a playlist or several files, test transitions and verify that the intended material repeats in the right order.

Make sure the stream is authorized

You must have the necessary rights to stream both the video and its music. YouTube’s livestream terms say that providers represent and warrant they have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. This is YouTube’s term, not individualized legal advice; read the YouTube Terms of Service.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder, a warning, or temporary interruption or termination. Even when music is licensed, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream not to be interrupted. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream restrictions. Devotional subject matter does not itself establish that a recording is free to use: check the rights to the specific performance and recording.

Loop a file with FFmpeg and send it to YouTube

The following is a configuration template, not a tested command for every Pi, media file, or FFmpeg build. Replace the output URL with the ingest URL and private key from Live Control Room. Keep the key out of public files and shell histories where possible; for regular use, consider storing the output URL in a protected environment or configuration file with restricted permissions.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i devotional-video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
  -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY'
  • -re reads the file at a real-time rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.
  • -stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely. FFmpeg option placement matters: input options belong before the relevant -i, while output options apply to the output that follows.
  • -c:v libx264 uses software H.264 encoding. It may overload a Pi at the chosen resolution or frame rate. If it cannot keep up, try a lower resolution or frame rate, or use compatible pre-encoded media with stream copy where appropriate. Hardware encoding depends on the specific Pi and FFmpeg build.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to a two-second interval at 30 fps. If you change frame rate, adjust the GOP to retain the intended interval.
  • The example’s 2500k video bitrate is a low-load starting value, not YouTube’s recommended 720p30 bitrate and not a guarantee of suitable quality or performance. Compare the chosen profile with YouTube’s current ingest guidance and test the Pi under sustained load.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes audio as AAC at the sample rate and bitrate YouTube recommends for stereo advanced settings. Confirm the input has the audio stream you intend to send.
  • -f flv selects the container commonly used for RTMP-family ingest.

Inspect FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s preview before relying on the setup. If your input is already encoded in a compatible format and you use stream copy, remove encoding options that no longer apply and confirm the resulting codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, and audio match the ingest configuration.

Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended

  1. Start with a test stream using unlisted visibility or another suitable test arrangement.
  2. Use representative video movement and audio, not just a static menu or silent clip. Watch the YouTube preview and stream-health messages.
  3. Observe the Pi during a sustained run. Check whether FFmpeg keeps pace, the device stays stable under load, power remains reliable, storage is sufficient, and cooling is adequate.
  4. Check upload capacity while the stream is running. YouTube advises keeping the total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and recommends about 20% headroom. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee for every connection; an unstable link can still interrupt a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  5. Simulate or safely observe interruption recovery before depending on unattended operation. Decide how you will notice a stopped FFmpeg process, network outage, power loss, or YouTube disconnect, and what will restart or alert you.

A 24/7 broadcast is a system, not just an FFmpeg command. Reliable operation depends on the encoder, power, network, thermal behavior, storage, monitoring, and recovery all working together. No published statistic establishes a particular Raspberry Pi’s uptime for continuous Hindi devotional streaming.

Plan for the YouTube archive separately

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single continuous 24/7 session therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete recording. If an archive matters, plan shorter sessions and consider making a local recording, provided storage and rights allow it. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube shows no incoming stream Wrong ingest URL or key, stream not started in Live Control Room, or network blockage Confirm the stream is created and active, re-check the server URL and private key, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error output.
Video stutters or FFmpeg falls behind The Pi cannot sustain software encoding, or the selected source/profile is too demanding Check encoder load; reduce resolution or frame rate, use compatible pre-encoded media with stream copy if suitable, or use a configuration with supported hardware encoding.
Stream health reports instability Insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity, competing traffic, or a poor network link Measure available upload while streaming, reduce the stream bitrate, improve the connection, and preserve YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% headroom.
Picture is present but audio is missing or wrong Missing input audio, incorrect stream mapping, unsupported encoding, or a muted source Test the file locally, inspect available streams with FFmpeg, and explicitly map the intended audio stream if the file has multiple tracks.
Stream stops after a copyright warning or interruption YouTube detected third-party content or the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel Resolve the rights issue with the relevant owner; if licensed, ask whether the channel must be added to the Content ID allowlist.
Stream runs but no complete archive appears The live session exceeded YouTube’s archive threshold Use shorter sessions if a YouTube archive is required, and do not rely on a session longer than 12 hours to be captured.
