How to Stream in Portrait and Landscape at the Same Time

Choose a dual-format workflow based on destinations and framing: YouTube Auto crops, while TikTok LIVE Studio, Restream, OBS, and Streamlabs offer other layout options.

You can broadcast portrait (9:16) and landscape (16:9) versions of a live stream at the same time using YouTube Live Control Room, TikTok LIVE Studio, Restream Studio, OBS with Restream’s Vertical plugin, or Streamlabs Desktop. The right choice depends on where you’re streaming and whether a center crop is good enough or you need a separately composed portrait scene. YouTube’s built-in Auto option is the simplest route, but it makes portrait by center-cropping the horizontal feed.

Choose the workflow that fits your stream

Start with the platforms you need to reach, then decide whether both orientations can share one composition. A centered speaker or simple scene may survive a crop; gameplay, text, HUDs, and overlays often need separate framing. The methods below have different routing and layout behavior, so preview both outputs before your broadcast.

Method Best fit Layout behavior and constraints
YouTube Live Control Room One YouTube stream where a center-cropped portrait version is acceptable, or an eligible creator using encoder-based dual streaming. Auto crops the horizontal feed to portrait. The encoder route uses a second, vertical stream key. Third-party encoder dual streaming is still rolling out, and vertical cannot be removed after the stream starts. YouTube Help
TikTok LIVE Studio Dual layout A TikTok LIVE workflow where portrait is the primary layout and landscape can adapt from it. Sources sync from portrait into landscape; you can reposition or resize synced sources in landscape, but it is not an entirely independent scene. Chatbox and ranking widgets are removed because portrait does not support them. TikTok LIVE Studio Help Center
Restream Studio A Restream Studio session sending outputs in both orientations to configured channels. Assign each channel Portrait or Landscape before going live. The same Studio session supplies both layouts, and orientation cannot be changed midstream. Restream Help Center
OBS with Restream Vertical plugin Creators who want a distinct vertical scene alongside their main OBS scene through Restream. The vertical output uses OBS’s primary audio mixer and inherits main encoding settings, though a separate bitrate is available. YouTube receives separate live events for the two orientations via this Restream route. Restream Help Center
Streamlabs Desktop Dual Output Creators who want separate horizontal and vertical canvases with per-source visibility controls. Configure each orientation and assign destinations at Go Live. Streamlabs’ guide recommends 1080×1920 at 30 FPS for TikTok. Its guide says multiple destinations within each orientation require Streamlabs Ultra. Streamlabs Support

Prepare both compositions before going live

  1. List destinations and formats. For each destination, confirm whether you need portrait, landscape, or both. Check current account eligibility for third-party encoder features before scheduling a YouTube broadcast.
  2. Choose crop or separate framing. A center crop is quick, but can cut off a player, game HUD, captions, or essential overlays. If each version needs different framing, choose a workflow with a distinct vertical scene or separate canvases.
  3. Build and inspect each layout. Keep faces, gameplay action, important text, and alerts inside the safe visible area in both formats. Check legibility at the size viewers will actually see rather than assuming the landscape arrangement will adapt cleanly.
  4. Set orientations and routing before broadcast. Restream Studio channel orientations must be selected before going live. For YouTube’s encoder route, select Encoder and add the second stream key for vertical. Treat stream keys as passwords: use the correct key for each output and do not publish or share them.
  5. Preview picture and sound on both outputs. Verify framing, overlays, audio levels, and destination assignment. If using an OBS plugin, remember that the vertical audio comes from the primary OBS mixer; check the separate bitrate setting if needed.
  6. Start only after confirming the final layout. In particular, YouTube’s vertical output cannot be removed after the stream starts, and Restream Studio orientation cannot be changed midstream.

Set up each option

YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room > Stream settings.
  2. Enable Dual stream. Auto is selected by default and creates portrait by center-cropping the landscape feed.
  3. If you have access to encoder-based dual streaming and need to supply the formats yourself, select Encoder and add the second stream key for the vertical output.
  4. Preview the portrait crop or both encoder outputs, check the correct stream key is assigned to each, and then start the stream. Availability of third-party encoder dual streaming is staged, so it may not be available on every creator account.

YouTube describes simultaneous output as “both horizontal (16:9 aspect ratio) and vertical (9:16 aspect ratio) formats at the same time.” The built-in Auto route derives the vertical version from the horizontal feed; it does not provide an independently composed portrait scene.

TikTok LIVE Studio Dual layout

  1. In a scene, right-click and choose Switch layout > Dual layout.
  2. Begin with the portrait layout. TikTok’s instruction is: “In a dual layout scene, you start by editing the portrait layout.”
  3. Review the landscape version after the sources sync, then reposition or resize synced sources for landscape as needed.
  4. Check that required widgets are present: chatbox and ranking widgets are removed because they are unsupported in portrait.
  5. Preview both layouts before going LIVE.

This approach syncs sources between orientations, rather than giving you two fully independent scenes. If a landscape-specific element is essential, confirm the current Studio controls can accommodate it before relying on this workflow.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Restream Studio

  1. Add your channels in Restream Studio and assign each channel an orientation: Portrait or Landscape.
  2. Arrange and inspect the Studio elements in both aspect ratios, checking that text and important visuals are not crowded or obscured.
  3. Confirm the channel orientations before starting the broadcast. Restream says the choice cannot be changed while live.
  4. Start the session only after previewing both outputs and checking audio.

OBS with Restream Vertical plugin

  1. Install Restream’s Vertical plugin for macOS or Windows, following its current setup instructions.
  2. Create and arrange a vertical scene in addition to your main OBS scene.
  3. In Restream, set each destination channel’s orientation before going live.
  4. Check the vertical scene and audio. The vertical output uses the primary OBS audio mixer and inherits the main OBS encoding settings; set a separate bitrate if your configuration needs one.
  5. Start OBS and confirm the intended output reaches each destination. Through this Restream route, YouTube receives separate live events for the two orientations.

Streamlabs Desktop Dual Output

  1. Connect your destinations in Streamlabs Desktop and enable Dual Output.
  2. Configure the horizontal and vertical tabs separately. Arrange sources and use per-source visibility controls to decide what appears on each canvas.
  3. Preview both outputs, then select the vertical or landscape destination assignments when you choose Go Live.
  4. For TikTok, Streamlabs’ guide recommends 1080×1920 at 30 FPS. The guide says multiple destinations within each orientation require Streamlabs Ultra.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a different tool for a different job: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream. It does not create a live camera broadcast or simultaneous portrait-and-landscape outputs, so use one of the workflows above when you need dual-format live production.

If your goal is instead to keep pre-recorded content live on YouTube, upload it to StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Common problems and fixes

  • The portrait version cuts off important content: YouTube Auto center-crops the horizontal feed. Reframe the horizontal composition around the center, or use a workflow with a distinct portrait scene or separate canvases.
  • A TikTok widget disappears in Dual layout: Chatbox and ranking widgets are unsupported in portrait and are removed. Check the resulting scene and plan a layout that does not depend on those widgets being present in both versions.
  • You cannot change orientation after starting: Restream Studio locks channel orientation during the stream; YouTube does not allow removing vertical after the stream begins. End and configure a new broadcast rather than assuming a live change will work.
  • YouTube does not show the encoder dual-stream option: Third-party encoder dual streaming is still rolling out and is not available to every creator. Use the available Auto route if its crop works for you, or verify account availability again before an event.
  • Vertical sound differs from expectation in OBS: The Restream plugin’s vertical output uses the primary OBS audio mixer. Correct the mix there and review the vertical bitrate setting separately if required.
  • Overlays or text look fine in one output but not the other: Aspect-ratio adaptation changes available space. Preview both canvases, reposition or resize elements where supported, and keep critical content inside the visible area.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

Having the technical ability to send two formats does not establish that you have permission to broadcast every video, song, or game asset in them. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and check the applicable platform rules and account eligibility before going live. For YouTube encoder dual streaming, feature access itself may vary by creator during rollout.
