To stream vertically with Streamlabs Mobile, set up a scene, choose the camera or screen-capture source, set your phone to portrait before starting—especially for screen sharing—and check the destination’s live preview. Portrait orientation controls the shape of your video; it does not guarantee that YouTube will place a third-party stream in the Shorts feed.
How do I stream in portrait mode with the Streamlabs Mobile app?
- Install and prepare the app. Get Streamlabs Mobile from your device’s app store, sign in, and allow camera and microphone access when prompted.
- Create or select a scene. Open the main menu and tap Scenes. Choose a scene or create one, then add the widgets, overlays, text, or images you want viewers to see.
- Review streaming settings. Open Streaming Settings and check the available video, audio, camera, and screen-capture options. You can review resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio input, camera selection, and orientation-related controls. The controls vary between iOS and Android, and there is no single bitrate or frame rate that suits every phone and network.
- Choose a destination and source. Select the platform you plan to stream to and choose camera or screen capture. Available destinations and options can change, so confirm what your installed app version offers.
- Set your orientation before going live. For a camera stream, frame the shot in portrait. For screen capture, turn the phone to the orientation you intend to stream in before starting, and keep it there while live.
- Preview, arrange, and go live. Check the scene in the app, start the stream, and inspect the platform’s live preview to confirm the framing and orientation look right to viewers.
Before starting, charge your phone, close unnecessary background apps, and silence notifications so they are less likely to interrupt the stream or appear on screen. A phone tripod or adjustable holder is optional if you want hands-free camera framing.
Arrange the scene for a portrait picture
Streamlabs’ scene-editing guide describes editing widgets in landscape view, even when preparing portrait content. In the camera behavior described there, portrait video can have black areas at its sides, and widgets placed far to the left or right may appear in those areas. Treat that as a layout consideration for the described editor behavior, not a promise that every platform will receive a 16:9 stream or display the scene identically.
Keep essential text and graphics inside the visible area of your portrait composition. Preview the scene before going live, and check it on the destination where viewers will watch; a layout that looks acceptable in the editor may not fit every viewing surface.

Camera stream or screen capture?

What happens if I rotate my phone during a screen-share stream?
Streamlabs has documented a case where a screen-share stream starts in landscape and the phone is then rotated to portrait. The output can remain locked to landscape while the display rotates, making the shared image look smaller. The article listed disabling orientation lock as a workaround for Twitch or Trovo, but reported no workaround for YouTube and other platforms at the time it was updated. Because app behavior and issue status can change, the safer approach is to set your intended orientation before going live and check the current app behavior.
Does portrait mode put a YouTube stream in the Shorts feed?
No. A vertically oriented broadcast sent through third-party streaming software may not be detected for YouTube’s Shorts feed. A portrait-shaped stream and YouTube’s specific vertical-live discovery experience are related, but they are not the same workflow. Check YouTube’s live preview and current setup options rather than assuming that rotating your phone activates Shorts placement.

YouTube documents a separate Live Control Room workflow for horizontal and vertical output using a third-party encoder and matching stream keys over RTMP(S). YouTube states: “By default, your live streams will go live in both horizontal (16:9 aspect ratio) and vertical (9:16 aspect ratio) formats at the same time when you stream from the Live Control Room.” That statement describes streaming from the Live Control Room; it is not a guarantee about a stream started in Streamlabs Mobile.
Single-platform streaming or multistreaming?
Choose the destination based on where your audience should watch. Streamlabs’ mobile guide lists connections including Twitch, YouTube, X, Facebook, TikTok, and Kick, and describes custom RTMP for iOS. The app’s available destinations may change, so check your installed version. Streamlabs documents simultaneous streaming to multiple platforms from the app as a Streamlabs Ultra feature; Ultra is not required merely to choose portrait orientation.

Troubleshooting portrait streams
- The stream looks horizontal or has unexpected side areas: Check the platform preview and the scene layout. Confirm whether the destination is receiving a portrait output, and reposition widgets that are too close to the sides.
- The screen share looks smaller after rotating: Stop changing orientation mid-stream. Set the phone to the intended orientation before starting screen capture, then keep it there.
- YouTube does not show the stream in the Shorts feed: Portrait orientation alone does not guarantee Shorts-feed detection for third-party streams. Verify the current YouTube workflow and the live preview.
- Viewers report poor or unstable video: Review bitrate, resolution, and frame rate in Streaming Settings against the phone’s capabilities and connection. The appropriate values depend on those conditions; the mobile guide does not establish one universal setting.
- Audio, camera, or destination options are missing: Recheck permissions and the options available for your operating system and installed app version.
