You can stream a sequence of local video files from a Linode server to YouTube Live with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. Create a text manifest, make sure its files have compatible streams, then send FFmpeg’s output to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. A YouTube playlist URL is not a concat manifest: this method does not fetch or resolve videos from YouTube.
What this method does—and does not do
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and processes them sequentially, “as if all their packets had been muxed together,” according to the FFmpeg Formats Documentation. The files must already be available on the server, and you must have the rights needed to rebroadcast them.
This is a file-based live stream, not a way to turn a YouTube playlist link into downloadable inputs. If you mean a playlist hosted on YouTube, the concat demuxer does not extract its videos or bypass access restrictions. For a YouTube Live stream, you also need a live event or stream configured in YouTube Studio and its current ingest details.
Prepare compatible media and a concat manifest
Place the files on the Linode server
Store the authorized media in a stable directory, such as /srv/media, and check that each path in the manifest exists and is readable by the account running FFmpeg. The concat demuxer works best when inputs have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. It does not normalize different files into a common format.

Create the manifest
Make a UTF-8 or ASCII-compatible text file with the documented header and one file directive per input. For example, save this as /srv/media/playlist.ffconcat:

file '/srv/media/part-02.mp4'Use paths that match the server exactly. Escape spaces and special characters according to FFmpeg’s concat-script syntax; incorrect quoting or paths can prevent the list from loading. The manifest order is the playback order.

Check stream compatibility and durations
Inspect the inputs before relying on a long stream. Differences in video or audio streams, codecs, time bases, or timestamps may cause errors, gaps, jumps, missing audio, or synchronization problems. The concat demuxer uses file durations to place the next input, so inaccurate duration information can create timestamp artifacts. If the files are not compatible, use a filter-based concat and transcode workflow to normalize them instead; a simple demuxer manifest will not do that work for you.
Get the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream or event you intend to use.
- Copy the current server/ingest URL and stream key shown there. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when your FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS; use the endpoint and key displayed for your stream rather than relying on an old URL.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a tutorial, screenshot, source repository, public logs, or shell history. Use a protected configuration or credential mechanism and restrict its file permissions.
YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. If Live Control Room does not let you start, check the account’s current live-streaming eligibility and access in YouTube Studio.

Run FFmpeg on Linode
Choose copy or transcode
If the inputs are compatible with YouTube’s accepted formats and with one another, stream copying can reduce CPU use because FFmpeg does not decode and re-encode the media. If you need to change codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or normalize mismatched inputs, transcode instead. Transcoding consumes more CPU, and the necessary Linode capacity depends on the media and workload; there is no single instance size that fits every resolution and frame rate.
Illustrative transcode command
This is an example command shape, not a universal profile or performance guarantee. Replace the ingest placeholder with the current URL and key from Live Control Room using a protected method; do not paste a real key into a published command. Check option support and ordering against the FFmpeg version installed on your server.

Select codecs, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current live encoder settings and your server’s capacity. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and constant bitrate. For a frame rate of 30 fps, for example, a two-second GOP is typically 60 frames; choose the corresponding frame count for your actual output frame rate.
The command uses -re to read file input at its native rate, -f concat to select the demuxer, and -safe 0 to allow the absolute paths shown in the example manifest. Keep that setting limited to a manifest and paths you control. The -f flv output muxer is used for RTMP-family live ingest. YouTube’s accepted codecs, recommended bitrate ranges, and ingest options can change, so follow the current settings page rather than treating this sample as fixed.

Confirm build support and start safely
Check that the installed FFmpeg build includes the encoders and network protocols your command needs, especially libx264 and RTMPS support if you use them. If you choose stream copy, replace the encoding options with appropriate copy options only after confirming the files are compatible and acceptable to YouTube. Run a short preflight stream, confirm it appears in Live Control Room’s preview, and verify picture, sound, and stream health before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
Plan Linode capacity and network headroom
The server must read the media, run the selected FFmpeg workload, and sustain outbound traffic to YouTube’s chosen ingest endpoint. Copying compatible streams has different CPU demands from decoding and transcoding; measure the actual process rather than guessing from a generic instance recommendation. If multiple outputs run at once, account for the sum of their bitrates.
- Check CPU use during a representative test at the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Verify the server’s outbound throughput can sustain the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and advises testing and monitoring stream health; this is guidance, not a guarantee of service.
- Allow outbound connectivity to the endpoint and port shown by YouTube. Do not assume one port is universal; keep firewall rules limited to what the selected endpoint and your server require.
- Confirm FFmpeg reconnect behavior and YouTube’s event state before leaving a long-running process unattended. Monitor the preview and health indicators rather than assuming that a running process means a healthy broadcast.
Troubleshoot common failures
