To stream a video stored on your computer to YouTube Live, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with your stream key, then start streaming and check the Live Control Room preview. Use Media Source for one file; use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist.
Before you start
- Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The person streaming must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility rules.
- Prepare your video files. Keep them accessible on the computer running OBS. OBS documents support for common containers including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, but a supported container does not guarantee every file’s codec will play correctly. See OBS Media Sources.
- Have a stable upload connection. Your upload capacity must support the video and audio bitrate you select, with room for other network use.
- Confirm your rights. Having a local copy does not by itself give you permission to livestream its video or audio. You are responsible for complying with YouTube policies and rights restrictions; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
Create or select the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a new encoder stream or select a scheduled stream. YouTube’s walkthrough is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. The key is a credential: do not share it or show it in a recording. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube stream settings.
- Leave the Live Control Room open so you can check the incoming preview and stream health after OBS connects.
Add local video to OBS
For one video file
- In OBS, select the scene you want to use. In the Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source.
- Create a source, or select an existing one, then browse to the video file on your computer.
- Enable Loop if you want the file to restart automatically when playback reaches the end. Leave it off if the stream should stop playing that file instead.
- Check the OBS preview. Resize or reposition the source if needed so the image fits the scene as intended. OBS scenes are built from sources; see the OBS Sources Guide.
For a playlist of files
- Install VLC before opening the playlist source. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; match the VLC and OBS architectures—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- In the Sources dock, click + and select VLC Video. Add the files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Choose whether to shuffle. Leave Loop Playlist on if you want the sequence to repeat.
- Check the OBS preview and audio mixer before streaming. The VLC playlist controls and Media Source are documented in OBS Media Sources.
Check the picture and audio
Before connecting to YouTube, confirm that the video is visible in the OBS preview and that its audio registers in the mixer. Make sure the scene does not also send an unwanted microphone or desktop-audio source. If the file is silent, inspect the selected source and mixer state rather than assuming the video itself contains audible audio.
Set the output resolution and frame rate to suit the source and your connection. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution file just to select a larger output size: it cannot restore detail that is not in the original. For a prerecorded stream without audience interaction, low-latency delivery is usually less important than a reliable feed; YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Review the available options in YouTube’s stream settings.
Connect OBS and choose encoder settings
- Open OBS settings and select the YouTube streaming service or preset if it is available. Otherwise, enter YouTube’s server URL and the stream key you copied from Live Control Room.
- Choose a video codec your encoder supports. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery; see its RTMPS guidance.
- Set rate control to CBR and use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Select a bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s current encoder table lists these H.264 examples:
- 720p30: 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended.
- 1080p30: 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended.
- 1080p60: 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended.
These are YouTube’s technical recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or network can sustain the settings. Check the current encoder settings and bitrate table.
- Keep total stream bitrate within your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom; other people and devices using the connection can reduce what is available to OBS. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Test, go live and end the stream
- For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder stream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Run a test with movement and audio similar to what you plan to stream.
- In OBS, click Start Streaming. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview; check stream health and listen for audio before making the event public.
- When the preview is ready, use Go live in Live Control Room if the scheduled event requires it. Follow the Studio flow to end the event, then stop sending from OBS. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guide.
YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. DVR lets viewers pause or rewind, but it is limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; see YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Confirm OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube service or server URL and that the matching stream key is entered. Check that the event is the one selected in Live Control Room.
- The OBS preview is blank: Check that the Media Source points to a file that still exists at that location, then check the format and codec. A listed container format alone does not ensure compatibility.
- The stream has no audio: Check that the file has an audio track, the media source is not muted, and the source registers in the OBS mixer. Also check that an unintended audio source is not confusing the mix.
- Playback stops at the end: For one file, enable Loop in Media Source. For a playlist, enable Loop Playlist in VLC Video.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS, then reopen OBS.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Reduce the output bitrate or resolution, check whether another device is using the connection, and test again with upload headroom. YouTube advises keeping stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth.
- The stream key may be exposed: Reset it in YouTube Live Control Room before streaming again.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS runs on your computer, so your PC and connection need to stay available for the stream. If you want uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
