Use a mixer or audio interface only if you need more physical inputs or independent hands-on control; YouTube’s web interface is not a general-purpose mixer for local audio devices. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers external audio hardware and advanced productions.
Choose how to combine the sources
First list everything viewers should hear: for example, your microphone, game or desktop audio, playback audio you have rights to use, or a remote guest returned by a conferencing app. These may be separate physical devices or software audio feeds. Whether they can be routed separately depends on your encoder, operating system, and audio hardware.
Use the encoder for a simple mix
For one microphone plus computer or game audio, start with the encoder and equipment you already have, if it can capture both sources. Select or route the inputs using that encoder’s supported controls. Exact names and availability vary, so check the current documentation for your encoder and operating system rather than assuming every app has a control called “desktop audio.”
Add a mixer or interface when it solves an input problem
A mixer can be useful when you have multiple microphones or want direct, independent level and mute controls. YouTube lists mixers, multiple microphones, and external audio hardware as examples for advanced encoder setups, but does not require a mixer for every stream or endorse a particular model. Check that the devices’ connections and outputs match what your computer and encoder can accept.

Compare options by the number and type of inputs you need, whether each source needs its own live control, connection compatibility, monitoring, and setup complexity. Begin with existing equipment and add hardware only to address a real limitation; YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not necessary to get started.
Connect and balance the audio before going live
- Connect or route each source. Plug physical sources into their intended inputs, or route software audio through controls supported by your computer and encoder.
- Select the intended inputs in the encoder. Confirm that the microphone, game or computer sound, and any other desired feeds are included. The controls and routing method depend on the encoder and operating system.
- Set relative levels. Make speech intelligible and ensure game sound or other feeds do not overpower it. There is no universal gain value for different microphones, rooms, and equipment.
- Listen to a test recording or preview. Check for missing, muted, distorted, or unbalanced sources before the public broadcast. Wear headphones if practical so you can hear the combined result.
Preview, monitor, and protect the stream
Check the Live Control Room preview
Before starting the public stream, verify in the YouTube Live Control Room preview that the intended audio is present. Continue monitoring audio and video quality during the event so you can catch a disconnected device, mute, or level change.

Leave upload-bandwidth headroom
YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% room between your total stream bitrate and available upload bandwidth: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Treat this as a recommendation, not a guarantee against interruptions.
Keep the stream key private
Your encoder uses the stream key to send the feed to YouTube. Do not share it publicly. If it is compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room and replace the key in the encoder. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

Use HLS audio settings only for an HLS stream
Do not apply HLS-specific audio settings to every YouTube broadcast. For HLS ingestion, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround, and lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as supported audio codecs. Follow the current HLS preset and settings for your encoder; YouTube names OBS among encoders that support HLS output. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
Several independent sources mixed into a stereo feed are not the same as delivering surround sound. For 5.1, YouTube supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 channel layouts; other configurations may convert unreliably to stereo. See YouTube’s 5.1 surround guidance.

Troubleshoot common audio problems
- A source is missing: Check its physical connection or software routing, then confirm the encoder is capturing the intended input.
- Speech is hard to hear: Rebalance the microphone against game and other audio, and listen to the combined preview rather than judging levels from the encoder meters alone.
- Audio is distorted: Lower the affected source’s level and check the signal path for clipping or an incorrect input connection.
- The stream becomes unstable: Compare total stream bitrate with available upload bandwidth and leave the headroom YouTube recommends.
- The encoder no longer connects: If the stream key was reset or exposed, update the encoder with the current key from Live Control Room.
- Surround audio converts unexpectedly: Check that the channel layout is mono, stereo, or 5.1 as supported; do not treat separate source mixing as a surround-layout setting.
