FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can feed compatible podcast episode files to YouTube Live in sequence without re-encoding them. The important caveats: the files must have matching stream layouts and timing, episode transitions are not guaranteed to be gapless, and the exact command for looping a concat playlist indefinitely depends on FFmpeg’s version and must be tested. This guide covers the verified setup and flags that need a local test before you rely on it.
What you need before starting
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain on and connected to the internet for the duration of the broadcast.
- Podcast episode files prepared in the order you want them to play.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
Decide separately how you will preserve the program. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; do not rely on automatic archiving for a longer continuous stream. Keep your own recording or arrange another archive if the episodes need to remain available.
Check whether the episodes can be concatenated without re-encoding
The concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and presents their packets in sequence. It can avoid re-encoding, but only when the files are compatible. FFmpeg’s documentation requires the same streams, codecs and time bases across the inputs. Matching file extensions or filenames alone do not establish compatibility.
Inspect the inputs first
Use FFmpeg’s probing tools or another media inspector to compare each episode’s stream layout, codecs and time bases. Confirm whether all episodes have the same audio and video streams, if any. Check reported durations too: inaccurate duration metadata can shift timestamps for later files and cause artifacts.

Choose stream copy or normalization
- Use concat demuxing with stream copy only when the episode streams are compatible and their timing information is trustworthy. This avoids a generation-loss re-encode.
- Normalize first if stream layouts or encoding parameters differ. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. Convert the episodes to a consistent stream configuration, then test the resulting sequence.
The right choice depends on the actual files; podcast episodes are not automatically compatible just because they came from the same show.
Create the concat list
Make a plain-text file, for example episodes.ffconcat, with one file directive per episode in playback order. A basic list looks like this:

file 'episode-03.mp4'The ffconcat version 1.0 header is optional when you explicitly select the concat demuxer. If you include it so FFmpeg can recognize the format automatically, it must be the very first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters, and test the list with your actual filenames.
FFmpeg adjusts timestamps across the sequence. If input files have streams of unequal lengths, gaps may occur; duration mismatches can also cause artifacts. A correctly formatted list is not proof that transitions will be seamless.

Configure YouTube Live ingestion
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you plan to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder setup. Keep the key private and enter it only in the local encoder configuration.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest.
- Configure output for YouTube’s current requirements. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264 video, CBR bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Select resolution, frame rate and bitrate for your source and connection. There is no single bitrate that is right for every podcast stream; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate.
- Run a representative test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators before scheduling a longer broadcast.
First-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned start. For an exact, current settings table, see YouTube’s encoder settings for live streaming and its encoder setup instructions.
Looping the playlist requires a version-specific test
A concat list defines the order of files, but the sources used for this guide do not establish a single tested FFmpeg command or option placement that loops such a list indefinitely into YouTube. Do not assume that a command found for a different FFmpeg version or input type will behave the same way. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version, then verify loop-option behavior with a short test before using it for a real broadcast.

In particular, test the end of the final episode, the transition back to the first, audio at each boundary, and the stream’s behavior after running for a while. Use a private or unlisted test stream where appropriate. A playlist intended to run continuously is not a guarantee of gapless transitions, uninterrupted host connectivity or continuous YouTube service.

- Transport stream (TS) segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
- No byte ranges.
- A rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- HTTPS POST/PUT requests.
- No encryption other than HTTPS.
Unless your video format calls for HLS, it adds requirements without offering the lower-latency path of RTMP/RTMPS. See YouTube’s HLS ingest instructions for the current specification.
Keep a plan for archives and long runs
YouTube’s automatic archive applies to streams under 12 hours. For a broadcast that reaches or exceeds that duration, the reviewed YouTube instructions do not establish a reliable automatic archive. If you need a complete copy, record the program independently and check that the recording has enough storage and captures the output you intend to preserve.
A local FFmpeg broadcast also depends on the computer, FFmpeg process and internet connection staying available. You remain responsible for checking the stream and recovering from problems that the local setup does not handle. YouTube’s encoder directory describes cloud services for continuous prerecorded-video streaming, but evaluate any service’s format support, audio handling, scheduling controls, recovery, retention, pricing and terms before choosing it.
Troubleshooting common failures
FFmpeg rejects the concat list or cannot open a file
- Check that the list is plain text and that every path is correct relative to the working directory, or use an appropriate full path.
- Quote or escape spaces and special characters in paths.
- If relying on automatic format recognition, ensure the optional header is exactly the first line with no byte-order mark or extra spaces.
Playback has glitches, drift or a gap at an episode boundary
- Compare stream layouts, codecs and time bases; the concat demuxer requires matching streams.
- Check duration metadata and investigate streams with unequal lengths.
- If the inputs are not compatible, normalize them and use a re-encoding workflow based on the concat filter rather than assuming stream copy will work.
- Test the full sequence and boundaries before a public broadcast; the concat demuxer does not promise gapless transitions.
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Verify that live streaming is enabled and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Recheck the stream URL and key in Live Control Room, and make sure you selected the intended stream.
- Use RTMPS and the supported codec/audio combination for your ingest method. Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback and test upload capacity.
The stream drops during a long broadcast
- Check whether the local computer slept, the FFmpeg process exited, or the internet connection failed.
- Monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health during a test run; a concat playlist does not itself provide host or network recovery.
- For a long program, make a separate recording and verify it rather than relying on YouTube’s under-12-hour archive behavior.
