Keep shuffle off to play them in order, enable Loop Playlist only if you want the queue to repeat, and connect OBS to a stream created in YouTube Studio. The computer and internet connection must remain available while this local setup runs.
What you need before you start
- Podcast episode files that your computer can play and that you have the rights to broadcast.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the stream.
- A YouTube account with live streaming enabled. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.
- A reliable upload connection capable of sustaining the bitrate you select.
Decide whether the episodes should play once in a set order or repeat continuously. For an audio-led program, you can also add suitable artwork or a title card as a visual element in the OBS scene; this can help identify the show, but is not a substitute for checking the YouTube preview and stream health.
Build a playlist from the episode files in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; OBS specifies a compatible 64-bit VLC build when using 64-bit OBS.
- Open OBS, create or select a scene, then add a VLC Video source. OBS documents this source as supporting a playlist of items, unlike the single-file Media Source. If VLC Video is not available, check that VLC is installed in the compatible build.
- Add the episode files to the source playlist in the order you want them to play. Keep Shuffle off for a fixed sequence.
- Set Loop Playlist according to your plan: turn it on to repeat the queue after the last item, or off to play the listed items once.
- Make sure the scene includes the visual and audio elements you intend to broadcast. Preview playback in OBS and confirm that the episode sound is audible.
This is a playlist of added media items, not a folder watcher. If you add or remove episodes from the folder later, update the OBS playlist yourself and check the playback order.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and use the Stream tab to create or select a stream. If viewers need an advance watch page, schedule a stream through Manage.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Use YouTube’s encoder guidance to choose a supported protocol and codec combination, resolution, and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. Set the keyframe interval to the recommended 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Before the real broadcast, test with representative episode audio and the visual scene. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking stream health. Start streaming from OBS and inspect the incoming preview in YouTube Studio.
- For a scheduled broadcast, follow YouTube’s preview and Go live steps when ready. Confirm the intended episode is playing, audio is present, and stream-health indicators are clear.
If the first live stream is not enabled yet, allow up to 24 hours for activation, as stated in YouTube Help. Interface labels can change, so follow the current Studio prompts if they differ.

Choose settings and test the feed
There is no single bitrate that fits every resolution and connection. Use the values in YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the resolution you choose, then leave headroom in your upload capacity rather than setting OBS to consume all available bandwidth. A representative test should include both quiet speech and the loudest or busiest audio in the episodes, so you can catch clipping, missing sound, or playback problems before viewers rely on the stream.
Watch YouTube’s stream-health status while the encoder sends data. Its live streaming error guidance covers problems such as unsupported format, bitrate, and missing audio or video. Fix the indicated issue in OBS or the source media, then test again before starting the public broadcast.

Plan for replays and continuous playback
Looping the OBS playlist keeps the encoder playing the queue, but it does not make one broadcast a dependable unlimited replay archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For an archive that viewers can navigate episode by episode, use separate broadcasts or upload the episodes separately rather than relying on one indefinitely running live stream to create a complete set of individual VODs.
YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance warns that third-party content can cause a placeholder image to replace a live stream, and Content ID claims may be made after a stream if it is archived. Confirm that you control or have permission for the music, clips, artwork, and other material in every episode; prerecorded does not mean exempt from rights rules.

Local OBS or cloud streaming?
| Approach | What it does | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on your computer | Plays a locally assembled VLC playlist and sends it to YouTube. | You control the files and sequence, but the computer, source files, and internet connection need to stay available. YouTube describes OBS as a verified encoder with no encoder fee. |
| StreamNeo | #1 cloud option to try: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. | Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. | Other cloud services | YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists cloud services, including services described for continuous or 24/7 video. | The listing does not establish current prices, whether a service accepts your specific episode queue or folder workflow, reliability for this use, or partner terms. Verify those details directly. |
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your podcast recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded videos to YouTube only, at the quality you uploaded up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. Can I add new episodes to the playlist while the stream is running?
The documented OBS VLC Video workflow uses a manually populated playlist; it does not establish automatic folder monitoring. Update the playlist and verify changes rather than assuming new files will be picked up.

Will YouTube save a 24/7 stream as a replay?
Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube Help. A longer continuous broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete, easy-to-navigate archive of every episode.
Does the YouTube Live API require a special setup for a basic playlist stream?
No. The API documentation describes advanced broadcast-and-stream patterns, including concurrent broadcasts using a stream; they are not needed for a basic OBS playlist.
