How to Stream Pre-Recorded Videos in 4K 60fps on YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—YouTube Live accepts encoder feeds at 4K/2160p and up to 60 fps. To broadcast a recording, create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, enter its stream URL and key in an encoder, and play the video through it. For a successful 4K/60 broadcast, match the encoder’s resolution, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval to YouTube’s published settings, then test the full setup before going live.

What you need for a 4K/60 YouTube Live stream

  • A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide covers channel readiness.
  • An encoder that can play a local recording or playlist and output 3840×2160 at 60 fps using a codec, bitrate and protocol supported by YouTube. You can use software or a hardware encoder; verify the exact capabilities of any device or software version before relying on it.
  • A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the encoder’s output, plus time to rehearse under conditions similar to the actual broadcast.
  • A local copy of the video. YouTube archives 1440p and 2160p streams automatically, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. YouTube’s live-streaming archive guidance explains the limitation.

YouTube’s 4K/60 encoder settings

YouTube lists 4K/2160p at 60 fps as a supported live format and accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. The bitrate figures below are settings YouTube publishes, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or internet connection can maintain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Setting Recommended value or choice
Resolution and frame rate 3840×2160 at 60 fps
Codec and bitrate AV1 or H.265/HEVC: 10 Mbps minimum setting; 35 Mbps recommended setting
Codec and bitrate H.264: 14 Mbps minimum setting; 50 Mbps recommended setting
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
Protocol RTMPS recommended where supported
Baseline SDR colour Rec. 709, 8-bit
Latency Normal latency; YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K/2160p

For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Its SDR baseline is Rec. 709 with 8-bit depth. YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate; a custom stream key can be configured for manual resolution selection.

Set up and start the broadcast

  1. Confirm live access. In YouTube Studio, make sure the channel is verified and eligible to stream. If this is your first live broadcast, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live in the Live Control Room, then create a stream or select one you scheduled. Copy the stream URL and key shown there. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event, so keep it private.
  3. Prepare the video in your encoder. Load the prerecorded video or playlist and configure output for 3840×2160 at 60 fps. Choose a supported codec, then apply the matching YouTube bitrate setting from the table, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and RTMPS where supported. For an SDR broadcast, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit colour.
  4. Connect to YouTube. Enter the copied stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming destination settings. Start the encoder early enough for the Live Control Room to receive and preview the feed before the scheduled broadcast begins.
  5. Check upload capacity. YouTube advises running an upload speed test. Check actual throughput under realistic conditions; allow headroom beyond the video bitrate because network variation can interrupt delivery. A nominal internet-plan speed alone does not establish that the connection can sustain the stream.
  6. Rehearse and monitor. Test with representative audio and movement, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check stream-health messages before and during the event. Confirm the watch page and archive path as appropriate.
  7. Keep a local recording. Retain the source file or a separate local recording, particularly for a long broadcast, rather than depending only on YouTube’s archive.

Choosing an encoder for prerecorded video

Software encoder

A software encoder is a general-purpose option when you want to play a file or playlist and control the outgoing resolution, codec and bitrate. Confirm that your chosen software can sustain 4K/60 encoding while playing the recording on your computer; the published YouTube settings do not guarantee that a particular computer can do so.

Hardware encoder

A dedicated hardware encoder may suit a production setup, but capabilities vary by model. Before choosing one, verify support for 3840×2160 at 60 fps, the codec and bitrate you intend to use, RTMPS, and a workflow for playing the prerecorded video into the encoder.

Cloud streaming service

YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre as a cloud-based service for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos and describes Full HD and 4K at 30/60 fps. That is YouTube’s service listing, not independent testing; check the provider’s current specifications, availability, pricing and terms before choosing it. YouTube’s encoder guide lists its supported encoder options.

Troubleshooting a 4K/60 broadcast

YouTube does not show a 4K/60 preview

Check that the encoder is actually outputting 3840×2160 at 60 fps and that the stream is connected to the intended event. YouTube normally detects incoming resolution and frame rate, so verify the encoder output rather than assuming the planned settings are being sent.

The stream drops or reports health problems

Compare the encoder’s selected bitrate with the available upload capacity and check for network variation. Run an upload speed test, test under realistic conditions, and allow headroom above the video bitrate. Confirm that the encoder is using CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval, and use RTMPS where supported.

The feed will not connect

Check that the event is the intended one and that the encoder has the matching stream URL and key. Re-copy the key from YouTube Studio if needed, update the encoder’s destination settings, and keep the key private. Confirm that the channel can currently stream; first-time activation may still be pending.

A 4K stream cannot use low latency

This is a YouTube limitation for 4K/2160p: its low-latency option is unavailable, and the stream uses normal latency.

The archive is missing after a long broadcast

YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use the local source or recording as the backup archive.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Before broadcasting a recording, make sure you have the rights needed to use its video and audio on YouTube. A stream key and a successful encoder connection do not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and the rules that apply to your channel and content. Replaying a video as a live event does not by itself establish that the content complies with YouTube policies or monetization requirements; assess the material and your rights separately.
