How to Stream Prerecorded Lessons 24/7 on YouTube with FFmpeg

To loop a prerecorded lesson on YouTube Live, create a broadcast in YouTube Studio, copy its RTMPS server URL and private stream key, then run FFmpeg with real-time input pacing and -stream_loop -1. That repeats the file, but it does not keep a failed process or network connection alive: a reliable 24/7 stream also needs supervision, recovery planning, and a local archive if you need a complete replay.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions before scheduling.
  • A computer that can run FFmpeg continuously, plus an internet connection with enough stable upload capacity for the selected video settings.
  • A prerecorded lesson file with compatible audio and video streams, and the rights to use every element in it.
  • A private YouTube stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, public log, or support post.

Install FFmpeg for your operating system and check the installed build with ffmpeg -version. Commands and available options can vary by build, so confirm them against the FFmpeg documentation when troubleshooting.

Create the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Create or schedule a broadcast and select the encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast.
  3. Keep the key private. The RTMPS destination combines the server URL and key; use the exact values YouTube provides rather than guessing an ingest address.
  4. Start FFmpeg using the command below. For a scheduled broadcast, wait until YouTube shows the encoder preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room if prompted.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest and describes it as RTMP delivered through an SSL connection. Its current encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no farther apart than four seconds.

Run a looping FFmpeg stream

This example transcodes a local MP4 to H.264 video and AAC audio, paces it in real time, and loops the input indefinitely. Replace the placeholders with your file path and the complete RTMPS URL and key from YouTube; never put a real key in a public example.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lesson.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

What the important options do

  • -re reads the file at its natural playback rate instead of sending it as fast as the computer can process it.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac encode video and audio into common live-stream formats.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set video rate-control values. The 4500k example is illustrative, not a universal recommendation.
  • -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 set a 60-frame keyframe interval. At 30 fps that is two seconds; if the output frame rate differs, adjust the interval so keyframes are about two seconds apart and never more than four seconds apart.
  • -f flv selects the container format used for this RTMP-family output.

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate using YouTube’s current settings table for the selected codec and your source. Ensure your sustained upload capacity has headroom above the configured stream rate. If the source codecs, timestamps, and container are suitable, stream copying with -c copy may reduce CPU use; transcoding is usually more adaptable when they are not. Test the entire file loop before relying on it in production.

Keep the stream running and recover from failures

A looping input only handles the end of the media file. It does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore a dropped internet connection, or guarantee that YouTube reconnects without a visible gap. Keep the computer awake, prevent automatic shutdown, and supervise the process with a service manager or a carefully tested wrapper that can restart it after failure.

FFmpeg documents reconnect options for certain protocols, but they are protocol-specific and do not promise that YouTube resumes at the same point or that viewers avoid an interruption. Check the protocol documentation for the protocol and installed FFmpeg version before adding reconnect flags. Test recovery by deliberately stopping the process and briefly interrupting the network, then check both FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube’s stream status.

Plan for replays, copyright, and monetization

Do not rely on a 24-hour broadcast for a complete archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If viewers need a replay, record locally as a backup or divide the programming into shorter broadcasts, then verify where each broadcast begins and ends in the archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Check rights and originality before going live

You must own or have permission to use the lesson footage, music, graphics, and other material. YouTube’s monetization policy, clarified on July 15, 2025 to call “repetitious content” “inauthentic content,” says repetitive or mass-produced content with little educational value may not qualify for monetization. That does not mean every loop of a creator’s own lesson is prohibited, but a continuous repeat is not a monetization shortcut or a guarantee of eligibility. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and current rights requirements.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube shows no incoming signal Incorrect server URL or key, broadcast not ready, or FFmpeg failed to start. Copy the exact URL and key from the intended Live Control Room broadcast, inspect FFmpeg’s error output, and confirm that the scheduled broadcast is using the encoder workflow.
The stream starts, then buffers or disconnects Unstable upload, insufficient capacity, or the FFmpeg process exited. Check sustained upload capacity against the selected bitrate, review FFmpeg logs, and test the process and network separately. Add supervision and test restart behavior.
Video or audio is missing, corrupt, or out of sync The input has unexpected streams, timestamps, codecs, or a variable frame rate. Inspect the file’s streams, test a complete loop, and transcode rather than stream-copying when the source is incompatible. Recheck the resulting preview in YouTube.
Keyframes or bitrate do not meet encoder guidance The example values were used without accounting for the actual output frame rate, resolution, or codec. Set constant bitrate and use YouTube’s table for the chosen codec and resolution; make the keyframe interval about two seconds and no longer than four seconds.
No complete replay appears after a day-long stream YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Use a local recording or split the schedule into shorter broadcasts if an archive is important.

Cost and workload choices

A local FFmpeg setup requires an available computer, power, and reliable internet for as long as the broadcast runs; you also maintain process supervision, recovery, and any local recording. A cloud-based workflow moves the always-on work off your home computer, but compare its workflow, monitoring, recovery behavior, credential handling, and current cost before choosing a provider.
