Drive stores the video; the encoder sends the live feed using your YouTube stream URL and key. YouTube’s official guidance does not describe a native Drive-to-Live button.
Before you start
- Confirm YouTube Live access. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, and YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. Enable access well before the event. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements
- Check the video and its rights. You need permission to broadcast the video and all included audio, including music. Being able to view or download a file in Drive does not by itself give you rebroadcast rights. Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable terms.
- Prepare local storage and a stable connection. A downloaded or mirrored video uses local disk space. Your internet upload connection must sustain the encoder’s outgoing stream while the computer accesses the file.
Make the Google Drive video available to the encoder
YouTube Live Control Room is not a substitute for an encoder that plays a Drive file. The encoder needs access to the video as a source, so arrange local access before the broadcast.
| Access method | How it works | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Download a copy | In Google Drive on the web, select the video and choose Download. | A simple, predictable local encoder source. | Requires enough disk space. The owner may disable downloading. |
| Drive for desktop: stream | Files are primarily stored in the cloud and cached locally. Make the specific video available offline before the event. | Using Drive files without mirroring all of My Drive. | Confirm offline availability in advance; playback may otherwise depend on Drive access and connectivity. |
| Drive for desktop: mirror | Files are stored both on the computer and in Drive. | A local copy for dependable playback or substantial video work. | Uses local disk space. |
Google Drive’s own player supports playback up to 1920 × 1080, and its playback quality can depend on internet quality and speed. That describes Drive’s preview player; it does not establish a resolution cap for a downloaded original played by a separate encoder. Google Drive video playback · Use Drive for desktop
If you use Drive for desktop’s streaming mode, check that the video is actually available offline before relying on it. A local download is a straightforward fallback when the file owner permits it. Owners can disable download, print and copy for viewers or commenters. Google Drive sharing settings

Create the YouTube Live event and get the encoder details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a stream, or use Manage → Schedule stream to schedule one. Set the title, privacy and event details for the intended audience.
- Locate the stream URL and stream key for the event. The encoder uses these to send its feed to YouTube. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Keep the event open in Live Control Room so you can check its preview and stream health after the encoder connects.
YouTube describes the roles this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” Its guidance covers encoder connections, not the file-selection menus of every encoder, so the exact control for choosing a video depends on the software or hardware you use. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder · Manage live stream settings
Configure the encoder and start the stream
- Open your encoder and set its input or media source to the locally available video file. Confirm that the video’s audio is included and audible.
- Enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming or destination settings. Use the key for the correct event.
- Choose an output resolution and frame rate that suit the video and your upload connection. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but your encoder still needs to send a stable feed.
- Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 as a supported video codec, recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds).
- Set a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and frame rate, using YouTube’s current recommendations as a guide. The bitrate must be sustainable on your actual upload connection; a recommended value does not guarantee reliability.
- Start the encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event for viewers. Confirm the correct picture and sound, event visibility and stream health.
Leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, as YouTube recommends. Shared network use, computer load, Drive access, encoder choice and the source’s audio and video all affect reliability. Test the complete moving video with sound—not only a static preview—and keep monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube stream settings and bitrate guidance · YouTube live-streaming tips

Test, monitor and end the broadcast
- Run a test before the scheduled broadcast. Check that playback does not pause when the encoder reads the file, that audio stays in sync and that the outgoing connection remains stable.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before and during the event. Verify the audience can access the event under the privacy setting you chose.
- When the event is over, stop sending content from the encoder deliberately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the Live tab in Studio for the archive.
YouTube’s encoder instructions
Troubleshooting common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video cannot be selected or opened | The file is only online in Drive, or its owner disabled downloads. | Download it if permitted, or use Drive for desktop and make the specific file available offline. Check access before the event. |
| Playback pauses or stalls | The encoder depends on a cloud file that is not cached locally, or the computer/network is under load. | Use an offline-available or downloaded copy; test the full file and reduce competing network or computer activity. |
| YouTube does not receive a feed | The encoder has the wrong stream URL or key, or the channel is not enabled for live streaming. | Check the event’s encoder details and channel eligibility. If enabling live for the first time, allow up to 24 hours. |
| Stream health warns of instability | The bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity, or bandwidth is being shared. | Test outbound upload, lower the encoder bitrate or output settings if needed, leave roughly 20% headroom, and monitor again. |
| Viewers cannot hear the video | The encoder source or output does not include the file’s audio. | Check audio routing and levels in the encoder, then verify sound in the Live Control Room preview. |
| The event or archive is unavailable | The event privacy/access settings may not match the audience, or the stream ran 12 hours or longer. | Review the event settings. YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer stream will be archived. |
