You can stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Intel NUC by playing the file into encoder software, connecting that software to a YouTube Live Control Room event with its stream URL and key, and starting the live feed. First confirm that your channel is eligible and check the exact NUC model: “Intel NUC” covers different hardware, so supported codecs, resolution, frame rate, and encoding performance vary by model.
What the NUC does in this setup
YouTube Live receives a live encoder feed; uploading a file as a regular YouTube video does not make it a live stream. The NUC must play the prerecorded file while encoder software sends the resulting audio and video to YouTube. Your source file, chosen live output, software, and exact NUC model all affect what settings are appropriate.
This workflow is suitable for a manually started event. If you need unattended scheduled playback, check that your playback software can schedule and start the media as required; YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not provide a universal NUC setup for unattended playback.
Check channel eligibility and the NUC model
Confirm that the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its general eligibility page also says streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation of live streaming can take up to 24 hours, so enable and verify access well before the event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Look up the exact NUC specifications
Find the NUC’s product code and consult the technical specification for that exact model. Intel documents Quick Sync and hardware video encoding for particular NUC families, but that does not establish the same capabilities across every NUC. The encoder software must also support the available hardware encoding path. Start with Intel’s guidance for identifying NUC specifications and the matching Intel NUC technical product specifications.
Do not assume a resolution or frame rate from the NUC name alone. Check the processor and graphics capabilities, the file’s format, and the encoder options available in your software before selecting an output.

Prepare the prerecorded video and encoder
Choose a playback workflow
Use streaming software that can play the video file as a source and send it as a live encoder feed. OBS is one possible software route, but menu labels and media playback controls depend on the installed version. Confirm the current version’s media-source and looping controls in its documentation rather than assuming a particular setting path.
- Test playback from the beginning and check whether the video ends, loops, or needs to be restarted, according to your event plan.
- Listen for audio and watch for sync problems while the NUC is decoding the source and encoding the live output at the same time.
- Use only video and audio you have the rights to broadcast. A live presentation does not exempt the stream from copyright rules.
Select the ingest protocol and output
YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. HLS may be appropriate for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, but it has higher latency and additional encoder configuration requirements. For ordinary SDR prerecorded playback, use RTMPS unless your source, encoder, and delivery requirements give you a reason to configure HLS. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and ingest guidance and YouTube’s guidance on RTMP and HLS ingest.

Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to values supported by both your source and the exact NUC/encoder combination. There is no universal NUC setting that can be recommended without the model and source details.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live. Create a stream or choose the Manage tab to schedule one. Scheduling creates an event page viewers can share and lets them set reminders.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder software. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to the event.
- Start the prerecorded file in the encoder workflow and verify that YouTube’s Live Control Room preview shows the expected picture and sound.
- When the preview and event details are ready, start the event from YouTube Studio as prompted by the workflow.
For the current Studio controls, see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Test upload capacity and run the event
Leave upload headroom
Your outgoing bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. For example, if you configure a 6 Mbps stream, plan for at least 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity; that is the 20% margin applied to this example, not a guarantee of a stable connection. Check the connection at the location and time you plan to stream, and avoid relying on a speed test taken under different network conditions. See YouTube’s bitrate and network recommendations.
Start early and monitor continuously
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. Use that time to confirm the preview, audio, video, and stream status. Continue monitoring audio and picture quality while live, and stop the encoder after ending the event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that statement as a promise that longer streams will be archived. See YouTube’s encoder setup and event preparation guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live event | The channel is not verified, has a live-streaming restriction, or first-time activation is still processing. | Check the channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| The Live Control Room does not receive a feed | The encoder may have the wrong stream URL or key, or may not be sending a compatible feed. | Copy the URL and key again from the correct event, confirm the encoder connection settings, and check the software’s output status. |
| The connection drops or the stream buffers | Available upload bandwidth may be insufficient or unstable for the configured bitrate. | Check upload capacity during the planned event conditions, reduce output bitrate if needed, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| The NUC struggles, or the output settings are unavailable | The selected codec, resolution, frame rate, or encoder may exceed the exact NUC’s supported capabilities. | Check the model-specific Intel specifications and the encoder’s supported hardware options; lower the output settings if necessary. |
| Picture and sound are out of sync | Playback and encoding may not be keeping pace together. | Test the full source on the NUC before the event, check sync throughout playback, and simplify the output settings if the machine cannot sustain them. |
| The video stops before the event ends | The file reached its end and playback was not configured to continue. | Test the file’s end behavior and configure supported looping or restart playback manually, as your event requires. |
Alternatives when the NUC is not the right fit
If you already own a suitable NUC, encoder software may be enough for a manually managed event. If you need scheduled prerecorded playback without a computer, YouTube’s encoder list includes the AJA HELO Plus, which supports PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. It is a separate hardware option, not a required NUC accessory; compare its scheduling, format support, monitoring needs, recovery behavior, and total cost with the setup you already have. YouTube lists it in its live encoder directory.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without leaving the NUC on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The same slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Nothing has to stay on at home. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
