Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo stream a prerecorded video from an Indian Linux VPS to YouTube Live, install FFmpeg, upload the video, copy the current RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then run FFmpeg with real-time input enabled. The server must sustain the video bitrate plus audio and network overhead; it also needs enough CPU if FFmpeg has to transcode the file.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU and sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen stream settings. Ask the provider about CPU allocation, traffic policy, and network capacity, and test the route you will actually use; an advertised network speed does not guarantee sustained streaming performance.
- A prerecorded video stored on the server at a stable path readable by the account running FFmpeg.
- An FFmpeg build with the encoders and RTMPS support required by your command. Package capabilities vary by distribution and build.
- A YouTube channel able to create or schedule a live stream in Live Control Room.
Install FFmpeg using trusted packages from your Linux distribution or an official project build appropriate for the operating system. The ffprobe utility is distributed with FFmpeg and can show the file’s codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio streams before you choose whether to copy or transcode it.
Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Open the stream settings and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key. YouTube Help says the RTMPS URL is revealed from the lock icon beside the Stream URL. Use the full, current URL shown there rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS transport; its ingestion guide specifies an RTMPS endpoint, application path, and port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the stream. Do not put a real key in an article, screenshot, repository, or shell history. For unattended deployments, use a secret manager or protected environment injection and restrict access to process and environment data on the server.
Choose encoding settings for the file and VPS
For a straightforward setup, use H.264 video and AAC audio. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, with CBR recommended; H.264 plus AAC is a conventional path for this walkthrough. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum, and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the target resolution, frame rate, and codec.
| H.264 output mode | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | Video bitrate only; audio and transport overhead add to the required outbound capacity. |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | Video bitrate only; audio and transport overhead add to the required outbound capacity. |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not measurements of what a particular VPS can sustain. Choose a quality that the server’s actual uplink can maintain. Transcoding uses CPU; software H.264 encoding can become CPU-bound at higher resolutions or frame rates. If the source is already compatible, stream-copying may reduce CPU load, but the file still has to meet YouTube’s codec, frame-rate, keyframe, and audio requirements.

Run FFmpeg at real-time speed
After uploading the media file, set the URL and input path. Replace the example URL with the complete RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, including your stream key; do not publish the real value.
STREAM_URL='rtmps://<host-from-live-control-room>:443/<application-path>/<stream-key>'
INPUT='/srv/media/video.mp4'
ffmpeg -re -i "$INPUT"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$STREAM_URL"
This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command or a guarantee for every source or FFmpeg build. It targets 1080p30 H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps video bitrate, with AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Adjust the video bitrate and output mode to suit the source and the VPS connection.

The -re input option makes FFmpeg read the file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), rather than sending it as quickly as storage and CPU permit. Put it before the input it governs. FFmpeg generally applies options to the next specified input or output, so option order matters; see the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds; recalculate the frame count if you change the frame rate. The bitrate controls provide a CBR-like starting point. Preserve the source aspect ratio; if you need to resize, use an intentional scale-and-pad filter rather than stretching the picture.

When stream copy may work
If the source already has compatible video and audio streams, you can try stream copy instead of encoding:
ffmpeg -re -i "$INPUT" -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "$STREAM_URL"
Copying avoids re-encoding, but it does not fix an incompatible codec, pixel format, frame rate, keyframe interval, or audio stream. Inspect the file first with ffprobe, then check YouTube’s ingest status during a test. If the input has unusual or multiple streams, explicit mapping such as -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? can make the selected video and optional audio streams unambiguous.

Test the stream and keep it running
- Run FFmpeg in a terminal and confirm that YouTube receives a stable signal.
- Before a public event, test a short segment with movement and audio. Check picture, sound, resolution, frame rate, and stream health in Live Control Room; review any error messages. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring stream health.
- For unattended operation, run FFmpeg under a service supervisor such as systemd, or a terminal/session manager. Check logs, file availability, and restart behavior. A service unit and restart policy depend on whether the stream is scheduled, finite, or intended to run continuously; one configuration does not fit every case.
A single prerecorded file ends when FFmpeg reaches the end of it. Repeating a file indefinitely is a separate requirement: verify loop syntax and behavior against the manual for the FFmpeg build installed on your VPS before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| SSL or certificate error | Wrong protocol, endpoint, port, or TLS handling. | Confirm the current URL comes from Live Control Room, uses rtmps, and includes port 443. YouTube lists an incorrect URL or RTMPS configuration among common causes. |
| Connection timeout | The VPS cannot reach the endpoint, the URL or key is incorrect, or the provider restricts outbound traffic. | Verify the complete URL and key, outbound access to the RTMPS endpoint on port 443, and the host’s traffic restrictions. YouTube’s RTMPS help recommends checking the URL and RTMPS support. |
| The file plays too quickly or timing is wrong | Real-time input pacing is missing or applied to the wrong input. | Place -re before the file input it should govern. |
| Dropped frames or unstable ingest | The sustained uplink cannot keep up with video bitrate plus audio and overhead. | Measure the route’s sustained capacity and reduce resolution or bitrate if needed. Test the chosen quality before relying on it; YouTube advises selecting a quality suitable for the available upload bitrate. |
| CPU saturation | Software encoding is too demanding for the allocated CPU. | If the source already complies with YouTube’s requirements, consider stream copy. Otherwise, lower resolution or frame rate, reduce encoding demands, or select a VPS with adequate CPU. No particular VPS plan is benchmarked here. |
| No audio or wrong stream selected | The file may lack audio, contain multiple streams, or be mapped differently than expected. | Inspect streams with ffprobe; if needed, map the intended streams with -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? and check the AAC settings. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a VPS, FFmpeg process, or home computer to keep the broadcast running, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream going with your computer off and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
