Test the complete stream privately before announcing it, and plan how someone will respond if the encoder, connection, power, or YouTube interrupts the broadcast.
1. Check that your channel can livestream
Before preparing a long-running broadcast, verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. YouTube requires channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and that the person livestreaming be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so set it up well before launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
Choose an encoder route based on how much local equipment and attention you can provide. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders and lists cloud services for continuous prerecorded streams. For a straightforward, low-cost do-it-yourself setup, OBS Studio is free, open-source streaming software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It does not provide music rights or guarantee unattended operation. A dedicated device such as the AJA HELO Plus is an optional hardware route; YouTube describes it as supporting direct YouTube streaming and scheduled prerecorded-media playback without a computer. These are alternatives, not prerequisites.
2. Confirm rights to the kirtan and visuals
Religious subject matter does not by itself make a recording free to rebroadcast. Before streaming, confirm that your permissions cover the specific composition, performance, sound recording, and any accompanying visuals—and the planned live transmission and archived replay, if you keep one. The rights situation depends on the material and the permission you have. The available platform guidance does not establish blanket India-specific clearance for Punjabi shabad kirtan, so do not assume a recording is exempt or cleared because it is devotional or publicly viewable.

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can lead to interruption or termination. If a rights holder has licensed third-party content for your channel, ask them to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist; YouTube says a licensed stream may still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
3. Prepare an OBS stream for prerecorded kirtan
This workflow assumes you are playing an authorized prerecorded program rather than transmitting a live performance. Make a scene with the permitted audio and a visual you have rights to use, such as an approved still image, lyrics, schedule, or channel branding. If you are capturing a live singer or commentary instead, that is a different production setup and requires its own audio and video capture arrangement.

- Install OBS Studio. Download it from the OBS Project. Add your authorized media and visual sources to a scene, then check that the audio is audible and the image is legible at the intended output resolution.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, choose to create or schedule a stream, and select the encoder workflow. Copy the server and stream details YouTube provides; treat the stream key as private, because anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Enter YouTube’s server and stream details in OBS using the current interface and settings shown for your stream. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Follow the current encoder setup guidance if the interface or workflow changes.
- Set output quality for your connection. Choose a resolution and frame rate suitable for the source and a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s current settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Those are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection in India can sustain them. Consult YouTube’s bitrate and encoder settings table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually choose, and leave upload headroom.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Stream the actual audio and visuals at the intended settings. Check levels, visual legibility, connection stability, and YouTube’s stream-health notices before making a public announcement. YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test before going live; see Going Live for Music Channels.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. When the test is satisfactory, use the Live Control Room to start the intended stream. For a continuous operation, arrange a person or documented procedure to check the dashboard and respond to a dropped encoder, network or power failure, content match, or platform interruption. YouTube’s encoder and stream-health guidance supports testing and monitoring; continuous availability is an operating goal, not a platform guarantee.
4. Keep a 24/7 stream operating
With a local encoder, continuous playback depends on the computer, OBS, source media, power, and internet connection all remaining available. Prevent the computer from sleeping, keep the media and scene ready, and establish who will notice and respond if the stream stops. A restart plan should cover checking YouTube’s Live Control Room, restoring the encoder connection, and reviewing any stream-health or copyright notice before resuming.
Cloud playout can remove the need to keep a home computer and connection running, but compare a service’s terms, control, recovery process, and availability in India before choosing it. Neither hardware nor cloud hosting by itself guarantees uninterrupted service. YouTube also lists encoder options for scheduled prerecorded playback and cloud services in its encoder guide.
