Plan the broadcast as sessions shorter than 12 hours if you need YouTube’s automatic replay, and keep a local recording: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Copyright clearance and monetization are separate issues, and neither is guaranteed by putting gameplay on a live channel.
Before you build the channel: check eligibility, rights, and replay needs
Enable live streaming ahead of time
You need a verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the time you intend to launch. The encoder workflow is the relevant YouTube method for gameplay and overlays; YouTube does not require a particular paid encoder.
Confirm that you have rights to everything in the recordings
YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. If it identifies material that remains in the stream, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube’s live-stream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights, including music rights.
- Check the publisher’s streaming policy for each game. Do not assume every game or soundtrack permits continuous rebroadcast.
- Check separately licensed music, artwork, overlays, and other third-party assets in your recordings. A license may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID; ask the owner about allowlisting where relevant.
- Do not treat a stream remaining online as proof that its contents are cleared.
Choose a replay plan before choosing a schedule
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete YouTube replay matters, divide the programming into bounded sessions shorter than 12 hours rather than relying on one uninterrupted day-long broadcast. This is a practical response to YouTube’s stated archive limit, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce a replay. Keep a local recording as a backup; YouTube recommends recording one locally.

Prepare the recorded playthroughs for a continuous rotation
Make a deliberate playlist
Arrange the recordings in the order viewers should see them, and decide what happens when the last item ends: start the rotation again, or stop the session and launch the next scheduled block. Use an encoder that can play the files sequentially and send the resulting feed to YouTube. Check that the chosen encoder supports your intended playback and reconnection workflow; YouTube’s encoder setup does not prescribe a specific application or guarantee playlist automation.
Check the full playback, not only the first minute
- Play each recording through to confirm that picture and game audio are present and that the file does not end unexpectedly.
- Check transitions between files, including whether a gap, black frame, desktop, or unintended audio is exposed.
- Confirm that the playlist order and repeat behavior match the schedule you plan to announce.
- Test local recording and confirm that the resulting file can be opened. If retaining source recordings and local backups is important, optional external storage can help; YouTube does not require or endorse a particular drive.
Use the encoder’s stream settings carefully
Configure the encoder to send the recorded video and audio to YouTube’s event. Match the output to the capabilities of your files, encoder, and connection, and check YouTube’s live preview and stream-health feedback before launch. The official guidance cited here does not establish one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for every recording and connection, so do not copy a universal preset without checking the current requirements for your chosen output. Keep the encoder running for the whole session and test what it does when a file ends or the connection drops.

Create the YouTube live event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule an event. Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details, then save or schedule it.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s destination or streaming settings so it sends the playlist to the right event. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Start the encoder feed and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Check that the expected recorded video and audio appear, and review stream health before you make the event live.
- Go live when the preview is correct. You can share the event’s watch-page URL with viewers. If you use YouTube’s auto-start or auto-stop options, test them with your encoder first; they can reduce manual steps, but should not be assumed to work correctly in an untested continuous setup.
- Monitor the session and verify the files afterward. Watch for encoder disconnects or playback failures. At the end of a session, check the local recording and the YouTube replay rather than assuming either was saved completely.
If the stream key is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement. A key grants the encoder access to send a feed to the channel, so protect it as a credential.
Design continuous programming around YouTube’s archive limit
A continuous channel does not have to mean one continuous YouTube event. For replay reliability, schedule separate sessions under 12 hours, stop the event between sessions, and begin the next event according to your programming plan. Keep a local recording of each session as a second copy. Even with shorter sessions, YouTube’s guidance is not a promise that every replay will be available, so the local copy matters if you need an archive.

For resilience, test what happens when the encoder or network disconnects: whether it resumes the same event, what viewers see during the interruption, and whether the playlist continues at the intended point. Do not assume YouTube’s event settings or an encoder will recover in a particular way without testing your setup.
Understand monetization before making this a 24/7 format
Monetization is not automatic just because a stream is live or consists of gameplay you recorded. YouTube applies its channel monetization policies to live streams. Its policy says monetized material should be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive, and should offer materially varied substance with creative, educational, or other value.

A channel built from creator-made playthroughs has a clearer editorial case when viewers can understand what distinguishes each session: for example, a different game, route, challenge, commentary, or intentional curation. These are ways to make the channel’s contribution and viewer value legible, not a formula for approval. YouTube reviews channel-level context, including its main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, share of watch time, metadata, and About section.
On July 15, 2025, YouTube said it was renaming “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is covered; it said the reused-content policy was unchanged. Reused-content and copyright rules are distinct: satisfying one does not settle the other. YouTube Partner Program eligibility and policy compliance are required for monetization features. YouTube lists advertising, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers among possible live-stream revenue features, with separate requirements for some features. No particular continuous-playthrough format or revenue is guaranteed to qualify.

Troubleshoot common failures
- You cannot start a live stream: check that the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and has completed first-time activation. Activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The Live Control Room preview is blank or wrong: verify that the encoder is using the intended event’s stream URL and key, then confirm the correct playlist and audio source are selected. Do not make the event live until the preview is right.
- The stream stops when a recording ends: check the encoder’s playlist and repeat behavior. A live event does not itself make a single file repeat; the encoder or playback workflow must supply the next item.
- The stream disconnects: inspect the encoder and connection, then test how your setup resumes. YouTube’s general setup instructions do not establish that every encoder will automatically recover or return to the right point in a playlist.
- A stream is interrupted despite having a music license: contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting for your channel. YouTube notes that a separately licensed asset can still trigger interruption if the owner has not allowlisted the channel.
- A long stream has no complete replay: YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions and a local recording when replay preservation is important.
