To play prerecorded videos in sequence on one ongoing YouTube Live destination, schedule the YouTube broadcast and send it a continuous feed from an encoder or cloud playout service. YouTube Studio supports scheduling encoder-based live events; its documented workflow does not establish a built-in service that automatically queues prerecorded videos into a continuous channel. If you want separate programs with their own start times and watch pages, schedule separate broadcasts instead.
Continuous channel or separate scheduled events?
These are different setups. A scheduled event is a YouTube broadcast with a start time and its own watch page. A continuous channel keeps one destination live while a playout system supplies the next prerecorded video. YouTube’s Live Streaming API likewise distinguishes the broadcast event from the audiovisual stream feeding it; its example of a 24/7 feed describes how resources can be bound, not a YouTube feature for scheduling video files into a playlist. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
| Question | Separate scheduled events | One continuous prerecorded channel |
|---|---|---|
| What appears on YouTube? | Each program is a scheduled broadcast with its own event and watch page. | One continuing destination receives a feed from an encoder or playout service. |
| Does YouTube’s documented workflow queue prerecorded files by schedule? | Not needed to schedule an event; an encoder sends its feed. | The official workflow reviewed does not establish a built-in video playlist scheduler. |
| What must be active? | An encoder must send the stream when the event is due. | An encoder or cloud playout service must keep supplying the feed. |
How to schedule an encoder-based YouTube Live event
- Create or schedule the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set the event details and visibility appropriate to your audience.
- Configure the encoder: Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or include it in examples. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder. YouTube Help: create a live stream with an encoder YouTube Help: stream settings
- Start the feed and check the preview: Start sending from the encoder, then confirm the incoming video and audio in Live Control Room before taking the event live.
- Go live: Use the scheduled broadcast controls in Live Control Room to start the event once the preview is ready.
- End the event cleanly: End the stream in YouTube’s controls and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that threshold as a promise that longer streams will be archived. YouTube Help: stream settings
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can affect when a stream starts or ends, but they are not a scheduler for choosing and playing a sequence of prerecorded files. YouTube Help: stream settings
What a continuous prerecorded channel needs
For a single live destination that automatically advances through prerecorded videos, arrange a playout system that sends a continuous audiovisual feed to YouTube. That could be an encoder workflow you operate or a cloud service. YouTube’s broadcast and stream resources provide the event-and-feed model, but do not themselves establish file queuing or playlist scheduling. Check any playout service for its YouTube output support, scheduling behavior, interruption recovery, rights controls, pricing and terms before relying on it.

Prepare the videos and schedule
- Choose videos you have the rights to stream and make a clear play order or schedule in the playout system.
- Check that each file has usable picture and sound, and test transitions between items before relying on the channel.
- Confirm that the playout system remains active for the hours you intend to broadcast and has a plan for a failed connection or stopped feed.
Connect the feed to YouTube
Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast in Live Control Room, then configure the playout encoder with the stream URL and key. Start the feed, verify the preview, and use YouTube’s broadcast controls to go live. For a continuous destination, verify the system’s behavior at program transitions and after a restart; scheduling an event alone does not make YouTube play the files.
Test and monitor before depending on the stream
- Set up the encoder stream in advance and verify the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- Check that viewers can reach the stream from the channel and watch pages, and monitor picture and audio while it runs.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work during an outage.
- Check that any local archive files are actually being written if you need a recording.
YouTube recommends monitoring the feed and testing backup arrangements. No setup should be described as guaranteed uninterrupted. For higher-production-value events, YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders; it does not name a required model or say that such an encoder schedules prerecorded files. Common problems and fixes
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and current key were entered correctly. If the key was reset, update the encoder before retrying.
- Preview works but the event is not live: Check the scheduled event controls in Live Control Room and explicitly start the broadcast when ready.
- Video stops between scheduled programs: Check whether the playout system is designed to maintain one continuous feed and whether its schedule has a gap. YouTube’s event scheduler does not fill that gap with prerecorded files.
- Feed drops or the encoder stops: Inspect the encoder or playout connection, restore the feed, and monitor the preview. A tested backup can help, but recovery is not guaranteed by YouTube’s scheduling workflow.
- Stream key may be exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room, then replace it wherever the encoder or playout service uses the old key.
- Archive is missing: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. The documentation does not establish that longer streams will be archived automatically.
