How to Stream to Facebook Live Using RTMPS

Copy your Facebook Live Producer credentials into OBS, select RTMPS and H.264, then tune bitrate and resolution to match your upload connection.

To stream to Facebook Live over RTMPS, copy the server URL and stream key shown for your broadcast in Facebook Live Producer, enter them in OBS or another compatible encoder, and start streaming. In OBS, Facebook Live’s maintained service profile uses an RTMPS endpoint and H.264 video; use the values currently shown in Live Producer if they differ.

What you need before you start

  • A Facebook account and access to Facebook Live Producer for the broadcast you want to create. The available controls and credentials may vary by account or session.
  • Encoder software that supports RTMPS, such as OBS Studio.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen video bitrate.

RTMPS sends the encoder’s video to Facebook using a server URL and stream key. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast.

Get the RTMPS server URL and stream key

  1. Open Facebook Live Producer and create a live video or select the broadcast you plan to use.
  2. Choose the option for streaming software or an encoder.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that broadcast. Keep the key private and do not share it in screenshots, chat, or public posts.

Facebook’s displayed values are the authority for your specific broadcast. OBS’s maintained Facebook Live configuration lists rtmps://rtmp-api.facebook.com:443/rtmp/ as its default server, but use the URL shown in Live Producer if it differs. Account-specific interface details and key-persistence options are not established here, so check the current screen rather than assuming a saved key will remain valid.

Configure OBS for Facebook Live

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
  2. For Service, select Facebook Live if it is available. If not, choose a custom service that supports RTMPS.
  3. Enter the server URL copied from Live Producer in the server field, and paste the stream key into the stream-key field. For a custom service, use the endpoint and key exactly as displayed by Facebook.
  4. Open Settings > Output and configure a video bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. Keep the codec compatible with the Facebook Live service profile; OBS lists H.264 for Facebook Live.
  5. Open Settings > Video and choose a resolution and frame rate suitable for your content and connection.
  6. Apply the settings, then click Start Streaming in OBS. Check the preview and connection status in Live Producer before publishing the broadcast to viewers.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

OBS’s maintained Facebook Live service configuration lists these limits and suggested combinations. They are OBS profile guidance, not a guarantee that Facebook will accept every setting for every account or broadcast.

Setting OBS Facebook Live profile guidance
Video codec H.264
Maximum frame rate 60 fps
Maximum video bitrate 9000 kbps
Maximum audio bitrate 128 kbps
1280 × 720 at 30 fps Up to 4000 kbps
1920 × 1080 at 30 fps Up to 6000 kbps

Start with a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain consistently, rather than choosing the highest listed maximum. Higher bitrate requires more upload capacity. If OBS shows dropped frames, lower the bitrate and retest; a steady stream at a lower setting is preferable to one that repeatedly loses frames.

Check the stream before publishing

  • Confirm Live Producer receives a preview from OBS.
  • Verify that the correct broadcast is selected and that the video and audio are behaving as expected.
  • Watch OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frames counter while the preview runs.
  • When the preview is stable and the broadcast details are correct, use Live Producer’s controls to publish or go live to viewers.

Troubleshoot common RTMPS problems

OBS will not connect

Check that the server URL and stream key were copied from the current broadcast and placed in the correct OBS fields. If you entered OBS’s default endpoint manually, compare it with the URL Live Producer currently displays and use the latter if they differ. The available guidance does not establish a complete Facebook error-code map, so avoid inferring a specific cause from an error message alone.

Dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator

OBS associates a rising dropped-frames counter and a yellow or red connection indicator with an unstable service connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check connection stability, then reduce the video bitrate in OBS and test again. If necessary, lower resolution or frame rate as well.

The encoder connects but Live Producer has no preview

Confirm that OBS is streaming to the same broadcast whose credentials you copied. Recheck the server URL and stream key for that event, then stop and restart the encoder after correcting them. Confirm status in Live Producer before publishing.

The displayed endpoint differs from OBS’s default

Use the current server URL shown in Facebook Live Producer for your broadcast. OBS’s endpoint is a useful default, not a reason to override the values Facebook provides for the active stream.

Copyright and broadcast content

Using RTMPS only transports your encoder’s output; it does not grant rights to the video, game footage, music, or other material in the broadcast. Before going live, make sure you have permission to use the content and review Facebook’s current rules for live broadcasts. Do not assume that content being available online makes it safe to rebroadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

This RTMPS workflow sends a live encoder feed to Facebook. StreamNeo is a separate service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos; it does not stream to Facebook or go live from a camera. If your goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than this Facebook broadcast, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

  • Nothing has to stay running on your computer or home connection.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
