To stream the same live show to several social platforms at once, prepare each destination account, then send your broadcast through either a multistream relay or separate encoder outputs. Confirm each platform’s live-streaming eligibility and current connection requirements, and test your upload connection with a realistic version of the show before going live.
What multistreaming means—and what you need
Multistreaming, also called simulstreaming, means publishing the same live content to multiple platforms at the same time. You need an account that can go live on every destination and a way to deliver the video to each one: either an encoder configured for multiple outputs or a relay service that receives one encoder feed and distributes it.
- Destination access: Check each account’s standing, live-streaming eligibility, and any requirements for stream keys or ingest URLs. A relay does not grant permission to go live on a platform.
- A broadcast setup: Choose direct multi-output from an encoder or a relay workflow. Each has different bandwidth and configuration implications.
- A tested upload connection: The connection must handle the stream reliably. YouTube says sufficient upload speed is critical for high-quality simulstreaming and recommends testing with typical audio and movement. YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms explains this requirement.
- Destination-appropriate presentation: Decide how the show will be framed and titled for each platform. A single landscape layout may not suit every audience or screen.
Choose how to send the stream
| Approach | How it works | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder with multiple outputs | Your computer sends a separate output to each platform. | Local outbound bandwidth and configuration can increase as destinations are added. There is no universal bitrate formula for every combination; check each platform’s current requirements and test your setup. |
| Cloud multistream relay | Your encoder sends one feed to a relay, which forwards it to the connected destinations. | This avoids sending a separate local output to every destination, but you must check the relay’s current platform support, account or plan restrictions, and setup instructions. |
For an OBS relay example, Restream documents connecting channels in its service and then configuring OBS to send the feed to Restream. Its interface and supported destinations can change, so follow its current OBS multistream guide when setting it up. Direct multi-output and relay workflows are different methods; neither guarantees that every destination will accept the same broadcast.
Prepare accounts and destinations
- Pick the platforms. Check each destination’s current live-streaming rules, account eligibility, and supported connection method. Do not assume one platform’s rules apply to another.
- Enable YouTube live streaming if YouTube is a destination. YouTube says the channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take at least 24 hours after you request it. See YouTube’s setup guidance.
- Connect each destination. Where required, obtain that platform’s ingest URL and stream key. Some encoders or relay services handle connection details for you. Treat keys as private credentials: do not publish or share them, and replace a key if it has been exposed.
- Set up the show for each audience. Enter suitable titles and configure framing for the destination. Restream recommends portrait presentation in its Instagram setup guide for mobile viewing; that is vendor guidance, not a universal Instagram mandate. Check the current guide for connection and ending instructions: Restream’s Instagram guide.
Run a test before the event
- Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test mode where the destination allows it.
- Include speech, music or other expected audio, and the kind of movement viewers will see during the real show.
- Check the encoder’s output and each platform’s preview or live status. Listen for missing or mismatched audio and look for dropped frames, freezes, or incorrect framing.
- Test with the number of destinations and the configuration you plan to use. A test to one platform alone may not reveal a problem that appears when multiple outputs are active.
- Confirm your connection has enough upload capacity under realistic conditions. YouTube specifically advises a realistic test that includes audio and typical movement; no single upload-speed target applies universally to every platform and stream configuration. See YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance.
Go live and monitor every destination
- Start the encoder or relay according to its current instructions.
- Verify that each destination reports the broadcast as live and that its video and audio are correct. Do not assume that a successful connection to one platform means all the others connected.
- Monitor the encoder and destination previews during the show for connection problems, dropped frames, freezes, or unexpected layout changes.
- Handle chat using each platform’s tools, or a combined-chat feature if your chosen service currently supports it. Check that feature directly rather than assuming it is included.
- End the broadcast using the destination- and service-specific procedure. Restream’s Instagram guide warns that ending only in the relay or software can leave the Instagram video frozen for four minutes; check its current instructions before your event.
Know which limits apply to which service
Platform limits are not interchangeable. YouTube’s Help page lists a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. These are YouTube limits, not general multistreaming rules; consult YouTube’s live-streaming setup information and the current rules for every other destination.

Also distinguish broadcasting one event to several platforms from running multiple separate events at the same time. Restream’s documentation says its Concurrent Events feature does not support Instagram, TikTok, or Twitch. That statement applies to that specific feature; it does not by itself establish whether a single simulcast to any of those services is possible. Check the current feature and destination list before relying on a particular combination: Restream’s Concurrent Events documentation.
Copyright, reused content, and platform rules
Multistreaming does not change the rights you need for the material in your broadcast. Check the rules and terms of every destination, particularly if the show contains copyrighted music, monetized material, or content subject to platform exclusivity. A stream key or relay connection is not permission to use a song, video, or other protected work, and it does not establish that a destination will approve or monetize the stream.

Troubleshoot common multistream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One destination is live, but another is not | That account may lack live eligibility, the destination may be disconnected, or its ingest details may be wrong. | Check that platform’s live access, connection status, ingest URL, and stream key. Reconnect through the encoder or relay’s current instructions. |
| Video stutters or drops frames across destinations | The local upload connection may not be sufficient for the configured outputs, or the connection may be unstable. | Test with typical audio and movement, check the encoder’s connection indicators, and reduce the demands of the setup or improve the connection before the event. YouTube identifies sufficient upload speed as critical for high-quality simulstreaming. |
| Audio is missing or not as expected | The audio source or output routing may not be reaching the stream correctly. | Include the expected audio in a test and listen to each destination’s preview, not only local monitoring. |
| Portrait-oriented destination shows an awkward crop | The show’s framing may not suit a mobile-oriented presentation. | Check the destination’s current guidance and preview the framing. Restream recommends portrait mode for Instagram in its setup guide, but this is not a universal platform requirement. |
| Instagram appears frozen after ending | The broadcast may have been ended only in the relay or software. | Follow the current destination-specific end procedure in Restream’s Instagram instructions. |
Or let it run in the cloud
