To stream prerecorded portrait videos continuously on YouTube, use FFmpeg to encode a portrait output and push it to the RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. A single clip can be looped with FFmpeg’s video loop filter; a playlist of different clips needs a separate ordered input/playlist workflow. The loop filter alone does not advance through multiple files.
The process is only continuous while the files, FFmpeg process, network connection and YouTube ingest stay healthy. The guide below covers both playback patterns, portrait framing, YouTube settings, testing and ways to monitor a long-running stream.
Choose the playback method: repeat one clip or advance through a playlist
First decide what “continuous” means for your channel. Repeating one video indefinitely and playing a changing queue of videos are different jobs. FFmpeg’s loop video filter repeats frames from an input; it does not schedule or rotate a collection of separate files.
Repeat one video
For one clip, FFmpeg’s documented loop filter accepts loop=-1 for infinite looping. This repeats video frames; it does not by itself guarantee seamless audio looping or remove a gap at the boundary. Check how the source audio is handled in your full filter and muxing workflow, and test the transition before making the stream public.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Advance through multiple videos
For a queue, maintain an ordered list of files and feed them into a continuous sequence before encoding and pushing to YouTube. The files should have compatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates and audio layouts. If they differ, normalize or re-encode them so transitions do not change the output format or disrupt timing. Test every boundary for black frames, silence, abrupt cuts or an output interruption.
The exact FFmpeg command depends on the operating system and shell, FFmpeg build, source formats and whether you are looping one input or scheduling multiple files. There is no single official YouTube command for a continuously advancing multi-file FFmpeg playlist, so do not treat a one-file loop example as a playlist solution.
Prepare portrait video and decide how it should fit
A vertical stream uses a frame that is taller than it is wide; 1080 × 1920 is one common portrait canvas. Make the output an actual portrait frame rather than relying on a landscape source to be interpreted as vertical. Choose how each source should fill that frame:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Crop to fill: fills the portrait frame but cuts off some of a landscape image. Keep faces, game action and on-screen text within the retained area.
- Fit with padding: preserves the whole source image but leaves unused space around it. A deliberate background or layout can make this look intentional.
- Designed layout: combines the source with framing or other visual elements. Check that small text and important action remain legible on a phone.
YouTube’s vertical live options include center crop, fit-to-phone-width and stacked layouts. If you use a third-party encoder for separate horizontal and vertical versions, send each format to its corresponding stream key; the two outputs need their own matching layouts.

Enable YouTube Live and get the RTMPS credentials
- Enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube requires channel verification, and the channel must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.
- Open or create the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the broadcast and vertical presentation settings you intend to use.
- Copy the RTMPS server address and stream key shown there. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in a public script, screenshot, repository or log that others can access.
- Configure FFmpeg for the RTMPS endpoint. Use the secure
rtmpsprotocol, the valid YouTube server and application path, and port 443. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS. The connection also needs the correct server hostname through TLS SNI for authentication.
For connection failures, verify that the client is using RTMPS rather than cleartext RTMP and that the endpoint, path, port and TLS hostname match YouTube’s requirements. Sources: YouTube Help: encoder-based live streaming; Google for Developers: RTMPS ingestion.
Set compatible video, audio and bitrate settings
For a conventional SDR stream, use H.264 video and AAC audio as a practical baseline. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate that both fits the chosen output and can be sustained by your upload connection.

| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder-setting figures, not a guarantee that a particular home connection can maintain the upload or that a given resolution will suit every source. Leave headroom for network variation and other devices using the connection. Choose a frame rate that matches the material where practical, and do not assume that an upscaled source gains detail from a larger output.

Test the complete playlist before relying on it
- Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast. Use the same kind of motion and audio you plan to stream, rather than testing with a static or silent sample only.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the output is portrait, the crop or padding is correct, and important content is visible.
- Watch the stream health and listen to the audio. Look for connection or encoding warnings, dropped frames, silence, clipping or distortion.
- Test transitions. Let the stream pass through the end of one file and into the next—or through the loop point for a single clip. Check for gaps, black frames, unexpected format changes and audio discontinuities.
- Observe a longer run before publishing. A short test can miss problems that appear later, including a process exit, a network interruption or a failure on a less-compatible file.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Source: YouTube Help: live encoder settings and troubleshooting.

Keep a 24/7 stream operational
A long-running stream depends on three separate parts: FFmpeg must keep reading and encoding the sequence, the network must carry the output, and YouTube must keep the broadcast and ingest active. YouTube’s API describes a broadcast as a distinct watchable video bound to a stream and illustrates a 24/7 feed alongside another simultaneous broadcast. That establishes that a persistent feed is a supported use case, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery.
- Use process supervision or a restart policy so an unexpected FFmpeg exit is noticed and handled.
- Keep logs and alert on encoder exit or ingest failure; protect logs and configuration that may expose the stream key.
- Monitor available upload capacity and the YouTube stream-health panel.
- If files or logs accumulate locally, check free disk space.
- After any restart, verify the YouTube preview and broadcast state rather than assuming the stream resumed correctly.
FFmpeg, YouTube and the network can each fail independently. Test the recovery procedure; the available documentation does not promise zero gaps or automatic recovery from every failure. Source: YouTube Live Streaming API: liveBroadcasts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use RTMPS for a straightforward FFmpeg push; do not confuse it with HLS ingest
For a typical FFmpeg encoder push, RTMPS is the relevant route. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content and documents it as a secure transport over TLS. YouTube’s HLS ingestion option is a different, segment-upload workflow: it requires muxed M2TS segments containing H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, along with a rolling media playlist and specific segment and sequence behavior.

A local playlist of prerecorded files is not the same thing as YouTube’s HLS live-ingest protocol. Use HLS only if you are intentionally implementing that segment-based ingest workflow and can meet its requirements. Sources: YouTube Help: encoder settings; Google for Developers: RTMPS ingestion; Google for Developers: HLS ingestion.
Protect the channel and the content in the playlist
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to use. A stream key protects access to your broadcast, but it does not grant copyright permission for the files. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules apply to live streams as well as uploads; review the applicable policies before scheduling a long-running playlist. A prerecorded presentation should not be described or framed as a live camera feed.
For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist and check YouTube’s current copyright guidance and channel monetization policies.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube | Wrong endpoint or key, cleartext RTMP instead of RTMPS, incorrect application path or TLS hostname/SNI | Copy the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room; confirm RTMPS, port 443, the valid path and hostname handling. |
| Portrait video appears cropped incorrectly | Source aspect ratio and output canvas do not match the chosen layout | Review the crop, fit or designed layout in the YouTube preview; keep important subjects and text in frame. |
| Black frame, silence or a glitch between clips | Incompatible input properties or a playlist transition that has not been normalized and tested | Align codecs, dimensions, frame rates and audio layouts where possible; test the actual boundary. |
| Stream buffers or reports poor health | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or competing traffic is consuming bandwidth | Check stream health and available upload capacity; reduce output bitrate or resolution to a level the connection can sustain. |
| Stream stops after running for a while | FFmpeg exited, a file ended unexpectedly, the network dropped or YouTube ingest changed state | Inspect logs and process status, confirm the next input is available, then verify the broadcast and preview after recovery. |
