The YouTube connection and vertical format are documented; playlist sequencing, process recovery and truly uninterrupted playback must be configured and tested separately.
What you need to set up
The system has two distinct parts: YouTube receives an encoded live feed, while software on your VPS must produce that feed from your prerecorded videos. YouTube documents the ingest workflow, but it does not certify a particular VPS size or a continuous source-file playlist method.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to Live Control Room.
- A VPS with an encoder such as FFmpeg, your portrait video files, and enough compute and outbound network capacity for the chosen output. YouTube does not specify a universal VPS requirement for this use.
- A YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in screenshots, scripts shared publicly or logs.
YouTube’s FFmpeg documentation describes a general media converter and its available commands and filters. It does not, by itself, establish a validated command for gapless file rotation, audio continuity, automatic restart or a 24/7 VPS service.
Choose how to create the vertical YouTube stream
| Approach | What YouTube documents | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room dual-stream handling | YouTube says streams started from Live Control Room go live in horizontal and vertical formats by default; the vertical output uses a center crop unless another layout is selected. | Check that the crop keeps important content in frame. YouTube’s vertical live viewing experience is available in the YouTube app, but not on tablets; scheduled streams and Premieres do not appear in the vertical feed. |
| Third-party encoder dual output | YouTube documents selecting RTMP(S) and using a second stream key for vertical output. Set up the vertical format before going live; it cannot be added after the stream has begun. | Send the intended output to the corresponding key. This means managing the encoder output and the vertical composition on the VPS as well as the YouTube connection. |
For a VPS-based workflow, the third-party encoder path is the relevant documented route. YouTube explains how the encoder connects; it does not specify how to build the video-file playlist that feeds it.

Configure YouTube Live Control Room and connect the VPS
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the broadcast and choose the vertical and horizontal arrangement before the stream starts. If using a third-party encoder for dual output, choose RTMP(S) and configure the vertical output and its second stream key in advance.
- Copy the encoder credentials. In the stream’s encoder settings, obtain the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented process is to start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live.
- Configure the VPS encoder. Enter the server URL and key in the encoder’s output settings. Use placeholders such as
YOUTUBE_INGEST_URLandYOUR_STREAM_KEYin examples or shared configuration; never expose the actual key. When sending the vertical output, use its designated key. - Prefer RTMPS where configured. Use the secure endpoint YouTube provides. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443 and requires the correct server hostname for SNI authentication; do not substitute an unrelated hostname or assume a generic RTMP endpoint is equivalent.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the image is portrait-oriented and framed as intended. For a scheduled broadcast, use the Live Control Room preview and start the broadcast there as instructed.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes the incoming feed and its ingestion address and stream name. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance covers the secure connection requirements.
Build and validate the prerecorded playlist separately
A playlist of video files is not the same thing as YouTube HLS ingest. With HLS ingest, an encoder sends media segments and a media playlist that describes their order. Google’s HLS documentation describes that ingest format, including a single encoded stream with muxed audio and video over HTTPS and higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC in the described use case. It is not a ready-made method for rotating local video files, and YouTube’s documented dual vertical/horizontal third-party workflow uses RTMP(S).

FFmpeg and other encoders can process media, but the exact file-concatenation method, audio handling at boundaries, restart policy, service manager and server sizing depend on your files and VPS setup. Do not assume that a playlist that plays locally will produce a continuous live feed. Before relying on it, validate:
- Portrait output: confirm the outgoing frame dimensions and aspect ratio, and check for unintended bars, cropping or rotated footage.
- File transitions: inspect changes between files for gaps, black frames, abrupt cuts, missing audio or audio-level jumps.
- Long-run operation: monitor CPU, memory and outbound bandwidth during a sustained trial using the intended output settings.
- Recovery: test what happens if the encoder stops, the VPS restarts or the YouTube connection drops. A process supervisor or restart script is an implementation choice, not a YouTube guarantee.
- Credentials and logs: ensure scripts and error logs do not expose the stream key.
These are practical checks for the media and server components, not a YouTube-published certification checklist. Until the complete workflow has been tested, describe it as a playlist setup you are validating—not as guaranteed gapless or uninterrupted streaming.

Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder stream in advance and checking the broadcast before relying on it. Its live streaming tips include starting the encoder ahead of the event, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing backup encoder failover when used, verifying that local archive files are growing, confirming that viewers can access the event from channel or watch pages and mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality. These steps help catch problems; they do not guarantee that a VPS stream will remain live indefinitely.
Preflight checklist
- Confirm the right YouTube stream and vertical output are configured before starting.
- Check the portrait framing and audio in the Live Control Room preview.
- Verify that the broadcast is accessible to its intended viewers from the relevant YouTube pages and devices.
- Check the encoder and VPS logs for connection errors without logging the stream key.
- For any backup encoder or recovery mechanism, test a failure deliberately before depending on it.
- Observe at least one complete playlist cycle, including file boundaries, before leaving the process unattended.
Understand where viewers can find the vertical stream
YouTube says viewers can encounter vertical live broadcasts while browsing Shorts in the YouTube app and may enter a full-screen vertical live experience. That surface is not universal: YouTube says the vertical live feed is not currently available on tablets, and scheduled streams and Premieres do not appear in it. A vertical stream can still have other YouTube viewing surfaces, but do not assume every viewer sees the same feed or presentation.

Sending prerecorded videos through an encoder does not make their use exempt from YouTube’s rules. Use footage, music and other material you have the rights to stream, and check the applicable YouTube policies and any license terms. A technically valid live feed does not establish that a channel or its content qualifies for monetization; review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content rather than assuming that continuous playback changes the requirements.

Troubleshoot common VPS-to-YouTube problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Server URL, stream key, selected output, network access or encoder state. | Recheck the URL and the matching key, confirm the encoder is running, and inspect connection errors. Do not paste a real key into a public support post. |
| RTMPS connection fails | Secure endpoint, outbound port or hostname/SNI configuration. | Use the RTMPS endpoint YouTube provides, allow the required port 443 from the VPS, and preserve the correct server hostname for SNI. |
| Video is cropped or not convincingly vertical | Source dimensions, output composition or center-crop layout. | Check the encoder’s actual output and the Live Control Room preview. If using YouTube’s center crop, reposition or recompose content so important details remain visible. |
| Audio drops or jumps between files | Different source audio formats, silence at file boundaries or playlist sequencing. | Inspect each transition and the resulting encoded audio. The precise correction depends on the files and playlist method; YouTube does not prescribe a universal file-rotation recipe. |
| Stream stops after a process or VPS restart | No process supervision or reconnection path, or credentials/configuration not restored. | Test the VPS startup and encoder recovery behavior, then verify the new preview in YouTube. A local process restart alone does not prove that the broadcast resumed. |
| Viewer cannot find the vertical stream in Shorts browsing | Viewing device or stream type. | Check from the YouTube app on a supported device. Scheduled streams and Premieres do not appear in the vertical feed, and the feed is not currently available on tablets. |
