Choose an Amazon IVS Real-Time stage when attendees or speakers need to talk and react to one another; choose an IVS Low-Latency channel when a presenter sends a program feed to an audience that mostly watches. For a hybrid event, put the interactive speakers on a stage and broadcast that stage to a channel for the wider audience. The two audiences do not get the same latency: AWS describes stage latency as under 300 milliseconds and channel latency as under five seconds, while actual latency varies with location, network, protocol, and the rest of the streaming chain.

This guide covers the architecture choice, setup sequence, audience limits, slide quality, network checks, and recording decisions for an event built with Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS).

Choose a stage, a channel, or both

Decision IVS Real-Time stage IVS Low-Latency channel
Best fit Hosts and participants need to exchange live audio and video. A presenter sends one program stream to an audience that primarily watches.
AWS-described latency Under 300 milliseconds for stage participants. Under five seconds for channel viewers.
Core setup Create a stage, issue participant tokens, integrate the Broadcast SDK, then publish and subscribe. Create a channel, send to its ingest endpoint using its stream key, and share the playback URL.
Audience scale planning Plan around publisher and subscriber quotas for the account and Region. Plan around concurrent-view and simultaneous-stream quotas for the Region.
Combining the two A stage can be broadcast to a channel. Channel viewers watch the stage output, but do not join the stage’s sub-300-millisecond interaction.

AWS describes a Real-Time stage as a virtual space where participants exchange video in real time. A channel is the better match for a one-to-many presentation. See the Real-Time Streaming overview and the Low-Latency Streaming overview.

Use a hybrid architecture when the event has speakers and a large audience

Keep moderators, presenters, or panelists on the Real-Time stage so they can interact. Broadcast the stage to a Low-Latency channel when many more people need to watch than participate. The channel is a viewing path, not another interactive room: do not promise channel attendees the same latency as stage participants.

Set up an interactive Real-Time event

The Real-Time flow requires an application that uses the IVS Broadcast SDK; it is not just an encoder pointed at a channel. AWS’s getting-started introduction outlines the process.

  1. Prepare AWS access. Establish an AWS account and configure the IAM permissions needed to create and manage the stage and related resources.
  2. Create the stage. Create an IVS Real-Time stage in the AWS Region appropriate for your control-plane resources and event operations.
  3. Issue participant tokens. Distribute a participant token to each person who is allowed to join. The token authenticates the participant’s access to the stage; treat token issuance as part of your access-control design.
  4. Integrate the SDK. Add the IVS Broadcast SDK to your Web, Android, or iOS application, as appropriate for attendees and presenters.
  5. Publish and subscribe. Have permitted participants publish their audio and video, and subscribe to the other stage participants they need to see and hear. Test the full join-and-publish flow before the event.

Set up a one-way presentation channel

For a presenter-to-audience broadcast, configure an IVS Low-Latency channel and send an encoder’s output to its ingest endpoint. AWS’s channel creation guide covers creating a channel, including optional recording.

  1. Create the channel. Create an IVS channel and note its assigned ingest endpoint, stream key, and playback URL.
  2. Configure the encoder. Set the encoder or streaming software to send the event feed to the channel’s ingest endpoint, using the assigned stream key to authorize contribution. Use the encoder’s supported settings and test with the actual presentation content and network.
  3. Protect the key. Keep the stream key secret: anyone who obtains it can stream to the channel. Do not put it in public pages, attendee materials, or exposed client code.
  4. Share playback with attendees. Give viewers the channel playback URL. AWS describes the playback endpoint as globally usable through its content delivery network.

IVS video ingest and playback are global, but the control plane is regional. The console, APIs, channels, stream keys, playback key pairs, and recording configurations are regional resources; make sure the Region you operate in is the one you intend to manage. Details are in the Low-Latency Streaming overview.

Plan event capacity before invitations go out

The following are AWS quota values documented for IVS and verified on October 3, 2026. They are not a guarantee of capacity for every account. Check the actual Service Quotas for the account and Region that will serve the event, and request increases in advance where the expected attendance requires them.

IVS resource Documented quota Planning implication
Real-Time stage publishers 12 publishers at once per account and AWS Region. Keep the number of simultaneous stage speakers within the account’s current allowance.
Real-Time stage subscribers 10,000 subscribers at once per account and AWS Region; adjustable. Confirm the account’s allowance rather than treating the default as universal.
Real-Time publishers across stages 1,000 concurrent publishers across stages in a Region; adjustable. Check regional quota if the account operates multiple stages or events.
Real-Time participant session duration Maximum publish or subscribe duration: 24 hours. Design participant sessions and any required reconnection around the documented limit.
Low-Latency concurrent views 15,000 per Region by default; adjustable. Verify the regional quota against expected channel attendance.
Low-Latency simultaneous streams 100 per Region by default; adjustable. Account for other concurrent channel streams in the Region.

The Real-Time overview describes audiences beyond 25,000 viewers and up to 12 hosts. That is a statement about potential scale, not a substitute for checking the account’s quotas: the quota documentation lists a default 10,000 stage-subscriber limit, which can be increased. For current account limits, see the Real-Time service quotas and Low-Latency service quotas.

Make slides and shared text readable

Presentation video has different priorities from fast-moving action: viewers need to read text and see diagrams, while rapid motion may be limited. AWS recommends layered encoding using simulcast or a lower frame rate for text and slow-moving content such as slides. Its optimization guidance also explains that SDKs can reduce bitrate, frame rate, and resolution under network congestion.

Check venue and presenter networks

Real-Time Streaming uses WebRTC and WebSocket. AWS says media uses UDP by default. Subscribers can fall back to TCP, but TCP fallback is not supported for publishing; if UDP is fully blocked, a host may fail to publish. Ask the organization’s network team to confirm the required IVS destinations and ports, particularly on managed corporate or venue networks. Test from the actual presenter locations before event day. See AWS’s Real-Time network requirements.

Recording option Useful when Costs and setup
Individual participant recording Editors need separate speaker files, or separate recordings help with moderation review. Enable it for the stage and configure a customer-owned S3 bucket. The stage, storage configuration, and S3 destination must be in the same AWS Region. AWS says there is no additional IVS charge for this option; standard S3 storage and request charges apply.
Composite recording You need a mixed, single-view program recording ready to watch. Configure the recording destination in S3. AWS charges an hourly fee for the encoded video, and S3 costs also apply.

Network problems between the source and AWS, or within AWS, can lead to recording data loss because live streaming takes priority. For an important event, make a local recording as a backup and verify the post-event playback workflow rather than relying on the cloud copy alone. See AWS’s stage creation guide and Real-Time recording options.

Troubleshoot common event problems

Symptom Likely area to check Practical response
A presenter cannot publish to a Real-Time stage. Network policy may block UDP, or the participant may lack valid stage access. Test from the presenter’s network, ask IT to verify IVS network requirements, and check that the participant has a valid token. TCP fallback does not support publishing.
The expected number of viewers cannot join. The account or Region may be at its current stage-subscriber or channel-view quota. Check Service Quotas for the exact account and Region and request an increase before the event if needed.
The channel is receiving an unauthorized or unexpected feed. The stream key may have been exposed. Restrict access to the key and replace or rotate credentials using the available AWS controls if exposure is suspected; verify the new key with a controlled test before the event.
Slide text looks difficult to read. Text-heavy material may not be well served by the current frame rate, encoding layers, or display size. Test the deck in the real viewing layout and consider AWS’s recommended simulcast/layered encoding or a lower frame rate for text and slow-moving content.
The event recording is missing or incomplete. Recording may not have been enabled or its S3 destination may be misconfigured; network issues can also cause recording data loss. Confirm recording setup and the same-Region requirement for Real-Time recording resources, test retrieval and playback, and keep a local backup for important events.

Or let it run in the cloud

Amazon IVS is for building a live event experience with interactive stages and/or live channel delivery. If instead you want a prerecorded video to keep playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate option—not an IVS integration or a replacement for an interactive event.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
