To play your Steam library on a phone, tablet, TV, or another computer, run the game on a PC with Steam and use Steam Link on the receiving device. The host PC does the game processing; Steam Link streams its video and audio to your screen and sends your controls back to the host.

How Steam Link streaming works

Steam describes Steam Link as connecting a device to a computer running Steam. The host PC runs the game and sends video and audio to the receiving device; input and multiplayer voice travel back to the PC. Steam says its Remote Play technology uses real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol, but that does not guarantee a particular response time or picture quality on your network. Which devices can receive a Steam stream?

Steam’s published overview lists Steam Link for these device families. Availability and compatibility can vary by exact model and region, so check the relevant app store and device requirements before setting up.

Device family Steam-listed platforms Published OS minimum
Apple iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro Apple devices: 11.0 or later
Android and TV devices Android phones, tablets, and TVs; Amazon Fire TV; Android devices without Google Play Android: 5.0 or later
Computers and small computers Windows, Linux, macOS; Raspberry Pi 3, 3+, 4, and 5 Not stated on Steam’s overview
VR headsets Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro See Steam’s separate wireless VR requirements below

The OS minimums above are the general Steam Link requirements listed on Steam’s overview. For joining Remote Play Together from a phone through Steam Chat, Steam lists a separate minimum: Android 6.0 or later, or iPhone/iPad 11.0 or later. Steam does not provide an exhaustive model-by-model or regional app availability list on that overview.

Set up streaming to a phone, tablet, TV, or other device

  1. On the device you want to play on, find and install Steam Link from its app store, if the app is available for your model and region.
  2. On the host PC, install or open Steam and sign in. Keep the computer running Steam available to run the game.
  3. Open Steam Link on the receiving device and follow its connection prompts to connect to the computer running Steam.
  4. Select a game and start playing. The game runs on the host PC; the receiving device displays the stream and returns your input.

For phones and tablets, a compatible Bluetooth controller may be more comfortable than touch controls. This is an optional choice rather than a Steam guarantee: check compatibility with both your device and the game. Steam notes that many games have control schemes optimized for Remote Play, but it does not publish a universal controller compatibility list.

Stream your library to another computer

For PC-to-PC play, Steam’s instructions are to sign in to Steam on both computers, then start streaming from the game in your library. The computer running the game is still the host; the other PC is the receiving screen and input device. Steam Remote Play

Stream to a wireless VR headset

Steam lists Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro for wireless VR streaming, with a specific minimum setup. Steam’s published requirements are:

  • A computer running Steam and SteamVR.
  • Windows 10 or newer.
  • An NVIDIA GTX 970 or better.
  • A 5 GHz channel and a Wi-Fi 5 router.
  • A wired connection from the PC to the router.
  • Meta Quest 2, 3, or Pro.

These are Steam’s stated minimum requirements, not a promise that other hardware combinations will work. Steam also says Remote Play Together is not supported for VR.

Invite friends with Remote Play Together

Remote Play Together is different from streaming your own game to another screen. One player owns and runs a local multiplayer game, then invites friends to join that session. Steam says up to four players can join, or more when connections are fast. It streams video, audio, and voice, and can share controller input or keyboard-and-mouse control.

  1. Launch a local multiplayer game that supports Remote Play Together.
  2. Invite friends through Steam.
  3. If a friend is joining on a mobile device, they accept the invitation in Steam Chat; Steam says the game then launches in Steam Link.

For mobile joining, use Steam Chat’s separate published minimum of Android 6.0 or later, or iPhone/iPad 11.0 or later, and confirm both apps are available for the device.

Choose the receiving device that fits how you play

  • Phone or tablet: portable and personal; consider whether the screen and available controls suit the game.
  • TV: useful for a larger shared screen, provided a supported receiving device and app are available.
  • Another computer: a straightforward option when you want to stream your library to a second PC.
  • VR headset: a distinct setup with Steam’s specific host and network requirements, rather than a general-purpose 2D stream.

Whatever you choose, performance depends on the host and network conditions. Steam characterizes its protocol as low latency, but publishes no guaranteed latency or image-quality result for an individual setup. Check Steam’s Remote Play overview and your device’s app listing for current availability and requirements.
