Start by asking what would help, then make one specific, easy-to-decline offer: share a relevant job, review a portfolio, make an introduction, or help find benefit information. A studio closure can leave people facing immediate practical decisions as well as uncertainty about what comes next; not everyone is ready to job-hunt right away.
Why direct, practical support matters
Layoffs have touched many people in the game industry, but survey figures describe respondents—not a complete count of all workers. In the GDC Festival of Gaming’s 2026 State of the Game Industry report, more than 2,300 industry professionals were surveyed. Twenty-eight percent of respondents said they had been laid off in the previous two years; among U.S.-based respondents, the figure was 33%. Half said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the previous 12 months.

Those numbers provide context, not a measure of any one person’s experience. A job loss does not establish anything about the affected developer’s skill or value. Support is most useful when it respects the person’s priorities and timing.
What can I do for a game developer who just lost their job?
Ask before acting
Try a simple question: “Would practical help, company, or space be most useful right now?” Some people may want to talk; others may prefer a quiet check-in or help with an urgent task. Do not assume that someone wants an immediate portfolio overhaul or job search.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Offer one concrete next step
Specific offers take less effort to accept or decline than “Let me know if you need anything.” For example:
- “I found a tools engineer role at a studio you might like. Want the link?”
- “Would you like me to review one portfolio piece and send feedback by Friday?”
- “I know someone on a team hiring for your specialty. Would an introduction be useful?”
- “I can help you find the state unemployment or health-coverage information that applies to you.”
- “Would groceries or help with a bill this week take pressure off?”
Make the offer easy to refuse, and follow through on the part you offered. Ask before forwarding someone’s résumé, sharing their situation, or introducing them to a contact.
Stay helpful beyond the first week
Job leads and introductions can be valuable, but a person may need time before using them. A brief follow-up later—without demanding updates—can keep support available on the affected worker’s terms.

Where can laid-off game developers find industry career support?
The IGDA Career Center points job seekers to game-industry postings, free Discord channels for job opportunities and people looking for work, networking through local chapters and discipline-based Special Interest Groups, and the Global Mentorship Program. IGDA says mentors may offer career and résumé advice, portfolio reviews, and networking assistance. Check the current access or membership conditions for any particular service before presenting it as available to someone.

Is there emergency financial help for laid-off game workers?
Game Developer reported on July 2, 2026 that union members at United Videogame Workers-CWA had established a Game Worker Hardship Fund for affected workers in the United States and Canada, including people who were not union members. The report described requests for a small amount up to $1,000 or a larger amount between $1,000 and $5,000, for needs such as groceries, medical bills, and rent.

What U.S. services can help after a layoff?
U.S. employment and benefits rules depend on the state, the circumstances of the layoff, the employer, and the person’s coverage. A friend or former colleague can help locate official information, but should not promise that someone qualifies for a particular benefit.
Rapid Response services
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Rapid Response program may connect workers with information and services before a layoff date. Depending on the state and layoff situation, services may include unemployment-insurance information, health-coverage options, training, career counseling, job-search help, and résumé or interview workshops. Ask whether a Rapid Response session has been offered; if not, help the worker find their state or local team.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Unemployment insurance
The Department of Labor advises people to contact their state unemployment-insurance program as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. State laws and other requirements determine eligibility and benefits, so the official state program—not a general checklist or a friend’s experience—is the place to confirm what applies.
Health coverage after job loss
Some workers may be eligible to continue employer group coverage under federal COBRA rules. The Department of Labor’s health and benefits guidance describes a general 60-day election period measured from the later of the notice date or the date coverage ends. A person who elects COBRA may have to pay the full premium plus a 2% administrative fee. Employer size, plan coverage, and other conditions matter; use the official election notice and compare it with other available coverage options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the developer lives outside the United States?
U.S. Department of Labor guidance does not establish rights or benefits in other countries. Help the person identify the relevant national or regional employment, unemployment, and health agencies, and check those agencies’ current rules. Avoid applying U.S. deadlines or eligibility rules to someone living elsewhere.

How can colleagues support workers beyond an individual job search?
Some people may want peer support or ways to improve working conditions, rather than immediate career assistance. The GDC 2026 survey found that 82% of U.S.-based respondents supported game-industry unionization, 5% opposed it, and 13% were unsure. These are survey responses, not a count of all U.S. game workers or evidence that every affected developer wants to organize.
UVW-CWA’s March 25, 2026 announcement described organizing activity and a proposed Game Workers’ Bill of Rights. It also announced a virtual conference for May 22–23, 2026; those dates have passed. The announcement is background on organizing, not a current event listing.
