For a longer solo run in DOOM: The Dark Ages, build the Ripatorium encounter gradually: start with a manageable demon mix and few respawn waves, leave health and ammo pickups available, and increase the pressure only when you can handle the current setup. Use the Shield Saw for both defense and offense, and weave melee into combat to support ammunition. These are practical recommendations based on documented game settings and mechanics—not a guaranteed build or record strategy.
What the endless solo challenge is
The Ripatorium is DOOM: The Dark Ages’ solo arena mode. Bethesda added its Endless option in Update 2, alongside controls for demon type and quantity, a time limit, and arena selection: City of Ry’uul, Village of Khalim, or Harbor of Souls. The arena also has an enemy respawn counter. Bethesda’s Update 2 notes describe those original controls.
Later updates turned the Ripatorium into a more flexible practice space. Update 3 added rounds and presets; Update 4 added continuous spawning and more detailed recovery settings. The options let you use the arena as a controlled practice run or make it a harsher endurance challenge.
Set up a run you can learn from
Begin with manageable pressure
Choose a modest enemy selection and a small number of respawn waves. Once that setup feels sustainable, raise enemy quantity or wave count, then try a tougher preset. Update 3 supports up to five rounds and up to ten respawn waves per round, and adds Medium, Challenging, and Sadistic presets that can be used with any difficulty level. It also adds line-of-sight blockers, which can change how enemies approach and engage you. These controls offer a gradual way to raise difficulty; Bethesda does not designate a universally best setup.

Use a time limit while practicing a particular enemy mix or mechanic, then switch to Endless when you want an open-ended survival run. The end-of-run summary can help you make the next attempt more deliberate: it shows difficulty settings and kill counts for Fodder, Heavy, and Super Heavy demons. If one class consistently accounts for trouble, adjust the enemy mix or practice against that class rather than changing everything at once. Bethesda’s Update 3 notes document the rounds, waves, presets, blockers, and summary.
Choose controlled or continuous spawns
In the existing wave-style setup, you must eliminate the enemies in a wave before the next respawn wave proceeds. Update 4’s continuous spawn mode instead respawns demons within rounds without requiring you to clear the existing enemies first. Use the wave approach when you want a more readable progression; choose continuous spawning when you want uninterrupted pressure. Continuous mode can make an encounter harder to manage because enemies can return before the current group is gone.

Keep recovery available while learning
Update 4 lets you configure health and ammo pickups as disabled, available once, or respawning on a five-minute timer. For a longevity-focused practice run, leave them enabled and use the timed option if you want a renewable supply. Once you can manage the encounter, switch to one-time or disabled pickups to add resource pressure. The same update makes Berserk configurable as disabled, one use, five-minute respawns, or unlimited; keep it available while learning, or restrict it for a tougher run. The BFC ammo setting ranges from zero to three. Bethesda’s Update 4 notes list these Ripatorium 3.0 settings.

- Parry eligible attacks: A well-timed parry reflects certain incoming attacks. It will not apply to every attack, so watch for opportunities rather than treating it as a universal defense.
- Use Shield Charge to reposition: The charge works as an evasive maneuver as well as a battering ram, letting you move through danger while striking.
- Throw the saw to interrupt or clear: The blades can lodge in demons and stun them; the throw can also mow down lesser demons.
- Exploit heated armor: The guide says striking an enemy’s heated metal armor with Shield Throw creates an explosion.
Use these functions in combination: parry when an eligible attack is coming, charge to evade or break through, and throw the saw when a stun or a hit on lesser demons would help relieve pressure.
Support your ammunition with melee
Bethesda notes that the loading tip about melee refilling ammo appears more frequently after Update 2. That supports making melee part of your combat rhythm instead of relying only on guns. The tip is a reminder of the resource loop, not a promise that melee alone will keep every weapon supplied; keep an eye on your ammo and use the Ripatorium’s pickup settings to match your practice goal. Update 2’s notes mention the more frequent tip.

Tune difficulty and resource pressure
If an encounter ends too quickly, adjust one pressure source at a time. Along with enemy numbers and wave count, the game has modifiers for enemy projectile speed and for how much health, armor, and ammunition pickups replenish. Update 3 also describes Brink of Death support: Normal provides the recommended support, while Hard provides less and makes surviving at low health more challenging. The Update 3 notes explain these options.
- For practice, keep recovery items available and use a moderate enemy mix.
- For a greater endurance test, increase enemy pressure or respawns before also restricting pickups.
- If projectiles are overwhelming you, reduce their speed rather than immediately removing all recovery support.
- If you want to practice low-health survival, choose the harder Brink of Death support setting intentionally.
What changes with Revelations content
Ripatorium content from Revelations unlocks after completing the Master Arenas. It adds Hell’s Core, Osseus, and Classic arenas; Revelations demons, including Leaders and Champions; a fully upgraded Revelations loadout; and six curated presets. Those additions give you more combinations to practice, but they do not establish one arena, loadout, or demon mix as best for the longest run. Update 4’s notes describe the expansion content.

Find your next adjustment in the run summary
After a run, use the summary’s difficulty information and demon-class kill counts to choose a focused change. For example, if you want to practice against a class that caused trouble, include more of that class while keeping other settings steady. If a run collapses under continuous spawns, return to wave-based spawning or reduce the respawn count. This is a way to use the documented summary and controls for practice, not an officially prescribed training method.
Bethesda’s published notes provide configuration details, but do not report a measured Ripatorium survival-duration benchmark or an officially ranked strategy. Your best setup depends on whether you want to learn a mechanic, practice a demon class, or push a run under stricter resource limits.
