You can switch a YouTube encoder from RTMP to RTMPS without creating a new stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, reveal and copy the RTMPS Stream URL, change the encoder’s service preset or server URL to RTMPS, and leave the existing key in its separate stream-key field. Test the connection before going live.
What changes—and what stays the same
RTMPS is RTMP sent over a TLS/SSL connection, which encrypts the connection. YouTube supports both protocols and recommends RTMPS. The protocol is determined by the encoder’s service preset or server URL; the stream key is a separate setting. YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions do not require a replacement key for this change. Switch the encoder to RTMPS
- Check for an RTMPS preset. Update the encoder to its current version and look for a YouTube RTMPS service preset. If it has one, select it and enter the key already assigned to the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s custom encoder instructions explain the separate URL and key fields.
- Otherwise, reveal the RTMPS URL in YouTube. Open YouTube Live Control Room, select the stream or schedule one, then open Stream settings. Click the lock icon in the Stream URL field to reveal the RTMPS URL. The field shows the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so confirm that the revealed address uses RTMPS before copying it.
- Replace the encoder’s server address. Paste the copied RTMPS URL into the encoder’s server or URL field. Keep the existing stream key in the key field; do not create a new key just to change protocols.
- Test the connection. Start a test stream before an event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube Help: Stream using a custom encoder
Built-in preset or manual URL?

Fix common connection errors
- SSL certificate error: Recheck the complete address copied from Live Control Room. Confirm that the protocol and server are both RTMPS. If the URL looks correct and the SSL error persists, YouTube recommends trying port 443. Match any example URL structure to the actual URL for your stream; do not substitute an example address. - Connection timeout: Verify the server URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. An encoder without RTMPS support may time out. YouTube Help: Stream using a custom encoder
- The encoder’s menu or fields look different: Check the current manual for your encoder and version. Look for a service, server, or URL setting that accepts RTMPS; do not change the key unless you intend to change which stream the encoder connects to.
- YouTube does not receive the test stream: Recheck that the selected stream in Live Control Room is the one whose key is entered in the encoder, and that you copied its revealed RTMPS URL. Confirm RTMPS support and retry the connection before the event.
