Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a game stopped working after a Proton or compatibility change, set a different Proton version for that game in Steam: open its Properties, select Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and choose the stable version that last worked, if it is listed. This is a per-game setting, not a global rollback.
Switch the affected game to a stable Proton version
- Close the game. Open the game’s page in your Steam Library.
- Open its settings. Choose Properties, then Compatibility. Steam Deck and desktop layouts may differ, but look for the same Compatibility controls.
- Force a specific tool. Turn on Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose a stable release. Select the numbered stable Proton version you previously used successfully, if it appears in the list.
- Test the game. Launch it and check whether the original problem is gone.
Valve documents the per-game compatibility selector and local configuration options in its Proton repository and Steam Deck troubleshooting guide. Choosing an older, known-working entry is a practical way to switch back; Valve does not describe it as a guaranteed rollback procedure.

What the Proton labels mean
If you are unsure which entry to try, the release channel is a useful guide to its intended role, but it cannot predict compatibility with every game. Valve’s Proton version guide distinguishes these flavors:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Flavor | Intended role and maturity | What it means when troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Proton Stable | Numbered releases, such as the wiki’s example “Proton 8.0-3,” released after extensive QA testing and a public release-candidate phase. | A sensible first choice when you want a tested release, especially if that version previously worked for this game. |
| Proton Experimental | Public testing of experimental features. | Useful for testing newer changes, but it is not the same as choosing a numbered stable release. |
| Proton Hotfix | Targeted fixes for new or important games; intended to be short-lived. | It may address a specific issue, but it is not a general-purpose stable fallback. |
| Proton Bleeding Edge | Automated and untested. | Not a routine rollback choice: Valve warns it can damage a game prefix or saves. |
The version string above is an example from Valve’s wiki, not a claim about the newest Proton release. Steam’s available choices can change. There is no universally best Proton version for all games, so if your previous version is unavailable or does not fix the issue, try another listed option and consult current reports or the game’s support guidance.

What to expect after forcing Proton
Steam may download the Windows version of a game if you force Proton and only the Linux version is installed, according to Valve’s troubleshooting guide. This is a possible outcome, not something that happens with every game. Allow for a download before testing if Steam starts one.
