Keep one YouTube live event and encoder running, then switch the program in OBS: play the guidance in one scene or source state, and mute or hide it for the quiet period. Decide first whether “silence” means no voice with ambience still playing, or no audio at all. YouTube Live Redirect is for sending viewers elsewhere after a stream ends; it does not switch content within an active event.
Choose how the quiet period should sound
There are two different production states people may call silence. Choose one before building scenes, then test the result by listening to the actual stream output.
- Voice-free ambience: stop or mute the narration while leaving music or nature sounds on.
- True silence: mute every program audio source, including ambience and any live microphone.
If you speak the guidance live, use a dedicated audio input and mute that source during quiet periods. If the guidance is prerecorded, use a media source or playlist. OBS supports common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
Pick a switching setup

OBS scenes can contain media and audio sources. Its hotkeys can switch scenes or control source visibility. A playlist can help organize prerecorded segments, but it does not remove the need to decide how the quiet interval begins and ends. The documentation does not prescribe meditation interval lengths or a particular transition duration.

Build the guided and quiet states in OBS
- Add the guidance. In the scene where it should play, add an OBS Media Source for a single prerecorded file. For an ordered playlist, add a VLC Video Source; VLC must be installed. Check the source’s playback and end-of-file behavior before relying on it during a live event.
- Add ambience separately if you want it to continue. Keep narration and ambience on independently controllable sources. Avoid putting both in one file if you need to mute the voice without muting the background sound.
- Create the states. Either make a “Guided” scene and a “Silence” scene, or keep one scene and control the narration and ambience separately. In the quiet state, disable only narration for voice-free ambience; for true silence, mute all program audio sources.
- Set a switching control. For a host-led session, configure OBS hotkeys to switch scenes or change source visibility. Choose controls that are easy to use without accidentally ending the stream. If you use the mixer’s mute control, verify the intended source by watching its meter and listening to the output.
- Prevent duplicate audio. Do not capture the same device globally and again as a scene source. OBS warns this can cause echo. Check the mixer and your monitored output for doubled microphone or desktop audio.
- Rehearse the full cycle. Test guided audio, the transition into quiet, and the return to guidance. Confirm that the quiet state contains exactly the audio you intend and that a media file ending does not stop the encoder or leave an unintended sound on air.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
- Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Verify the current Live Control Room controls and your channel’s eligibility before the event; available controls and eligibility can change.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS. YouTube describes the stream key as the stream’s password and address. Keep it private, and do not include it in a public screen share or recording.
- Start sending content from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends arranging encoder streams ahead of time, starting the encoder before the event, and checking the preview before going live.
- Keep the same event and encoder running while you switch scenes or sources. OBS controls the program sent to YouTube; the scene changes are not a new YouTube event. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
Leave upload bandwidth headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% beyond the total stream bitrate. A continuous event still depends on a functioning encoder, network, audio chain, and monitoring. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archiving detail, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation or a recommendation for an indefinite meditation stream.
Preflight and troubleshoot the stream
- The quiet interval still contains narration: check that the narration source—not just a scene element visually—is muted or hidden, and confirm the mixer meter and monitored output.
- All sound disappears when ambience should remain: you may have muted a combined source or the wrong mixer channel. Separate narration and ambience, then test each independently.
- You hear echo or doubled sound: check whether the same audio device is captured globally and again as a scene source. Remove the duplicate capture and retest.
- The stream stops when a recording ends: inspect the Media Source or VLC source’s end behavior and the encoder state. Rehearse file boundaries and playlist transitions before the event.
- Viewers cannot hear the guidance: check the intended source’s mixer level and meter, verify the selected audio input or file, and confirm the Live Control Room preview has audio before the event begins.
- The YouTube event does not receive OBS output: verify the stream URL and key in OBS and check the Live Control Room. Treat the key as a credential; if it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

Use audio and video you have the rights to stream, including music, ambient recordings, and prerecorded narration. A continuous live workflow is not a guarantee that a stream will remain available or be eligible for archiving or monetization.
