For a playlist that plays through without choosing each clip manually, use OBS’s VLC Video source instead. Studio Mode lets you prepare the next scene before sending it to the live output.
Choose how you want to play the videos
One clip at a time: Media Source in separate scenes
OBS’s built-in Media Source is designed for audio and video files placed in a scene. Create a scene for each clip or program segment, then add the relevant file as a Media Source in that scene. This gives you direct control over which clip appears next: you choose the scene during the broadcast.
OBS documents video support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio support for MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
A playlist: VLC Video source
Use the VLC Video source when you want multiple files managed as a playlist within one source. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS; OBS also notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The source offers playlist loop and shuffle controls, plus a visibility behavior setting for playback while the source is not visible. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

A playlist is convenient when you want playback to follow its configured order or shuffle behavior. Separate scenes are better when you need to select a particular clip or segment yourself.
Set up clips and switching in OBS
- Create a scene for each clip. In OBS, use the Scenes controls to add a scene for each video or segment you want to select independently.
- Add the video file. Select a scene, add a Media Source, and choose the local video file. Repeat for each scene. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how sources are added to scenes.
- Set the source behavior. In the Media Source properties, choose whether to loop, restart playback when the source becomes active, use hardware decoding when supported, or hide the source when playback ends. Set these according to how you want each clip to behave; in particular, check whether a clip should restart when you return to its scene.
- Choose how you will switch. During the broadcast, click the scene you want to show. For hands-free scene selection, assign a distinct hotkey to each scene in OBS’s hotkey settings. A regular keyboard is enough; a programmable keypad can trigger the same shortcuts but is optional.

Prepare the next clip with Studio Mode
Studio Mode separates the scene being prepared from the scene currently sent to viewers. Select or edit the next scene in the preview area, check its video and audio, then use Transition to send it live. You can also configure Quick Transitions. OBS provides transition choices including Cut and Fade, with adjustable durations; use the effect and timing that suit your program rather than assuming one is universally best. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Get the stream details in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and obtain the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes how to create an encoder stream in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Enter them in OBS. Open OBS’s stream settings and provide the YouTube stream URL and key. YouTube also explains these settings in Manage live stream settings.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen or include it in a screenshot you share. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Choose encoder output settings for your stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes bitrate and resolution tables for encoder configurations. Select settings that match your intended output and available upload connection, then verify them with a test; do not assume one bitrate or resolution fits every stream. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Test before viewers arrive
Run a test with representative video and audio before the event. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview, verify that the correct scene and clip appear, and confirm that the audio is present and at an appropriate level. Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.

- Switch between the scenes you expect to use and confirm the right clip appears each time.
- Check what happens when a clip ends and when you return to its scene, especially if you enabled looping or restart-on-activation.
- If using VLC Video, confirm the playlist order, loop or shuffle behavior, and playback visibility behavior.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health before starting the event for viewers.
Troubleshoot common switching problems
The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
A clip does not restart when you return to its scene
Open that Media Source’s properties and check the restart-playback-when-source-becomes-active setting. Also verify whether the source is configured to loop if you need it to continue after reaching the end.

The video disappears or continues unexpectedly
Check the Media Source’s hide-when-playback-ends setting. For a VLC playlist, review its visibility behavior setting; it controls playback behavior while the source is not visible.
The wrong scene goes live
With Studio Mode enabled, distinguish the prepared preview from the live output. Select the intended scene in the preview and use Transition (or the configured Quick Transition) to send it to viewers. If using hotkeys, confirm each shortcut is assigned to the intended scene.

YouTube does not receive the OBS stream
Check that OBS has the stream URL and key from the correct YouTube Live Control Room stream. Confirm the key was entered accurately and has not been exposed or replaced. Use YouTube’s preview and stream health indicators to help identify whether the encoder is reaching the event.
