YouTube Studio schedules the livestream event; it does not switch the radio program being sent. To automate program changes, schedule scene or media changes in OBS or in a compatible station playout system, then verify the outgoing feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room. For an OBS setup, Advanced Scene Switcher can use date-and-time conditions to trigger scene or media actions.
What YouTube schedules—and what it doesn’t
A YouTube live event and the audio/video sent to it are separate parts of the broadcast. YouTube Studio lets you schedule and promote the viewer-facing event; the encoder or playout system supplies the program. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a live server URL and stream key to connect that feed to the event (YouTube Help: encoder streaming instructions). The Live Streaming API likewise distinguishes the viewer-facing liveBroadcast from the liveStream carrying the feed (YouTube Live Streaming API).
So, if you are asking whether YouTube can automatically switch a playlist of radio programs at set times, the answer is no—not through event scheduling alone. Schedule the content handoff in OBS or in an existing playout system that can reliably control or supply the outgoing feed.
Set up automatic program changes in OBS
1. Schedule the YouTube event and get its stream details
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event. Set its title, visibility, and other event settings there.
- Open the encoder connection details for that event and note the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, use the matching YouTube service or server details and key. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or expose it in a recording or screenshot.
YouTube’s schedule manages the event; OBS will determine which program is actually sent to it.

2. Build the program sources or scenes
In OBS, add the audio and visual elements for each program. One easy-to-inspect arrangement is a separate scene for each show, with that show’s audio source, title, cover art, or other visuals. Alternatively, keep a shared scene and have automation change the media source within it. Choose the arrangement that fits your project and confirm which source the audience will hear and see after each change.
3. Install and configure Advanced Scene Switcher

- Create a macro for each scheduled handoff.
- Set its date/time condition to the intended change time, accounting for the time zone used by the schedule and the computer running OBS.
- Set the action to select the intended scene or change the intended media/source control.
- Configure each macro against the actual scenes and sources in your OBS project. Names and source arrangements vary, so do not assume a macro will control a source it was not configured to target.
- Start the switcher and confirm it remains active when you start streaming.
4. Rehearse the handoff before relying on it
- Run through a complete transition using the real program sources, including any fade, silence gap, or visual change you intend to use.
- Check that the next program’s audio and visuals—not just the scene label—are going out.
- Confirm the selected YouTube broadcast, stream key, schedule time zone, source audio, and next change time.
- Preview the outgoing feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Correct any mismatch and rehearse again before leaving the stream unattended.
This is an operational checklist, not a guarantee that every OBS project or radio playout setup will behave the same way.
Remote control and other switching approaches
OBS WebSocket
OBS Studio 28 and later includes built-in WebSocket integration for external tools that automate or control scenes and sources. If you use an external controller, enable authentication and protect its password, as OBS recommends (OBS remote-control guide). Remote control can trigger changes, but it does not remove the need to map the right actions and test the outgoing feed.

Use your station’s playout system
If an existing radio playout system can reliably schedule or control the feed sent to OBS or YouTube, it may be the more natural place to manage program times. There is no universal integration established for every station system; check the capabilities of your software and test the complete path to the livestream.
One continuing stream or separate events
A single ongoing event can keep the viewer experience continuous across programs. Separate scheduled events can make programs individually discoverable. The right choice depends on how you want listeners to find the shows; YouTube’s event scheduling by itself does not change the encoder’s content.

Troubleshoot missed or incorrect program changes
- The next program never starts: Check that the switcher is running, the macro is enabled, its date/time condition is correct, and the computer’s clock and time zone match your schedule.
- The scene changes but the audio does not: Inspect the target scene’s audio sources and confirm the intended source is active and audible in the outgoing mix.
- The wrong show or visual appears: Verify the macro action targets the correct scene, media source, or control in this OBS project. Rehearse with the actual project rather than relying on a similarly named source.
- The schedule works in preview but not on YouTube: Confirm OBS is sending to the intended broadcast with the matching stream key, then inspect the outgoing feed in Live Control Room.
- An external controller cannot connect: Check OBS WebSocket settings and authentication. Keep the password protected; do not disable authentication as a shortcut.
- The plugin will not install or run: Check the installed OBS version against the plugin listing, which currently specifies OBS Studio 31.1.1 or newer, and confirm platform compatibility.
Copyright and programming checks
Automation changes what is sent; it does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast the audio, recordings, artwork, or other material in each program. Confirm your permissions for every scheduled program and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements before broadcasting. Also make sure each program’s metadata and visuals are appropriate for the event and audience.
