One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIn OBS Studio, the most reliable way to switch scenes smoothly is to choose a transition and duration, prepare the next scene in Studio Mode, then take it live with the Transition button, a Quick Transition, or a hotkey. For a custom animated switch, use a stinger and set its cut point carefully. Rehearse the full change before going live so you can catch a wrong source, awkward timing, or conflicting hotkey.
Choose a transition that fits the moment
OBS Studio offers Cut and Fade from first launch, and its Scene Transitions controls let you select other styles, including Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe. OBS Studio’s overview guide also describes adjustable transition duration.
- Cut: Switches immediately. It suits gameplay or other moments where a direct change feels intentional.
- Fade: Softens the change and can create a brief visual pause.
- Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, or Luma Wipe: Adds a more distinctive visual change when that style fits your stream.
There is no universal duration that makes every transition smooth. Choose a length that suits the scene and your pacing, then preview or record a test rather than relying on an untested setting.
Prepare the next scene without showing edits to viewers
Studio Mode separates the live scene from the scene you are preparing. Check the target scene in the edit view, then send it live using Transition, a Quick Transition, or a configured hotkey. This gives you a chance to verify the scene before the audience sees it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Enable Studio Mode in OBS.
- Select the scene you want to prepare in the edit view.
- Check its sources and layout while the current scene remains live.
- When ready, use Transition or a Quick Transition, or trigger the assigned hotkey.
Studio Mode is especially useful when you need to adjust a scene before taking it live. A direct hotkey is faster for a known, rehearsed switch, but it does not itself provide the separate preview-and-edit workflow.
Set a scene-switching hotkey
OBS supports hotkeys for switching to a specific scene. Choose keys that are easy to reach but unlikely to overlap with shortcuts in the game or application you capture. Test the key while the relevant software is open so you can spot conflicts before a live broadcast. See the OBS overview guide for its hotkey and scene controls.
Streamlabs Desktop also supports scene-switching hotkeys. Its hotkey setup guide, last updated October 8, 2025, describes using creator consoles such as Stream Deck and Loupedeck to trigger hotkeys. A programmable controller is optional; the switching action can be triggered from the keyboard.

Set up a stinger transition and cut point
A stinger uses video over a scene cut: as the animation plays, the software changes from the outgoing scene to the incoming one at a specified point. OBS allows the cut point to be set in milliseconds or frames. Choose a point where the animation visually covers the change, then test it with the actual scenes you will use.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For track-matte stingers, the animated mask determines how the scenes are revealed: black represents the outgoing scene, white the incoming scene, and intermediate gray values allow a blend. OBS explains the modes and file layout in its track matte stinger documentation, dated August 25, 2021.
Keep the stinger and matte in sync
OBS says it cannot guarantee that separate stinger and matte files will decode in sync, and recommends using one file with the two portions arranged together. If each portion is 1920×1080, the documented example dimensions are 3840×1080 for a side-by-side layout or 1920×2160 for a stacked layout. These are examples for that source resolution, not fixed dimensions for every project.

Elgato’s stinger guidance describes WEBM as suitable for streaming software because it supports transparency, uses 1920×1080 as a common streaming resolution, and explains that the cut timing can be specified as a frame number or a time in milliseconds. Confirm the format and layout requirements for the particular software and asset you use.
Rehearse the complete scene change
Test the real route from each scene you expect to switch from. Check the trigger, transition style, duration, audio, and destination scene sources. A transition can look fine in isolation but still reveal an unintended source or switch at the wrong moment in the actual sequence.
- Verify the intended scene is selected before triggering a direct hotkey.
- In Studio Mode, check the prepared scene in the edit view before taking it live.
- Confirm the stinger’s cut point lands where the animation covers the scene change.
- Listen for audio that should continue, stop, or begin during the switch.
- Test hotkeys with the game or capture application open to identify conflicts.
Troubleshoot awkward or unreliable switches
The wrong scene appears
Check which scene the hotkey is assigned to, or confirm that the intended scene is selected in Studio Mode’s edit view before using Transition. Rehearse the same sequence again after correcting it.

The stinger changes scenes too early or too late
Adjust the cut point in frames or milliseconds so the underlying scene changes at the intended moment in the animation. Preview the stinger with the outgoing and incoming scenes rather than judging the timing from the asset alone.
The track matte looks out of sync
If the stinger and matte are separate files, replace them with a single combined file using a side-by-side or stacked layout. OBS cautions that separate files are not guaranteed to decode in sync.
A hotkey does not switch scenes as expected
Confirm the assigned scene and key, then check whether the game or another application uses the same shortcut. Reassign it to a less-conflicted key and test it in the same setup you will use live.
