FFmpeg does not document a universal command for hot-swapping an input file that is already open. If you want files to play in a fixed order, prepare a playlist and use the concat demuxer when the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. If you need to choose a file while the broadcast is running, keep the YouTube-facing output session open and switch the content feeding it with a persistent producer or controllable filter design. That interactive setup is implementation-specific and must be tested; simply editing a playlist or restarting FFmpeg is not a guaranteed seamless switch.
Choose the kind of switch you need
| Approach | When to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer playlist | You already know the sequence and want FFmpeg to play files one after another. | Files must have the same streams, codecs, and time bases; incorrect duration information can cause timestamp artifacts. FFmpeg concat documentation |
| Persistent interactive switcher | An operator or automation must choose content during the broadcast. | You need an upstream producer or controllable filter design that keeps the outgoing session alive. FFmpeg’s documentation does not establish one universal hot-swap command. FFmpeg command-line documentation |
Play a prepared playlist with the concat demuxer
This is the simpler option when the playlist is fixed and the media files are compatible. The demuxer reads the files sequentially; do not rely on changing its list after FFmpeg has started to alter the active input.
- Inspect every file before the broadcast. Check its streams, codecs, time base, dimensions, frame rate, and audio layout. Confirm that each file has the same streams, codecs, and time bases as the others. The demuxer is not intended for arbitrary differences in media layout. FFmpeg concat documentation
- Make the playlist in the intended order. Use the concat demuxer’s file-list format and include each input in sequence. The list is a prepared sequence, not an interactive control surface.
- Check duration information. Incorrect durations can affect timestamps for subsequent files and produce gaps or other artifacts. Verify duration metadata and test the boundaries between files before going live. FFmpeg concat documentation
- Send the playlist input to your configured live output. Keep your encoder settings, YouTube stream URL, and stream key configured for that output. FFmpeg options are position-sensitive, so follow the command-line documentation for the placement of input and output options. FFmpeg command-line documentation
- Test the full sequence. Watch the YouTube Live Control Room preview, listen for audio changes, and monitor stream health. A single sequential input/output is possible, but the cited documentation does not guarantee seamless transitions for every file combination.
When playlist files have different properties
If files differ in codec, stream layout, resolution, or aspect ratio, do not assume the concat demuxer will handle them as-is. Normalize the files to a common profile before the event, or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes them to a stable output. FFmpeg identifies its concat filter as the option designed for concatenation when re-encoding is needed. A 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion likewise recommends normalizing heterogeneous files; that is practitioner guidance, not a formal guarantee. FFmpeg FAQ · FFmpeg-user discussion
- Choose and verify common output dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and audio presence and layout.
- Set the encoder profile and live bitrate for the chosen output before the broadcast.
- Test representative transitions for both picture and sound. Confirm that the outbound format remains stable when the content changes.
Switch files interactively without treating a restart as seamless
For operator-controlled switching, put the switching behavior upstream of the YouTube output: use a persistent producer or a controllable filter graph to supply whichever content is selected while the output session remains open. This is an architectural approach, not a documented one-line FFmpeg hot-swap feature. The exact implementation depends on your FFmpeg build and media formats, so validate it in the same conditions you will use live. FFmpeg command-line documentation

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Keep one outbound session as the target. Configure the YouTube-facing output and its stream settings, then design the upstream content source to change while that output stays active.
- Define a stable outgoing format. Standardize resolution, frame rate, pixel format, audio presence and layout, and encoder settings across selectable files. Re-encoding may be useful when sources differ.
- Exercise the switching mechanism before going live. Change files several times, including transitions between representative formats. Check for frozen or missing video, audio discontinuities, timestamp problems, and changes in stream health.
- Plan for reconnects if your method restarts FFmpeg. A restart may reconnect the encoder rather than preserve uninterrupted continuity. Test how the specific YouTube event behaves instead of assuming viewers will see a seamless transition. Set YouTube ingest settings and protect the stream key
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you are actually sending; these are not universal bitrate values. YouTube encoder settings
| H.264 example in YouTube guidance | Recommended bitrate | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed 2026; specific to this resolution, frame rate, and codec. |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps | YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed 2026; specific to this resolution, frame rate, and codec. |
In YouTube’s stream settings, treat the stream key as a password: it gives access to the stream and should not appear in a public script, screenshot, or log. If it is compromised, reset it through Live Control Room. Manage live stream settings

Check rights before broadcasting
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. The setup described here concerns switching the media source; it does not establish that a particular file is cleared for a YouTube broadcast or that a channel meets YouTube’s rules for monetization or reused content. Review the applicable YouTube rules for your material and channel before scheduling a stream.
Troubleshoot switching and playlist problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The next playlist file has a timestamp gap or artifact. | Duration metadata is incorrect, or the inputs do not meet concat-demuxer compatibility requirements. | Verify durations and matching streams, codecs, and time bases; test every boundary. FFmpeg concat documentation |
| A file with a different resolution, aspect ratio, codec, or stream layout does not fit the playlist. | The inputs are heterogeneous and have not been normalized. | Normalize them to common properties or use a concat filter with re-encoding, then test the resulting output. FFmpeg FAQ |
| Changing the list has no effect on the file currently playing. | A prepared concat list is not documented as a live interactive hot-swap mechanism. | Use a persistent upstream switcher for runtime selection, or prepare the complete sequence before starting FFmpeg. |
| The stream reconnects when changing files. | The switching method may restart FFmpeg or its output session. | Test the exact implementation with the intended YouTube event and treat continuity as unverified until demonstrated. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the preview has problems. | The outgoing bitrate, keyframe interval, encoder settings, network, or media transition may be unsuitable. | Compare settings with YouTube’s current encoder table, test representative movement and audio, and monitor stream health. YouTube encoder settings |
| The stream key appears in a public place or may have been exposed. | The key was included in a shared script, screenshot, or log. | Reset the compromised key in Live Control Room and keep the replacement private. Manage live stream settings |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded videos playing on YouTube rather than build an interactive FFmpeg switcher, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live production switcher. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
