How to Switch Videos Without Interrupting a 24/7 Children’s YouTube Livestream

Keep one YouTube live session active while changing its video in OBS. Use a VLC playlist for an ordered loop or Studio Mode for operator-controlled scene changes.

Keep the same YouTube live session running and change the video inside the encoder—not by ending the live event and starting another one. In OBS Studio, either switch between prepared scenes with Studio Mode or play a set of local videos through the VLC Video source. Both methods avoid deliberately stopping the YouTube session for each change, but neither guarantees uninterrupted playback: encoder, network, media-transition, and platform problems can still interrupt a stream.

Choose a switching method

Method Best for Trade-off
OBS VLC Video playlist A fixed sequence of local videos, including a looping playlist VLC must be installed, and the playlist should be tested before going live.
OBS scenes with Studio Mode An operator deciding which video or interstitial appears next An operator or configured controls are needed to make each change; prepare and preview scenes in advance.

In either case, OBS continues sending one encoder feed to YouTube while the media or scene changes within OBS. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, with a stream key and stream URL used to direct the encoder feed to the live stream. YouTube’s live-streaming methods include encoders alongside mobile, webcam, and console options.

Set up OBS and YouTube before going live

  1. Prepare the videos and transitions. Make sure each local video plays and has the intended audio. Decide whether you need an unattended, ordered sequence or an operator choosing what appears next.
  2. Set up the YouTube encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and configure the stream. Copy the stream key and stream URL into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: keep it private, and update OBS if you reset the key. YouTube documents the encoder settings in Get started with live streaming.
  3. Configure the stream’s audience accurately. If the content is directed to children, set its audience as made for kids in YouTube Studio. Do not mislabel children’s content to retain features. YouTube restricts or removes features on made-for-kids content, including live chat, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, live chat donations, and saving to playlists. See YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance.
  4. Check the event and preview. Before relying on a long-running stream, confirm the Live Control Room shows the expected preview and verify that viewers can access the event from the channel or watch page and on mobile. YouTube’s live-streaming tips also recommend monitoring audio and video and testing encoder failover.

Option 1: Play an ordered or looping playlist

  1. Install VLC on the computer running OBS; OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the playlist.
  3. Add the local video files to that source’s playlist in the order you want. Enable playlist looping if the sequence should repeat; use shuffle only if you want playback order randomized.
  4. Check the source’s playback and audio in OBS, then make the playlist scene the live output before or during the YouTube session.
  5. Test the complete playlist—including its end-to-start transition—before leaving it unattended. OBS documents the source and its playlist controls in its Media Sources guide.

This approach suits a planned sequence: the playlist changes media inside the active encoder output, so you do not need to end the YouTube event to advance between files.

Option 2: Switch videos manually with scenes

  1. Create an OBS scene for each video or presentation layout you may want to show. Add the appropriate media source to each scene.
  2. Open Studio Mode. Prepare the next scene in the preview pane while the current scene remains on the program output.
  3. Check the preview, then use the transition control to take that scene live. You can also configure scene-switching hotkeys in OBS if you need keyboard control.
  4. Repeat for subsequent changes without ending the YouTube live session.

Studio Mode lets you prepare a background scene before making it live. This is useful when a person is choosing the next video or inserting a planned interstitial. See the OBS overview for its scene and Studio Mode workflow. OBS recommends a short test before relying on a configuration; its Quick Start Guide covers basic setup.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Test and monitor a long-running stream

Changing scenes or playlist items avoids intentionally restarting the YouTube session for each video; it does not establish a guarantee of zero interruption or indefinite 24/7 operation. Keep an eye on the Live Control Room and OBS, especially during transitions and after any change to the playlist, scene setup, or encoder configuration. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring of audio and video and testing failover. No reliability percentage or maximum 24/7 duration is established by the cited official guidance.

  • Confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the intended video and audio before relying on the setup.
  • Check access from the channel or watch page and a mobile device.
  • Test playlist looping or scene changes in a short run, including the transitions that matter to your schedule.
  • Test the encoder failover arrangement if you have one, and monitor the active stream rather than assuming the configuration will recover from every failure.

Troubleshooting video changes

  • The YouTube stream ends when you change videos: Check whether you are ending the live event or stopping the encoder rather than changing the OBS source or scene. Keep the encoder session active and switch media within OBS.
  • The VLC playlist does not play: Confirm VLC is installed, the files are available at the paths OBS is using, and the VLC Video source contains the intended playlist. Test playback and looping in OBS before going live.
  • The wrong scene appears on stream: In Studio Mode, verify which scene is in the preview and which is on program before using the transition control. Check any scene-switching hotkey configuration.
  • The stream key no longer works: Check the stream key and stream URL in YouTube Studio against OBS’s streaming settings. If the key was reset, update OBS and keep the replacement private.
  • Viewers report buffering, missing audio, or a dropped stream: A media switch does not prevent network, encoder, or platform problems. Check OBS and the Live Control Room, verify audio and video, and use YouTube’s monitoring and failover guidance rather than assuming a scene change alone will resolve the fault.
  • Chat, comments, or notifications are unavailable: These may be restricted for made-for-kids content. Check the audience setting and YouTube’s current made-for-kids feature guidance; do not change the setting inaccurately to restore engagement features.
