How to Tell If a Pokémon Promo Card Is Authentic

Start with the exact promo series and collector number, then compare the card with official references. A bright-light check can help, but it cannot guarantee authenticity.

To assess a Pokémon promo card, identify the exact printing, compare its details with an official Pokémon reference, and treat physical checks as clues—not proof. Pokémon Support recommends holding a suspicious card up to a bright light and asking a local trading-card specialist to evaluate it if doubts remain.

Identify the exact promo before comparing it

A Pokémon’s name alone is not enough: the same character can appear in multiple promos, languages, and versions. Record the card’s name, language, promo series, collector number, any event or product stamp, and its artwork and foil treatment.

Search the official Pokémon TCG card database for that specific printing. Promo series and identifiers can be easy to overlook: for example, the database lists Pikachu in “Scarlet & Violet Promo Cards” as “214/1 Promo,” while N appears in “BW—Promo” as “BW100 Promo.” Compare the matching record’s name, text, illustrator credit where shown, collector identifier, and design details. Use the same language and variant when possible.

A database match confirms that the details correspond to a listed card; it does not prove that the physical copy is genuine. A counterfeit can reproduce the printed information.

Check physical clues without damaging the card

Try Pokémon Support’s bright-light check

Pokémon Support says, “Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through if you hold them up to a bright light, so this is a good way to identify a fake.” This is a preliminary screening clue, not a guarantee: the guidance says fakes are often easy to see through, not that every fake will be obvious or every card that is difficult to see through is authentic. See Pokémon Support’s counterfeit-card guidance.

Compare like with like

When comparing two copies that claim to be the same promo, check the series and collector number first, then the language and printed text, artwork and illustrator line, stamp position and orientation, and foil or texture treatment. Keep the card’s era in mind. Pokémon’s Scarlet & Violet design announcement describes design changes, including expansion-code box coloring and foil or texture appearance. A modern card’s look is not a reliable standard for judging an older promo.

Do not use destructive tests

Do not bend, tear, cut, or peel a card to test it. Pokémon Support recommends the light check and consulting a specialist; the cited guidance does not recommend damaging the card.

Investigate unusual details before calling a card fake

A misspelling, inverted stamp, or other odd feature can be a reason to investigate, but it is not an automatic verdict. PSA’s Pokémon Error Guide documents recognized promo variations, including the misspelled “Nintedo” legal line on the 1999 Japanese Ancient Mew I and inverted stamps on some 1999 movie promos. These examples do not make every unusual feature genuine or valuable. Confirm the exact card and variation against documented references before drawing a conclusion.

When to ask an expert or verify a graded card

Raw cards

If the details remain inconsistent or you cannot confidently match the printing, take the card to a local shop specializing in trading cards for an evaluation, as Pokémon Support recommends. A seller’s assurance or a single online image is not a substitute for an in-person specialist assessment.

PSA-graded cards

For a card in a PSA holder, use PSA’s security information and Certification Verification. PSA describes current LightHouse label features, including an illumination effect, fugitive-ink pattern, UV logo pattern, and QR code that opens Certification Verification; it also describes the holder as tamper-evident. Check that the certification record matches the card being offered, and compare any available item images and details with the card in hand. A number that appears valid on its own does not establish that the slabbed card matches that record. These checks concern PSA-graded holders and labels, not authentication of every ungraded card.

What a price can—and cannot—tell you

Pokémon Support warns about booster packs offered dramatically below its suggested retail price. That warning is about booster packs; it is not proof that an individual promo card is counterfeit. Judge a promo by its exact printing and physical evidence, and seek specialist help when the evidence is unclear.
