Check the label on the console or its original box for a printed manufacture date or date code. The CUH model number tells you which PS4 model family you have, but it does not reveal when that individual console was made. If there is no date marking, you may not be able to determine the exact manufacture date from the available information.
Where to find the PS4 label
Sony says the PS4’s model and serial numbers are on the console and its original packaging. The location varies by model family. PlayStation Support explains how to identify these markings.
- Original PS4 (CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx and CUH-12xx): Check the back of the console near the bottom of the chassis.
- PS4 Slim (CUH-20xx): The serial number is beneath the lip above the power port; the model number is on the spine to the right of that port.
- PS4 Pro (CUH-70xx): The serial number is beneath the top lip opposite the system ports; the model number is on the spine above the ports.
Inspect the label for a field that explicitly gives a manufacture date or for a separate date code. Do not mistake the model or serial number for a date.
How to read a PS4 date marking
Date-code formats may vary by market. The community-maintained PS4 Developer Wiki’s date-code reference reports that North American and Japanese versions use a month and year for the manufacturing date. For European-region units, it describes a two-character code: a number for the year and a letter for the quarter. Under that scheme, “3C” means the third quarter of 2013. Treat this as reported regional practice, not a universal official Sony decoding standard.

If the marking is unclear or does not match a format you can verify, do not guess. Sony’s support page identifies the model and serial number locations but does not provide a universal serial-number decoder.
What the CUH model number can—and cannot—tell you
Sony describes the model number as “the letters CUH, followed by four numbers and a letter.” The prefix can identify the broad family: CUH-10xx/11xx/12xx models are original PS4s, CUH-20xx models are Slims, and CUH-70xx models are Pros. That helps you find the label and understand which generation of hardware you have; it does not give the exact production date of your console.

Release announcements can provide a lower time bound for a model family, not a unit’s build date. Sony announced the original CUH-1000A series for North America on November 15, 2013, and for Europe and Latin America on November 29, 2013. Sony announced initial CUH-2000 Slim availability in Japan, North America and Europe beginning September 15, 2016. Manufacture date, date code, release date and purchase date
- Manufacture date: When the individual console was made, if its label explicitly states one.
- Date code: A compact marking that may indicate a production period; the format depends on the regional practice described above.
- Model release date: When Sony announced or began selling a model family. It offers context, not an exact date for your unit.
- Purchase date: When someone bought the console. A receipt can document that transaction, not when the console was manufactured.
If there is no readable date
If the console and original packaging have no explicit date or recognizable date code, the exact manufacture date may not be determinable from these markings. You can identify the model family and use its launch timing to establish that the console was not made before that family existed, but a model number or unverified serial-number pattern cannot establish the precise production date.
