You usually cannot tell whether a game mashup video is a mod, an edit, or AI-generated from its appearance alone. Trace it to the earliest upload, check what its creator says, look for a game or mod that can be reproduced, and inspect any platform disclosures or credentials attached to the original file. Treat missing labels and metadata as inconclusive.
What the three labels mean
These are practical descriptions of how footage may have been made, not mutually exclusive categories. One video could show a modded game, then add edited overlays and AI-generated elements in post-production.
In-game mod
A mod changes or extends an existing game, or the footage may come from a modified build. Look for the game’s name, the mod or build, and a release or demonstration that someone else can inspect or reproduce. A polished clip that resembles gameplay does not establish that the depicted events actually ran inside the game.
Edit or composite
An edit may use genuine game capture but add cuts, overlays, compositing, or other post-production. A creator’s explanation, project files, or behind-the-scenes material can help show how it was assembled. Provenance credentials may record modifications, but they do not necessarily contain a complete history.

AI-generated or AI-modified footage
Footage may be generated or altered with AI, either on its own or as part of a larger edit. A platform disclosure or supported provenance signal can provide evidence of AI use. Neither a positive nor a negative result should be stretched beyond what the signal covers.
How to check a clip
- Trace the upload. Find the earliest available upload and the creator’s explanation. Follow links to the named game, mod page, project, or behind-the-scenes recording, if provided. Reposts can detach a clip from the context its creator supplied.
- Check whether a game or mod can be inspected. Look for a named game and a mod or build that can be independently examined or reproduced. A continuous capture or supporting recording may add context, but video alone can still be cut or composited.
- Read YouTube’s disclosure, if present. YouTube’s “How this was made” disclosures include an “Altered or synthetic content” label for realistic-looking content that has been meaningfully altered or synthetically generated. An absent disclosure does not prove that a clip is unaltered.
- Inspect the original file’s credentials, if available. Content Credentials based on the C2PA standard can carry assertions about a file’s origin, modifications, and AI use. The C2PA explainer cautions that provenance may be incomplete and cannot by itself establish whether content is true, accurate, or factual. Reposted or re-encoded copies may not retain the same information, so check the original exported file where possible.
- Interpret verification tools narrowly. OpenAI’s provenance guidance describes checks for supported OpenAI signals. A detected signal does not identify the creator or establish the clip’s context. No detected signal may mean the signal is unsupported, removed, or degraded; it does not rule out AI generation.
- Match your conclusion to the evidence. Prefer precise wording such as “the creator identifies this as a mod,” “the available credential records editing,” or “the source is unverified.” Use a categorical label only when the evidence supports it.
What the evidence can—and cannot—show
| Evidence | What it can support | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| A named game, mod page, or reproducible build | That a creator’s mod claim can be checked against a game or build | That every moment in the posted video is unedited or was recorded in-game |
| Creator explanation, project files, or process footage | How the creator says the clip was made; project materials may help check that account | That an explanation or file is complete and independently verified |
| YouTube’s altered-or-synthetic disclosure | That YouTube displays a disclosure for realistic-looking content it identifies as meaningfully altered or synthetically generated | That an undisclosed clip is unaltered, or that a disclosed clip has a particular production history beyond the label |
| C2PA Content Credentials | Recorded provenance assertions, such as origin or modifications, when present | A complete history, or whether the content is true, accurate, or factual |
| A supported AI verification signal | Detection of a signal covered by that tool | Who made the clip, its context, or whether an unsupported or undetected file is non-AI |
Why visual clues are not a reliable verdict
There is no general-purpose visual diagnostic standard that reliably separates a game mod from an edit or AI-generated footage. A clip’s unusual effects, smooth motion, or convincing game-like appearance are not proof of any one production method. Without the specific clip, its source history, or the original file, a case-specific classification is not established.

Provenance information is useful when it exists, but it records claims and history rather than certifying truth. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) puts the limit plainly: “Provenance information alone cannot tell you whether the digital content is true, accurate or factual.”
