How to Tell Whether a Game Mod Was Made With AI-Generated Code

Code style and detector scores can’t reliably establish whether a game mod was AI-generated. Here’s how to weigh disclosures, development records, and code checks.

Usually, you can’t reliably tell from a mod’s code alone whether AI generated it. The strongest evidence is a creator’s specific disclosure or attributable development records—not code style or a detector score. If your real concern is whether a mod is safe or compatible, inspect what it does and test it separately from the question of who wrote the code.

What can—and can’t—show AI involvement

Code that looks unusually tidy, repetitive, generic, or oddly commented is not proof of AI authorship. People write in varied styles, and AI-assisted code can be edited, combined with existing work, or rewritten until its origin is not apparent. A commit author or a large, sudden code change is not proof either.

Evidence is more useful when it connects a specific claim to the code itself. A creator might disclose using AI for code, while a separate disclosure might concern artwork, descriptions, or other assets. Those are different claims: check what the creator says the tool did and what they reviewed.

  • Direct disclosure: The author says AI helped write or modify code, ideally describing which parts and how they were checked.
  • Attributable development records: Dated commits, pull requests, issue discussions, and release diffs can add context when they connect the author’s explanation to the changes.
  • Code appearance or a classifier result: These can suggest questions to investigate, but cannot establish authorship on their own.

How to check a specific mod

1. Look for a code-specific disclosure

Read the mod page, README, release notes, and relevant author responses. Distinguish claims about code from claims about art, writing, or other assets. If the statement is vague, ask what work the tool performed and what the creator reviewed.

2. Review the development history, if it is public

Check commits, pull requests, discussions, issue references, and differences between releases. Look for dated, attributable records and whether they support the creator’s explanation. History can help establish context; a name attached to a commit or an abrupt change cannot prove AI use.

3. Inspect the mod’s behavior and code quality

Check whether the changes match the mod’s description, whether its APIs and dependencies fit the target game and mod loader, and whether error handling and permissions make sense. Look for tests or reproducible instructions. These checks help assess quality, compatibility, and safety—not authorship.

4. Treat detectors as triage, not verdicts

If you use a detector, record its name and version, supported programming language, what code you submitted, and the conditions under which it was evaluated. A result is a lead for manual review, especially if the detector has not been validated on the mod’s language and kind of code.

5. Keep source matching separate from AI detection

A match to public code may point to reuse or a shared source. It does not show whether the matched code was generated by AI. Check the original source, its license and timestamps, and any relevant development records.

6. Describe what the evidence actually establishes

Prefer precise conclusions such as “the author disclosed AI assistance,” “the history is consistent with AI assistance but does not establish it,” or “I could not verify authorship.” Avoid accusing a creator based only on code style or an opaque classifier score.

Why AI-code detectors can mislead

A detector’s result depends on what it was trained and tested on: the programming language, coding domain, AI models, and how much humans edited the output. Research on code detection does not establish a reliable detector for game mods, and the cited studies are not mod-specific.

The 2025 EMNLP paper Droid: A Resource Suite for AI-Generated Code Detection describes a benchmark suite with over one million samples, seven programming languages, outputs from 43 coding models, multiple coding domains, and hybrid human-AI and adversarial examples. Its authors report that existing detectors fail to generalize well to diverse domains and languages beyond narrow training data. Those dataset dimensions describe the benchmark, not the prevalence of AI-written code in mods or the accuracy of a detector on a particular mod. Read the Droid paper.

The 2025 study Hiding in Plain Sight: On the Robustness of AI-generated Code Detection likewise reports fragile performance in real-world scenarios: zero-shot performance fell substantially compared with originally published results, and trained classifiers lost their advantage when training and evaluation data differed. Its evaluation includes generated Python solutions, so it should not be treated as a test of game-mod code. Read the study.

A narrower positive result illustrates why benchmark scope matters. In a 2024 CodeChef study, Idialu and colleagues trained a classifier to distinguish GPT-4-generated from human-authored Python solutions to 399 problems, using 798 solutions from each group. They reported an F1-score and AUC-ROC of 0.91; a version excluding gameable formatting features reported 0.89 for each metric. These are results for that dataset and task—not expected accuracy on a random mod, other languages, other AI systems, or current detectors. Read the Whodunit study.

What public-code matches and watermarks mean

GitHub documents a limited public-code matching feature for eligible Copilot suggestions. It compares an accepted, unchanged suggestion and surrounding code with an index of public GitHub repositories. The index excludes private repositories and code hosted elsewhere, may not include recent code, and can point to code that has since moved or been deleted. GitHub says public-code matches occur in less than 1% of Copilot suggestions; that figure describes this feature’s matches, not how often code is AI-generated. A match can help with source and license review, but does not prove AI generated a mod’s code. See GitHub’s feature documentation.

OpenAI says a watermark can be evidence that an OpenAI model likely generated or processed content, but it does not establish authorship, ownership, legal responsibility, or the extent of a person’s contribution. Code is harder to watermark than ordinary prose because it offers fewer plausible next-token choices. Do not assume a code snippet carries a detectable watermark. Read OpenAI’s explanation of provenance signals.

GitHub’s article on code generation states: “For smaller amounts of AI-generated code, there is no way at the moment to detect traces of AI in code with true confidence.” That is a vendor statement, not a permanent scientific guarantee. Read the GitHub Blog article.

Judge safety and compatibility on their own merits

Whether AI contributed to a mod does not, by itself, tell you whether it is safe, functional, compatible, or properly licensed. Assess the mod’s behavior, dependencies, permissions, installation steps, and compatibility with your game and mod loader independently. Authorship evidence and practical risk checks answer different questions.
