A physical Nintendo Switch 2 game may be a game-key card that requires a full-game download; for original Nintendo Switch games, do not assume a universal label or rule. Updates, downloadable content and online play are separate from whether the base game is on the card.
Check the exact edition before buying
- Identify the platform and edition. Record the full product name, whether it is for Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, and the region or edition shown on the box or listing. Different editions of the same game can use different formats.
- Inspect the package for download or game-key-card wording. Nintendo says game-key cards are visibly distinct from regular game cards. Nintendo UK’s guidance says the card has a key icon at the top-right of its front, and the packaging states the storage space required. See Nintendo UK’s game-key-card guidance.
- Read the publisher’s page for that release. Look for explicit statements about whether the base game is included, whether a download is needed, and whether an internet connection is required. A statement about one publisher’s games does not establish what is on another publisher’s card.
- Ask if the evidence is unclear. Request confirmation from the publisher or retailer for the exact edition or SKU, and keep the reply or a package image if the distinction affects your purchase.
Know which card format you are looking at
Original Nintendo Switch game card
The cited Nintendo guidance does not establish a universal packaging rule proving that every original Switch game card contains the complete base game. Nintendo’s Japanese platform guidance says game-key cards are for Switch 2 software, not Nintendo Switch software; that distinction does not answer what is stored on every original Switch card. For example, Konami Support stated on August 29, 2022: “Yes. All physical cartridges contain all of the games and does not require a download nor online connection.” That is Konami’s answer about its products, not proof of a rule covering every Switch publisher or release. Konami Support’s FAQ.
Nintendo Switch 2 standard game card
Nintendo says Switch 2 supports regular game cards as well as game-key cards. Check which type the exact package identifies rather than relying on a retailer’s broad “physical” label. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ.

Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card
A game-key card does not contain the full game data: it provides a key to download the game. Nintendo says you need an internet connection and enough storage on the system or a microSD Express card for that download. The card must remain available to play the downloaded game. Digital bundle or download
“Full game included” does not necessarily mean the game is on a cartridge. Nintendo says its 2024 Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle included a full-game download registered through Nintendo eShop. Separate the base game from updates and online features
Whether the base game is on a regular card is different from whether you need internet for other features. Nintendo’s support guidance says update data and additional content require internet to download, and online play requires a connection. Those needs alone do not mean the base game is missing from a regular game card. Nintendo Support on updates, additional content and online play.
- Base game: Is the game data itself on this card, or must it be downloaded?
- First-time setup: Does this edition require an initial download to play?
- Updates and add-ons: Are updates or additional content downloaded separately?
- Online features: Does the game require a connection for multiplayer or other online functions?
Compare editions without confusing their requirements
When weighing two releases, compare the exact platform and SKU rather than assuming a later or differently packaged edition proves what an earlier one contains. Check the card type, package wording or key icon, publisher confirmation, required storage, and separate update, DLC and online-play needs.

Nintendo’s published guidance distinguishes Switch 2 game-key cards, and Konami provides a publisher-specific example for physical cartridges. The cited sources do not establish an industry-wide percentage of a typical Switch game stored on its card or a single disclosure convention for every original Switch title, publisher, region and edition. For a specific purchase, rely on evidence for that exact release.
