Set the YouTube broadcast’s privacy to Private, send FFmpeg’s output to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, and wait for the incoming feed to appear in the preview. Do not select Go live until you are ready to start the audience-facing broadcast. For API-managed broadcasts, YouTube also documents a separate Testing state that sends the feed to a private monitor stream.
Private, unlisted, and Testing mean different things
YouTube treats the encoder feed and the broadcast viewers watch as separate resources. The incoming feed is the stream; the audience-facing event is the broadcast. A broadcast set to Private is limited to invited viewers, while an Unlisted broadcast can be watched by anyone who has its link. Unlisted is therefore not a substitute for private testing. YouTube’s Live Streaming API overview describes the distinction and the API’s monitor-stream behavior.
In the API workflow, the broadcast’s testing lifecycle state routes incoming content to a monitor stream intended for the broadcaster. You must enable the monitor stream, confirm that the bound stream is active, and transition the broadcast to testing. This is an API-managed sequence; do not assume that every YouTube Studio screen has a button with the same name. For ordinary Live Control Room use, keep the broadcast privacy set to Private and check the encoder preview without selecting Go live. See the LiveBroadcast resource documentation.
Test from YouTube Live Control Room with FFmpeg
- Create or schedule a private broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. Set its privacy to Private. YouTube allows stream privacy to be changed among public, private, and unlisted; private videos are visible only to invited users. Account access and invitations are part of the privacy boundary. See YouTube’s privacy settings guidance.
- Copy the event’s encoder details. In Live Control Room, copy the server or stream URL and the stream key associated with this broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering these values in encoder software. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, public examples, shell-history excerpts, or support requests. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s stream-key management guidance.
- Send your test source using FFmpeg. Substitute your own input and the destination format YouTube provides. The following is a schematic command, not a command with a real stream key:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -f flv "STREAM_URL/STREAM_KEY"
FFmpeg documents-refor reading a file at its native rate in its RTMP examples, and shows FLV muxing to an RTMP destination. Use the actual endpoint format displayed for your stream; do not assume every account or ingest configuration has an identical URL. See FFmpeg documentation. - Check the incoming feed in Live Control Room. Wait for YouTube to receive the encoder signal and show its preview. Confirm the intended picture and audio are present. Seeing a preview confirms feed reception; it does not mean the broadcast is public. Keep the broadcast Private and do not choose Go live if you are only testing. YouTube’s live-stream management guidance describes the privacy and go-live controls.
- Stop the test deliberately. Stop FFmpeg when you have finished checking the feed. If you later want an audience to watch, return to Live Control Room and start the broadcast only when ready; confirm the selected privacy setting before doing so.
API-managed testing with a monitor stream
Use this route when your workflow creates and controls broadcasts through the YouTube Live Streaming API. The API separates the broadcast lifecycle from the stream resource. Its documented testing path requires a monitor stream configured for the broadcast, an active bound stream, and a transition of the broadcast to testing. The monitor stream is private and accessible only to the broadcaster, according to the API overview. Follow the resource-specific requirements in LiveBroadcast documentation; this API state should not be confused with a generally available Studio control.

Troubleshooting a private test
- No preview appears: Confirm FFmpeg is still running and that you copied the stream URL and key for the correct event. Recheck the destination formatting against YouTube’s displayed endpoint; wait for Live Control Room to receive the signal.
- The test might be visible to others: Verify that the broadcast is set to Private, not Unlisted, and that invitations and account access are limited to intended viewers. Do not select Go live merely to make a preview appear.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset the compromised key in Live Control Room, then update FFmpeg to use the replacement. Never reuse a key shown in a public screenshot or log.
- The API does not enter Testing: Check that the broadcast is API-managed, its monitor stream is enabled, and its bound stream is active before requesting the testing transition. Studio may not expose the API lifecycle state under an identically named control.
