FFmpeg can test RTMP and RTSP; the hls.js demo is useful for browser-based HLS checks; and the DASH-IF dash.js reference player can test DASH. A successful test proves only that the chosen client and environment played the stream at that time—not that every device, browser, or network will.
What a useful stream test should establish
A stream can fail at several distinct stages. The client may be unable to reach or authenticate to the endpoint; a playlist or manifest may load while its media segments fail; media may be delivered but unsupported by the player; or playback may start and then stall. Record the stage and the actual error instead of treating every failure as “the stream is down.”
For a meaningful check, verify that playback starts and the timeline progresses. When results are ambiguous, test with a second compatible client or environment. A successful test is evidence about that client, network path, and moment; it is not a guarantee of universal compatibility or production performance.
Test a stream step by step
- Record the endpoint and test context. Note the protocol, full endpoint, time, client and version, operating system or browser, and any authentication requirements. Keep credentials private; remove tokens or passwords from URLs before sharing logs or screenshots.
- Choose a client that supports the protocol. Use FFmpeg for RTMP or RTSP checks, hls.js or a native-HLS-capable player for HLS, and dash.js for DASH. A browser test can fail because of browser media API or codec support rather than a broken source.
- Check the entry resource or session. For HLS, determine whether the playlist loads. For DASH, check whether the MPD manifest loads. For RTMP and RTSP, check whether the client can establish a connection or session and discover media.
- Check media retrieval and playback. For playlist- and manifest-based streams, see whether referenced media segments can be fetched. Confirm that video or audio actually plays and that playback time advances; a loaded player or manifest alone is not a successful end-to-end test.
- Observe sustained playback. Note stalls, unexpected end-of-playback, failed segment requests, and player errors. For DASH, the dash.js functional-test guidance includes checks for playing state, timeline progression, and critical errors.
- Compare results and report observations. If one suitable client fails, try another and, where possible, another network. Record response codes and exact errors, whether the failure repeats, and whether another client succeeds. Redact secrets from failed resource URLs. Use origin or CDN logs to investigate server-side behavior.
How to test each protocol
RTMP
FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS support. Its documented RTMP URL pattern is rtmp://[username:password@]server[:port][/app][/instance][/playpath]. Check that the server, port, application, instance or play path, and any credentials match the server configuration. Treat a connection or authentication error separately from a codec or playback error: a failure before media is received does not tell you whether the media itself can be decoded. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HLS
Start with the playlist URI and then check the media it references. RFC 8216 describes HLS media playlists as sequences of media segment references; a master playlist can describe variant streams at different bitrates or resolutions and alternate renditions. A playlist response by itself does not confirm that its segments are reachable or playable. Check both stages. The RFC 8216 specification, published in August 2017, describes version 7 of HLS.
The hls.js demo accepts a stream URL and provides playback, timeline, quality-level, error, and real-time metric views. hls.js requires Media Source Extensions (MSE) support for its playback path and supported media inputs. Some platforms, including Safari platforms, may instead play HLS natively through the video element. Check the hls.js API and compatibility notes, and test the browser and player combination you actually intend to use. A failure in an arbitrary browser is not by itself proof the HLS stream is invalid.

RTSP
FFmpeg documents RTSP transports including UDP and TCP interleaving, as well as HTTP or HTTPS tunneling options for some use cases. If a connection or playback test behaves differently across transports, record which one was used. Comparing them can help narrow a transport or firewall difference, but does not by itself identify whether the source, firewall, or network caused the problem. Refer to the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation for its RTSP options.
DASH
Use the DASH-IF dash.js reference player or a sample player and provide the MPD manifest URL. The dash.js quickstart shows initialization against a video element and manifest URL. The client targets MPEG-DASH playback on browser platforms that support the relevant media APIs.

Check that the manifest is accepted, playback starts, the timeline progresses, and no critical errors occur. The dash.js functional-test guidance also describes checks for buffer cleanup, manifest updates, seeking, and audio switching.
Diagnose failures by the stage where they occur
These are troubleshooting hypotheses, not diagnoses of a particular endpoint. Capture actual client errors and, where available, server-side logs before assigning a cause.

| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Connection or authorization fails | Check endpoint spelling, port and path, credentials, token expiry, access rules, and reachability. For RTMP, separate connection or authentication errors from later media errors. |
| HLS playlist or DASH manifest loads, but media segments fail | Inspect referenced resource paths, permissions, HTTP responses, and whether those URLs are reachable from the client. A loaded entry resource does not establish that its media is available. |
| Resources load, but media does not initialize | Check supported container and codec combinations, player support, and playlist or manifest conformance. Compare a second compatible client before concluding the source is broken. |
| Playback starts and then stalls or ends unexpectedly | Check whether segments remain available, playlists or manifests continue to refresh, the network is consistent, and the player reports buffer or playback errors. |
| One browser fails while another works | Compare native HLS and MSE playback paths, codec support, and browser-specific delivery constraints. Test the intended browser/player combination. |
| RTSP results differ between UDP and TCP | Record the transport used for each result. The difference narrows the investigation but does not identify the responsible source, firewall, or network component by itself. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Protocol testing checks whether a client can play a stream; it does not keep a YouTube channel live around the clock. If your goal is to loop uploaded videos on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
