To stream a playlist of videos with different resolutions reliably, normalize every clip to the same output dimensions and frame rate, then send the sequence through one continuous encoder. Preserve each clip’s aspect ratio with padding or intentional cropping, and choose bitrate and keyframe settings from YouTube’s live ingest guidance for your chosen resolution and codec.
Plan a single output profile
Choose the live output before preparing the playlist. Every clip must reach the same canvas dimensions and frame rate, even if the source files differ. Your choice depends on the stream’s visual needs, the encoder your machine can sustain, available network upload capacity, and YouTube’s ingest recommendations.
- Resolution: Select a fixed output canvas such as 1280×720 or 1920×1080. Higher resolution is not automatically better if the encoder or connection cannot sustain it.
- Frame rate: Choose a fixed rate appropriate for the content and hardware. YouTube supports live frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Codec and encoder: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Check that the installed FFmpeg build and your hardware support the chosen encoder.
- Picture fit: Decide whether to preserve the whole image with bars or fill the canvas by cropping. Avoid stretching unless distortion is intentional.
- Color and audio: For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and square pixels. Choose a consistent audio format and confirm that every clip can be handled by the same output settings.
There is no universally best profile for every channel or computer. The source library, target quality, encoding capacity, network headroom, and latency needs all matter.
Inspect every source clip
Inventory the media before building a shared filter chain. FFmpeg’s ffprobe can report stream properties; for example, run ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format input.mp4 for each file, replacing input.mp4 with its path. Review the output rather than assuming the filename or player display tells the whole story.

- Video width, height, frame rate, sample aspect ratio, scan type, and pixel format.
- Audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and whether audio is present.
- Color metadata and whether the source is SDR or HDR.
- Unusual aspect ratios, variable or differing frame rates, interlacing, and timestamp irregularities.
These differences can affect scaling, deinterlacing, frame conversion, color treatment, audio mapping, and transitions. In particular, HDR or mixed color metadata needs an intentional conversion workflow; merely changing a metadata label does not convert the image correctly.

Normalize dimensions without distorting the picture
FFmpeg’s scale filter can preserve the source aspect ratio while fitting the image within a target canvas. A fit-and-pad pattern for a 1920×1080 output is:
scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2
The scale stage reduces the picture as needed to fit the specified dimensions while retaining its proportions; the pad stage adds borders where the scaled picture does not fill the canvas. This is a filter pattern, not a complete command guaranteed to work unchanged for every FFmpeg build, input, or encoder. Check the installed version and available filters and adapt the graph to your media.

Fit and pad
Use fit-and-pad when retaining every edge of the source image matters. Clips with a different aspect ratio will show bars on two sides or above and below the picture. This avoids both distortion and content loss.
Fill and crop
Use a scale strategy that fills the canvas followed by a deliberate crop when a full-frame presentation matters more than preserving every edge. This keeps the picture’s geometry but removes some source content. Preview the crop on each aspect ratio, especially when important action or text is near the edges.
Stretch
Stretching changes the apparent shape of objects and people. It is generally the wrong choice unless that distortion is intentional.

For sources with non-square sample aspect ratios, account for display aspect ratio rather than blindly treating stored pixel dimensions as the displayed shape. FFmpeg’s filter documentation describes reset_sar, which resets sample aspect ratio to 1:1 while accounting for display aspect ratio during proportional scaling. The force_divisible_by option can constrain dimensions when aspect-ratio enforcement is enabled; the resulting ratio may shift slightly. Check encoder dimension requirements, since some encoders require even dimensions.

Choose the right way to join clips
FFmpeg has several concatenation mechanisms, and they solve different problems. The FFmpeg FAQ describes the concat filter as intended for concatenating with re-encoding, and recommends it when re-encoding is needed. That makes it the natural option when clips need normalization. The concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when input streams meet its compatibility constraints, so it is not a substitute for normalizing a mixed collection. The concat protocol is another distinct mechanism; file concatenation alone does not create a robust live-playlist system.
For a live playlist, the operational goal is a stable, continuous encoded output while playback advances from one source to the next. Pick a mechanism that supports that goal and test transitions, rather than assuming that joining files on disk is enough.

Set timing, audio, and live ingest parameters
Convert the playlist to one output frame rate and a consistent audio format when its sources differ. Check timestamps, frame pacing, and audio continuity at every transition; different frame rates and audio layouts do not necessarily join cleanly. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio; over RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC.
YouTube’s published H.264 live ingest recommendations, accessed in 2026, are:

These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a measurement or guarantee for a particular stream. The live encoder guidance has separate bitrate values for other resolutions and for H.265 and AV1. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the profile you actually use. Leave network headroom above the target bitrate and test at the planned settings; a connection that only just matches the video bitrate leaves no margin for reliable delivery.

For SDR output, use Rec. 709 and square pixels as YouTube recommends. If inputs include HDR or inconsistent color metadata, decide how to convert them before the live encoder stage. A stream can have consistent dimensions and still look wrong if its color handling is inconsistent.

- Inventory the files. Record the properties listed above and flag interlaced, HDR, unusual-aspect-ratio, or timestamp-problem clips.
- Lock the output profile. Set one resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, audio format, and color target for the full playlist.
- Apply normalization. Scale each source to the fixed canvas with the chosen fit-and-pad or fill-and-crop policy. Add any required frame-rate, audio, deinterlacing, or color conversion deliberately.
- Keep the encoder continuous. Feed the normalized sequence through a persistent encoder so the live output remains stable as the playlist advances.
- Run a representative test. Include clips with different resolutions, aspect ratios, frame rates, audio layouts, and color properties. Watch transitions and check the YouTube stream-health indicators during the test.
- Monitor the event. Keep an eye on stream health and confirm that the encoder and network sustain the chosen profile. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio and monitoring stream health.
Exact commands depend on the FFmpeg version and build, encoder, playlist design, latency mode, and files. A shared filter pattern must be validated against the actual collection; hardware encoders can also have different constraints from libx264.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Clips appear stretched: The scale chain is filling the canvas without preserving aspect ratio. Use proportional scaling and either pad the remaining space or crop intentionally.
- Bars appear unexpectedly: Fit-and-pad preserves the whole image, so bars are expected when aspect ratios differ. If edge loss is acceptable, change to a deliberate fill-and-crop policy.
- Encoder rejects dimensions: Check for odd output dimensions and the selected encoder’s constraints. Adjust the output dimensions or scaling options to produce compatible values.
- Playback stutters or transitions break: Compare frame rates and timestamps, then inspect how the chosen concat method handles the inputs. Normalize timing and test the transition between the specific clips.
- Audio drops, changes level, or switches layout: Inspect audio presence, sample rate, and channel layout across the sources. Map and normalize audio consistently, then listen through transitions.
- Colors look washed out or wrong: Check SDR/HDR status and color metadata. Use a deliberate conversion where needed; relabeling metadata alone is not a conversion.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: Check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate with headroom, verify CBR and the keyframe interval, and test with representative motion and audio.
