To copy a large video from an Android phone to a VPS in India, connect to the server with SFTP over SSH and upload the file to the directory where you want it stored. You will need the VPS hostname or IP address, SSH port, username, authentication method, and enough free server storage. If an upload is interrupted, some OpenSSH clients can attempt to resume it, but resumption assumes the partial remote file matches the local file.
Copying a file to a VPS is not the same as uploading or publishing it on YouTube. An SFTP transfer puts the file in the VPS filesystem; YouTube’s upload workflow puts it on YouTube.
Choose the destination before you transfer

For the stated goal—putting a file on an India-hosted VPS—start with SFTP. Use cloud storage as a staging step if your phone or network makes a direct upload unreliable. Choose YouTube’s resumable upload only when the intended destination is YouTube itself.
Before uploading, check the VPS details
Get these values from your VPS provider or server administrator. The SFTP port may differ from the usual SSH default, so use the port configured for your server rather than assuming one.

- Hostname or IP address: the server endpoint your phone can reach.
- Port: the configured SSH/SFTP port.
- Username and authentication: the account and password or SSH key required by the server.
- Target directory: the remote folder where the video should be saved, and whether your account can write there.
- Free disk space: confirm that the VPS has room for the whole file, with some space left for other server tasks.
- Provider limits: check any monthly bandwidth policy, transfer cap, or file-size restriction attached to your VPS.
For an India VPS, verify the actual region, usable storage, network-transfer terms, and access method in the plan details. A provider’s description of its own storage VPS is not independent proof of speed, value, or a particular network route.
Android: upload directly with an SFTP app
An SFTP-capable file-transfer app is the simplest point-and-tap option. App names and screen labels vary, so use the app’s SFTP or SSH connection option and enter the VPS details you confirmed above.

- Install an SFTP-capable client from a source you trust and open its connection setup.
- Choose SFTP (not plain FTP), then enter the VPS hostname or IP, configured port, username, and authentication details. Save the connection only if the phone is yours or otherwise secured.
- Connect and open the intended remote directory. If access is denied, check the username, authentication method, and directory permissions with your provider or administrator.
- Use the app’s local file picker to select the recording. Android storage rules mean an app may not be able to browse another app’s private storage; selecting the file through the system picker can provide access where direct browsing does not.
- Start the upload. Keep the phone on reliable Wi-Fi and powered while a large transfer runs. Avoid battery settings that aggressively put the transfer app to sleep, while recognizing that behavior varies by device and app.
- When the transfer finishes, confirm that the remote file appears in the target directory and that its size is plausible. For stronger verification, compare a cryptographic hash produced for the local file and the remote file.
A graphical client may offer its own resume or retry option. Do not assume every app resumes partial transfers safely; check its behavior and avoid treating a partially uploaded file as complete.
Android: use Termux and OpenSSH
Termux provides an Android terminal and Linux environment, and its project documentation describes connecting to remote servers with OpenSSH. This route is useful if you are comfortable with a shell and can identify a file path the app is allowed to read. Android app-specific storage and shared-storage access are restricted, so a terminal may not see a recording kept inside another app’s private folder.

- Install Termux from its official project source. Open it and install OpenSSH with
pkg updatefollowed bypkg install openssh. - If the recording is in shared storage and is not visible to Termux, grant the Android storage permission through the system prompt by running
termux-setup-storage. This does not grant access to every app’s private files. - Identify the video’s readable local path. For shared storage, Termux commonly exposes shared files under
~/storage/shared; use the actual path shown by your device and file layout. - Connect to the VPS with
sftp -P PORT USERNAME@HOST, replacingPORT,USERNAME, andHOSTwith the server’s configured values. The uppercase-Pspecifies the port for OpenSSH SFTP. Authenticate when prompted. - At the
sftp>prompt, change to the target remote directory withcd /remote/target/directory. If needed, check the remote working directory withpwd. - Upload the file using
put /local/path/video.mp4, replacing the example path and filename with the actual readable local path. Quote paths containing spaces, for exampleput "/local/path/My recording.mp4". - Wait for the transfer to finish before closing the session. Use
ls -lat the SFTP prompt to inspect the remote file listing, thenbyeto disconnect.
Attempt to resume an interrupted OpenSSH SFTP upload
OpenSSH SFTP supports the -a option to attempt to resume a partial transfer. Reconnect to the same server and directory, then run put -a /local/path/video.mp4. Resumption assumes that the partial remote file is the same file as the local source; if it is not, the result can be corrupted. If you changed the source file, uploaded a different file under the same name, or are unsure what remains on the server, remove or rename the partial remote file before starting a clean upload instead.
Keep a long phone upload from failing unnecessarily
- Use stable Wi-Fi and power: long uploads can be interrupted by a weak connection, a sleeping phone, or an app being stopped. A VPS provider’s Android guidance recommends stable Wi-Fi, checking server free space, and avoiding aggressive app sleep; these are practical recommendations, not guarantees that every device or client will keep running.
- Check free space first: a transfer can fail or leave an incomplete file if the VPS runs out of storage.
- Keep the original recording unchanged: especially when using a resume option, use the same source file and remote partial file.
- Do not expose credentials: use the intended SSH authentication method and do not share a private key or password in chat or an untrusted app.
- Verify completion: compare the remote file size with the phone’s local file information. For a stronger integrity check, calculate a cryptographic hash on both ends and compare the results; the exact mobile method depends on the app and file access available.
Use resumable cloud storage as a staging route
Google Cloud Storage supports resumable uploads, which send a file in multiple requests so a communication failure does not necessarily require starting again at byte zero. A resumable session can remain active for up to one week. Its command-line tools can manage resumable uploads, and Google documents integrity checking for completed large uploads.

- Set up a cloud bucket and permissions that let your chosen phone app upload to it.
- Use a client that supports resumable uploads and send the video to the bucket. Confirm the upload completes before treating the bucket copy as your backup.
- Copy the object from the bucket to the VPS using a transfer method available in your setup, then verify the VPS copy.
- Review storage and data-transfer charges, access permissions, and how long the staged copy will remain in the bucket. The costs vary by configuration and are not a universal fixed amount.
Protect a resumable upload session URI as carefully as an authentication token. Google says it can authorize access to the upload session; avoid sharing it and use HTTPS when transmitting it.

Do not use SFTP for this step: SFTP sends the file to the VPS, not to YouTube. The YouTube Data API resumable protocol starts an upload session, returns a session URI, accepts file data, and lets a client query the current state and resume from the range reported by the server after an interruption. Google identifies large files and unstable or mobile-originating connections as suitable cases for resumable uploads. This is a publishing workflow, not a way to store a file on your VPS.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems
