Transfer your video files to the VPS over SSH with scp, SFTP, or rsync; create an ordered FFmpeg concat list there; then send the feed to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. This guide covers the self-managed workflow, checks that prevent common upload and playback problems, and an optional cloud alternative.
Before you start
- A VPS account with SSH access, enough disk space for the videos, suitable CPU capacity for any encoding, and reliable outbound bandwidth.
- Video files you have the rights to stream, plus a local computer with an SSH transfer client.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS.
- YouTube Live access. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
The exact SSH username, hostname, port, and destination path depend on your VPS provider. Use the values in your provider’s server configuration rather than assuming the examples below match your account.
Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select an encoder stream and copy its server URL and stream key.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than copying an example URL from elsewhere.
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends encrypted RTMPS ingestion and documents supported video and audio formats. Check the current page when configuring an encoder, because platform settings can change.
Create a destination directory on the VPS
Connect to the VPS over SSH, then create a directory for the media. This example uses /srv/stream/videos; choose a path your account can write to and that has enough free space.

ssh user@host
sudo mkdir -p /srv/stream/videos
sudo chown "$USER":"$USER" /srv/stream/videos
Replace user@host with the SSH account and hostname supplied by your VPS provider. If you do not have permission to use sudo, create a directory under your home directory instead and use that path in the later commands.
Transfer the video files
One-time copy with scp
From your local computer, run:
scp -r ./videos user@host:/srv/stream/videos/
This copies the local videos directory and its contents to the remote path. OpenSSH’s scp transfers over SSH; current OpenSSH documentation says it uses SFTP by default. See the OpenSSH scp manual. Confirm the server’s identity when prompted, and use key-based SSH authentication where available.
Repeat transfers with rsync
For a media folder you update over time, rsync can avoid retransmitting unchanged file data:
rsync -av --progress ./videos/ user@host:/srv/stream/videos/
The trailing slash on ./videos/ means to transfer the directory’s contents into the remote destination. The command uses SSH as its remote shell by default. Review the rsync manual for options and behavior relevant to your setup.

Use a graphical SFTP client
If you prefer a file browser, connect with an SFTP client using the same SSH host, port, username, and authentication method as your terminal session. Upload the files into the chosen media directory. SFTP runs over encrypted SSH; see the OpenSSH sftp manual.
Check the transferred files
Before streaming, compare the local and remote file counts and total sizes, then inspect or play at least one file on the VPS. For important media, generate a checksum for each file locally and remotely and compare the results. These are practical verification steps: transfer tools move files, but a successful command alone does not confirm that every file is complete and playable.
Also check that the VPS has enough free storage for the whole playlist and any additional files you intend to keep. A VPS provider’s storage and bandwidth limits depend on its specific plan; check its current specifications rather than assuming all VPS plans are alike.
Build an ordered FFmpeg playlist
Create playlist.txt in the media directory. Put one filename per line, in the order you want the clips to play:

cd /srv/stream/videos
cat > playlist.txt <<'EOF'
file 'clip01.mp4'
file 'clip02.mp4'
file 'clip03.mp4'
EOF
Use filenames that actually exist in the directory. Keeping the playlist beside the clips and using simple relative filenames works with FFmpeg’s safe-path setting in the command below. The concat demuxer reads the listed files sequentially; FFmpeg documents its syntax and requirements in the concat demuxer documentation.
For clean transitions, the input files should have matching stream layouts and compatible codecs and time bases. Files with different parameters, inaccurate duration information, or truncated endings can cause gaps, artifacts, or concat errors. If the files are not compatible, re-encode them into a consistent format before relying on stream-copy.
Send the playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg
For compatible inputs, this is an illustrative re-encoding command. Replace the quoted RTMPS destination with the exact server URL and stream key from Live Control Room:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i /srv/stream/videos/playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
The settings are a starting example, not universal values: the appropriate bitrate and keyframe interval depend on resolution, frame rate, source material, and YouTube’s current ingest guidance. In particular, -g 60 means a 60-frame GOP, not an invariant two-second interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; set the GOP to match your actual frame rate and that interval. YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and CBR, and advises testing and monitoring the real feed. Check its encoder settings page for current recommendations.

If the clips are already compatible and concat-compatible, stream-copy with -c copy can reduce CPU use, but only use it after checking the actual codecs and stream parameters. It does not make incompatible clips compatible, and you may need a different output setup if the combined streams do not fit YouTube’s requirements.
Preview the feed and monitor the VPS
- Start FFmpeg and look for connection or encoding errors in its output.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and review stream health before starting the public broadcast.
- Monitor audio and video continuity, the FFmpeg process, CPU and memory use, disk space, and network throughput on the VPS.
- Test the complete playlist and connection ahead of the time you plan to go live. YouTube advises allowing upload capacity with 20% headroom and testing in advance; see its encoder guidance.
The feed depends on the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity and reliability. A successful initial connection does not prove the server can maintain the bitrate for the full stream.

SSH or file transfer fails
- Connection refused or timeout: confirm the hostname, SSH port, firewall rules, and that the VPS is running.
- Permission denied: check the username and SSH key, then confirm the destination directory is writable by that account.
- Files appear in the wrong place: check the destination path and whether you included a trailing slash on the local directory in
rsync. - Transfer stops or files are incomplete: rerun
rsyncto synchronize again, then compare file sizes or checksums before streaming.
FFmpeg cannot read the concat list or clips
- List or file not found: confirm the absolute path passed to
-i, the list’s location, spelling, capitalization, and that the VPS account can read the files. - Unsafe path error: keep the list beside the clips and use simple relative filenames with
-safe 1, or consult FFmpeg’s concat documentation before changing safe-path behavior. - Concat errors, glitches, or gaps: check for mismatched streams, codec parameters, time bases, inaccurate durations, and truncated files. Re-encode inputs to consistent parameters if needed.
- High CPU use: re-encoding consumes VPS compute. If the inputs are already compatible, evaluate stream-copy; otherwise use a VPS with adequate CPU for the chosen encode settings.
YouTube does not receive a healthy feed
- Authentication or connection failure: copy the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, check for accidental spaces, and keep the key private.
- Preview does not appear: confirm FFmpeg is still running, that the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint, and that the output URL is RTMPS as provided by YouTube.
- Buffering or dropped frames: check sustained VPS outbound bandwidth and leave the recommended headroom; reduce the output bitrate if appropriate or use a VPS with more capacity.
- Live access unavailable: check channel verification, any live-streaming restrictions, and whether first-time activation is still pending.
Rights and YouTube policy checks
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to use. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance asks creators to ensure their audio and video rights and comply with Community Guidelines; the application of copyright rules depends on the content and jurisdiction. A file playing correctly through FFmpeg does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it.
For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist alongside your own rights review.

Costs and trade-offs of a self-managed VPS
A VPS workflow gives you control over storage, file order, and FFmpeg settings, but you are responsible for the server bill, media storage, sustained outbound bandwidth, process monitoring, and recovery after failures. Re-encoding also uses server CPU; stream-copy can lower that load only when the source streams are compatible. Providers set their own storage, bandwidth, and compute limits, so compare current plan specifications for your intended stream rather than relying on a generic VPS estimate.
